This is a Flanders Sour Brown Ale which has the characteristics of sherry with a sweet fruity aroma. It is dark reddish brown in color and is high in acidity, sweetness and sourness. This is a complex beer that should be imbibed with notice to it’s high alcohol content.

A- Pours a beautiful clear deep red with two fingers of creamy head which is surprising for the style. Head has good retention and leaves quite a bit of lacing.

S -- Huge cherry aroma, has a bit of a cherry candy character, but overall is pretty nice. Slightly tart, but no hints of oak.

T -- Mix of sweet and tart with massive cherry taste. The cherry component has elements of fresh tart cherries, cherry candy and only a slight medicinal aspect. Sweeter than I was expecting, though there is a nice tartness throughout, just not the dryness I prefer.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is slightly sticky but finishes a bit dry and bitter.

O - Knocking the sweetness down would elevate this for me, but still quite enjoyable.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip glass. 2017 edition, had 2/24/19.

Pours a ruddy amber, somewhat opaque, with a half inch foamy head and some light, foamy lacing. Aromas of cherries, malt, grapes, some brown sugar and vinegar, light plums, a little caramel. Smells lightly tart and sour, a little funk. The flavor is mostly the same, but the tart and sour aroma disappears in the taste. Cherries, malt, brown sugar, grapes, some caramel, light wine and plums. It’s a touch sweet, but manages to have a little bitterness underneath. Smooth, a good medium body, well carbonated.

This is okay, but both the aroma and flavor seem to fade as l worked through the bottle. Not as hefty as most for the style. The cherry juice works well. Worth a try at a high price point.

Often compared to flanders red ale, the oude bruin usually gets a bad wrap. In a world where we prize high acidity, the later pales in comparison. But its toasty, woodsy, earthy nuances are enough to have the style to stand up for itself. And that's what the brewers at Kuhnhenn have done. ...except for the cherry part.

Cherry Oud Bruit uses that cherry influence of flanders red ale to make those comparisons even more direct as its scent of the pitted berry-like fruit lead the way. A russet brown pour shows a hazy garnet glow and topped with a light creamy froth before the nose picks up on additional woodsy, winey, nutty, peppery and toasted scents. A toasty sweetness creeps onto the tongue with light toffee, cocoa, pecan, coffee and cola with its first and malty impressions.

As the ale encroaches on the middle palate, it loses its sweetness but the toasty remnants of malt remain. Toast, cocoa, coffee, peanut skins and a mossy tree bark character soon follow in anticipation of the cherries. Tangy, tart and nearly sour, the cherries fuse with the beer's natural acidity for a piquant character of sherry, balsamic and soy sauce for a sweet, sour and savory taste heading into the late palate.

Spicy in its bitterness, the medium bodied sour ale carries a lasting taste of cola and peanut brittle with a medium length winey aftertaste. Oddly compelling, the style pairs well with mussels and beef stew, but often leaves the palate unsatisfied. This example suffers the same fate. So bring on the food!

'15 vintage.

This one pours a dark murky reddish brown color, with a very small head, and no lacing.

This smells like overwhelming sweet and sour cherry juice- there's not much else here. I would've thought the cherry would fade, as it's a 2015 bottle, but it's so cherry forward. It's lightly sour, and the acidity rolls of the tongue nicely. There's cherry candy, and a bit of syrupy caramel as well.

This is thick and quite syrupy, with a lower level of carbonation. It's a slow sipper.

I definitely wish this was a little bit more balanced, but it's definitely a fun beer to drink anyway.

Pours a dark, swirly, nutty brown; absolutely no head at all.

Aroma is sweet and syrupy, featuring cherries, brown sugar, and a little earthy spice from the yeast. Some dark fruit.

Flavor is a very nice, smooth blend of mildly sour brown ale and sweet cherries. Not a ton of sourness, but it's there, with a nice vinegar-like finish. Sweet cherries throughout, and a light, rustic funk.

Surprisingly thick and sticky mouthfeel; I'm attributing this to the sky-high ABV for the style.

An excellent, interesting brew, and one I'd gladly revisit.

2010 bottle, 12oz into a tulip appears chestnut brown with a thin khaki head thats quick to fade.

Aroma of chocolate covered cherry pits, earth, roast and alcohol. Caramel and vanilla. Vinegar and tang as it breathes.

Tastes tart yet strong with a chocolate covered cherry flavoring thats earthy and pitted. Mild vinegar, caramel and vanilla sweetness. Mild papery oxidation in the aftertaste.

Full body, light carb. The alcohol is well hidden but goes straight to your head. Much better than I anticipated.
