This brew was served on tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company taproom in Warren, Michigan. It arrived in a generic tulip glass, glowing a golden honey coloring. It held a half finger tall head of eggshell colored bubbles, showing okay retention. Tiny spots of lacing were left about the glass. Haze was chill but lingering, while no sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared to be minimal. The aroma gave sharp Belgian yeast, lemon rind, black pepper, soft wheatiness, toasted sesame seeds, pale malts, coriander, allspice, vanilla wafer cookies, biting medicinals, and baking soda. With warmth came fusel booziness, light bubblegum sweetness, and dried apricot fruitiness. Our first impression was that there was a nice blend of Belgian spice, citrus, and wheat to make for a highly flavorful and heavy beer. As we sipped, the taste opened up with lemon rind bite, citric and sweet nectary hops, muddy wheat, coriander, raw honey, Belgian yeast, chalky Belgian pales, orange flesh fruitiness, must, crisp pales, mineral, and salt. The middle came to a peak with white sugar sweetness, walnut, cheddar cheese mustiness, white cake batter, prairie grass, and flashes of red cherry and that dark fruit heaviness. The end came with sweet esters to blend, along with banana bread coolness, wheat and floury pales, soured lemon juiciness, plastics, fresh cream, sweet clover flower, floral hops, and clean booze without the burn. The aftertaste breathed of vinegar acidity, light grassy hops, sour citric orange pith, alcohol, white pepper, sweet florals, clove, banana esters, and dusty wheat. The body was medium to thick, and carbonation was medium to high. Each sip gave nice slurp and smack, with nice finishing pop. Cream and froth, on the other hand, were okay, but not big enough to help buffer the heavier feel and big flavoring. The mouth was left syrupy and sticky, with little dryness other than from the booze. The abv was appropriate, and the beer sipped nicely.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its excellent aroma. While it is quite heavy and fusel from the get go, the sweetness of the malts, and the depth of the spice, keeping it even and nicely balanced throughout. Actually with warmth it even became fruitier, further sweetening any residual bitterness. To compare, the flavoring was also quite nice, but we felt they overdid it a bit in regards to how “Belgian” it was, as we were expecting more of a dirty, unfiltered, American imperial Wit. Instead there were heavier syrups and sugars, and a unmistakably Belgian yeast. This is not to say it wasn’t good, but rather just took us for a bit of a surprise. Additionally, the lack of creaminess and foamy froth made things seem unfinished, as they would have helped soften the edges. Either way, this was a strong, tasty beer, and something you should definitely try if you are a fan of wheat.
