Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Imperial White Ale is a cloudy straw color, and has a zesty citrus nose and a medium sweet aroma. It is refreshingly crisp with a bit of a wheat flavor. With medium hop bitterness, this is a delightful brew for any season.

consumed on 6/29, while I was "on Hiatus." stopped by Blind Tiger while in NYC today. Served in a tulip.

a - brew poured a murky orange with minimal head.

s - really nice weiz smell of oranges and bananas and general wheat beer odors.

t - flavors match the nose, but much more intense than one would expect. really big orange peel and some banana. kind of boozy. very intense flavoring.

m - feel leaves a tingle. big beer for sure.

o - i normally look at a weiz as a refreshing summer drink, but this is a bit intense for the 90+ degree day. i'll have just one as i didn't love it as first. however, this grew on me as i sipped it (as most big beers do) and i'm kind of digging it much more, however...still rather boozy.

I had this on tap at Ashley's in Ann Arbor...Pours a nice honey gold with a huge white head, lots of retention and lacing on this bad boy...The aroma is a clove bomb with an underlying array or eucalyptus. Aloe lotion does't get me ready to drink something...The taste loses most of the clove and you're left with mostly the eucalyptus. I can't drink much of this. Not my thing but other non beer drinkers were big fans.

I'd pass if offered again.

Had a 12 ounce pour of this at the Amsterdam Ale House on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

I'm not the biggest fan of Weizenbock. The combination of a wheat beer and 9.5% alcohol doesn't work for me. Visually, it was a very light color with a lot of good carbonation. The aroma is very wheat-like and good. Mouthfeel was ok but the alcohol is a little heavy handed which would lower the drinkability for me.

Pours a cloudy, golden color. 1/6 inch head of white color. Poor retention and poor lacing. Smells of herbs, orange peel, yeast, sweet malt, and more citrus. Fits the style of a Weizenbock. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of coriander, orange peel, yeast, slight hop, and herbs. Overall, good body and aroma.

First had: on tap at Blind Tiger, NYC

Served in a tulip glass, a dull golden-orange color, opaque with haze, and a tiny ringlet of head that disappeared completely within seconds. Lots of soft fruit and clovey spice in the nose. Taste is sweet and laden with banana, perhaps more so than I've ever had in a beer, bready yeast, wheat, clove and pepper, light pear and apricot that are mostly eclipsed by the banana, mildly subtle citrus hops in the finish. Smooth and fairly chewy, body is heavier than medium, drinkable, but a bit too sweet for me. Good, but I doubt I could drink more than one of these.

This brew was served on tap at the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company taproom in Warren, Michigan. It arrived in a generic tulip glass, glowing a golden honey coloring. It held a half finger tall head of eggshell colored bubbles, showing okay retention. Tiny spots of lacing were left about the glass. Haze was chill but lingering, while no sediment was noted. Carbonation appeared to be minimal. The aroma gave sharp Belgian yeast, lemon rind, black pepper, soft wheatiness, toasted sesame seeds, pale malts, coriander, allspice, vanilla wafer cookies, biting medicinals, and baking soda. With warmth came fusel booziness, light bubblegum sweetness, and dried apricot fruitiness. Our first impression was that there was a nice blend of Belgian spice, citrus, and wheat to make for a highly flavorful and heavy beer. As we sipped, the taste opened up with lemon rind bite, citric and sweet nectary hops, muddy wheat, coriander, raw honey, Belgian yeast, chalky Belgian pales, orange flesh fruitiness, must, crisp pales, mineral, and salt. The middle came to a peak with white sugar sweetness, walnut, cheddar cheese mustiness, white cake batter, prairie grass, and flashes of red cherry and that dark fruit heaviness. The end came with sweet esters to blend, along with banana bread coolness, wheat and floury pales, soured lemon juiciness, plastics, fresh cream, sweet clover flower, floral hops, and clean booze without the burn. The aftertaste breathed of vinegar acidity, light grassy hops, sour citric orange pith, alcohol, white pepper, sweet florals, clove, banana esters, and dusty wheat. The body was medium to thick, and carbonation was medium to high. Each sip gave nice slurp and smack, with nice finishing pop. Cream and froth, on the other hand, were okay, but not big enough to help buffer the heavier feel and big flavoring. The mouth was left syrupy and sticky, with little dryness other than from the booze. The abv was appropriate, and the beer sipped nicely.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its excellent aroma. While it is quite heavy and fusel from the get go, the sweetness of the malts, and the depth of the spice, keeping it even and nicely balanced throughout. Actually with warmth it even became fruitier, further sweetening any residual bitterness. To compare, the flavoring was also quite nice, but we felt they overdid it a bit in regards to how “Belgian” it was, as we were expecting more of a dirty, unfiltered, American imperial Wit. Instead there were heavier syrups and sugars, and a unmistakably Belgian yeast. This is not to say it wasn’t good, but rather just took us for a bit of a surprise. Additionally, the lack of creaminess and foamy froth made things seem unfinished, as they would have helped soften the edges. Either way, this was a strong, tasty beer, and something you should definitely try if you are a fan of wheat.

Type: on tap 10 oz
Glass: snifter
From: kuhnhenn's
Price: $7

Appearance: yellowy orange. Almost opaque with a medium sized white head

Smell: a little fruity, wheat, yeast, hop balance

Taste: yeast takes a strong hold but quite complex. Wheat, fruits, hops

Mouthfeel: thicker but not a sipper. Creamy and slightly bitter aftertaste

Overall: another hit from kuhnhenn's. in my opinion they are too rare and a touch to expensive. But they do know how to make beer

On tap at the brewpub, on the way down to DLD. List said this was 8%, and described as a double witbier.

Pours a hazy orange, some amber highlights, very bright looking, medium sized white head forms, slowly falls to a thick ring around the glass, some lacing sticks, looks real nice.

Smell is neat, very spicy, some coriander, wheat, very yeasty, bubblegum, orange peel, peppery, lots of fruity character, alcohol comes through, a bit sugary, not bad.

Taste is similar, sweet up front, orange peel and candi sugar, wheat, light toast, coriander and pepper, bubblegum, very fruity, some apricot, alcohol, spicy in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Goes down pretty easy. A pretty good example of a big wit bier.

Bottle. Pours a hazed orange amber color with very minimal head. What head I can muster is a off white color. The aroma is sweet with hints of peach, apricot, and pear mixed with some spice notes like spearmint. Medium/light mouthfeel. The taste is way different than I thought it would be with an almost lemon like sourness/tartness. Almost like a lemon smarties. After the tartness subsides a subtle wheat like base pulls through. Some alcohol presence makes itself known as well. Lingering apricot flavor. Very different but very tasty.

Poured into unibroue snifter

Pours a light layer of white head. Color is a hazed golden orange.

Aroma: A lot of wheat, cloves, lemon zest, and spice. It has some bready malts and it shows it is a big beer for the style.

Taste: A massive amount of lemon zest, huge lemonade flavor. It also has some applesauce flavors with some peppercorn. I also get some wheat and clove. Bready malts. Very unique.

Mouthfeel: Think of biting into a lemon. Very citrusy. Medium bodied with a lower amount of carbonation. Ends citrusy, fairly clean.

Overall, a very interesting beer. It was actually pretty decent. It has some nice flavors, but lacked in the nose. I liked all the lemon flavors. Fairly drinkable as well.
