A - Mahogany, cloudy, cola like spritzy head has little retention and little lacing.

S/T - Honey sweetness all around. Some brown and burnt sugar, little spiciness.

M - Medium to full body, low carbonation. Finishes with residual sweetness left behind.

O - This is my first braggot and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Seems like its on par from descriptions of the style, just lacking a little in spice and hop content (maybe?). Worth a try, I may get another at some point, but not really worth the price of admission in my book.

I had to sacrifice the last ounce or so in order to preserve the loveliness of this beer's complexion; real honey is rarely perfectly clear and transparent but Kuhnhenn Nine Braggot - thanks to my selfless forfeiture - is both those things in addition to being a lustrous tawny-amber colour.

The aroma is a remarkably syrupy and sweet spotlight of all layers of honey flavour. This Braggot uses local Michigan Star Thistle honey which is noted as being slightly sharp and pungent, with distinct notes of anise, cinnamon, molasses and prune. I get hints of all of that as well as maple, nuttiness (possibly the malts) and spice (perhaps aided by the 9.2% alcohol).

What's in the glass is a blend of 2/3 honey and 1/3 malt but the tastes tips way in favor of the honey. Little graininess is noted. Instead, there are repeat notes of nectar, cinnamon, and dried fruits. All the sweetness is chased away in the finish by a zestful ginger-like spice and an aftertaste that has (very) minor elements of savoriness akin to wild mushrooms.

The lack of carbonation may seem odd for what is technically considered an ale, but trust me, it's preferable. There's enough bubbles to lift up what would otherwise be syrupy, but any more of them and this would taste too much like a ginger ale (it has the spice and, lords knows, the sweetness too). As for the alcohol, it is a factor but not too much of one.

The concept of 'terroir' - the reflection of climate, geography, and vintage in taste and character - is unanimously and often exclusively used in reference to wine, but in fact there may be no product truer of terroir than honey. And this Michigan braggot showcases the unique tastes and textures of where it's from as well as any Bordeaux or Barolo I've tried.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clearer than regular Nine. Not much of a head. No collar.

Smell - Bright honey. Apple. Some cherry. Smells like an ice wine.

Taste - Bright fruit. Apple. Again it's like an ice wine. Complex honey that comes off as an apple flavor. Booze.

Mouthfeel - Thinner, surprisingly. Low carbonation.

Overall - This is quite tasty. Really nice and complex.

12oz bottle from the most recent release (2011 I believe) into a 25cl Duvel tulip. Thanks to Chris and Tony for sharing this one as part of a Nine/Nine Braggot/Nine - Syrah Cask tasting.

A: Clear, flat chestnut body. Nice color, but nothing special.

S: Dirty mead. Some rotten fruit, musty earth, and sweet fermented honey. Unpleasant.

T: Better here, as the unpleasant beer elements are entirely subordinated to the sweet meed ones. Clean finish, surprisingly enough. Unbalanced but not at all bad.

M: Flat, slick, light-to-medium body. At least it's not too heavy.

O: Not a very enjoyable beverage, really. By far the least pleasant of the three, and no better than average for the style. Disappointing.

Cheers!

2011. Poured into a tulip.

Appearance. Dark murky reddish brown in color with a very viscous appearance. Pours with a finger of thin tiny-bubbled mocha head.

Smell. A combination of fresh strawberries and blueberries starts to meld with a buttery nuttiness. A little honey comes in at the very end.

Taste. Starts out fruity, but more like freshly made jam, thick and syrupy with a bit of yeasty spiciness. Some more sugary sweetness comes in and it thins out a bit as far as sweetness. A more pronounced, fresher, fruit returns and is joined by an ever so slight nutty undertone. The finish is very sweet, but not to a point where it lingers forever.

Mouthfeel. This is the key to this beer. It starts out very syrupy and viscous as noted in the taste. This then transitions to a more moderate body. Finally it ends up a bit prickly making the fruit seem very fresh and juicy.

This one was really set off by the mouthfeel for me. It really makes a lot of flavors, that would normally be annoying to me, very complex and tolerable. Cant say I've really had another beer like this. It straddles the line between quad and fruit lambic.

Thanks for the bottle, Steve.

Pours a murky amber color with minimal head. The aroma is intensely sweet to say the least. Just almost like pure sugar and caramel. Maybe some dark fruit to it. The flavor is, well, sugar, pure sugar. There is a bit of dark fruit, maybe some caramel and brown sugar. Just far too sweet. Almost no carbonation doesn't help.

Chilled bottle into a glass. From semibaked. Thanks!

A: Pours a clear amber with short-lived off-white head. Like the other Kuhnhenn bottles we opened that day, this is nearly still.

S: Pineapple, yeast, flowers (mead-like), caramel, and something herbal (ginger?). Interesting.

T: This is an odd flavor, for sure. Pineapple and muscat grape are noticeable; this reminds me of some meads. Caramel, rose petal, and something that reminds me of ginger again. As in the nose, this is interesting, but it's pretty disjointed.

M: Light-medium bodied, with low carb.

O: I didn't really know how to review this; I couldn't peg its style while I was drinking, and seeing that it's classified as a braggot doesn't help. Just arbitrarily ranking it against Belgian Strong Dark Ales. It was a pretty "ehhh" beer that didn't stack up to others on the table.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a brownish-orange color with a few white bubbles floating on top. The aroma is heavy on the honey with some caramel, toffee and brown sugar mixed in.

The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of honey and orange citrus notes, as well as some toffee and caramel. The beer is fairly dry for a braggot/mead and the alcohol is definitely noticeable.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
