Amber in color; unfiltered, so it is not crystal clear. Quite bitter with a balance of malty caramel-like sweetness. Aroma is of intense dry hopping; meaning- lots of hops were added late in the beer making process post boiling.

Dark copper body with thick, creamy off-white head.

Sweet and intensely hoppy nose. Piney notes dominate, very enticing.

Flavor is hop heaven. Tart, mouth-watering hoppiness is the first impression. A creamy malt backbone is certainly present, but never intrudes. Some sweetness also evident, but not cloying or overwhelming. IPA perfection.

Tart, crisp, moderately tooth-stripping mouthfeel.

Top marks for drinkability. I easily enjoyed 4 pints of this at the brewpub, (not driving), without ever tiring of the heavenly blend of malt and hops.

A well balanced masterpiece, much better than the last time I tried it. Very reminiscent of Masala Mama IPA. Outstanding!

Sampled from a 12 oz mug at the brewpub. Poured a very attractive somewhat deepish orange with a perfect white frothy head. Aroma is hoppy as can be - heavily piney, earthy hops with a very mild hint of sugar. Once past your lips, the hops just explode into your mouth. The flavor is absolutely fantastic. Somehow this brew is able to get the best out of multiple hops as it contrasts crisp citrus with piney, resinous, spicy earth. Some moderate bitterness is evident & enjoyable, but certainly overshadowed by the fantastic hop aroma and flavor that this ale must have picked up through heavy dry hopping. Coats the mouth beautifully & leaves you wanting more. Oh yeah, this is one helluva good IPA.

Had this beer on tap at the pub and had to bring a growler home. Their description of the beer was that they had finally tweaked their recipe to where they liked it so not 100% sure it's the same as others listed under here. Pours a burnt orange to copper color with an extremely thin layer of foam. Aroma is pure citrus, I get mainly sweet florida oranges as well as some red grapefruit. Taste follows with a large dose of citrus and just a hint of sugar maltiness in the back. Thinner medium body with a pleasing dry bitterness. Kuhnhenn nailed the citrus flavors and aromas with this one, I pretty much felt like I was eating a fresh orange at times, from the sweet pulpiness to the bitter rind. This beer is extremely drinakble and one of the best IPA's I have had.

On tap at Kuhnhenn on 4/25

Poured a clear rich amber color with 1/2 inch of foamy eggshell colored head, good retention and sticky spotty lacing. Smells of citrus, pine, and molasses, could smell it before the waitress even put it down on the table. Tastes of pine with a great caramel/molasses backbone with a sweet citrusy finish of grapefruit and lemon. Medium body with good carbonation, a big hoppy beer with lots of citrus flavors but a good balance. A little high in ABV to sensefully session, but I'd drink as my staple IPA if I had the chance.

From notes at brewery.

Wow this beer was great.

Very dark orange semi clear color. Off white head hangs around and so does the lacing.

Full bodied great semi sharp carbonation. Cirtus and grapefruit hoppyness in the smell and taste. Very robust in the taste.

This was our second round and my dad ordered: Double DRIPA while my gf ordered: the white devil. Both were better then the last round.

12 oz bottle. 2005 bottling. 5.8%abv. Now this is a suprise. I love most of Kuhnhenns very extreme beers, but this "simple" single IPA was really an excellent example of this style. The appearance is dead on. Bright glowing orange, with a billowy head of white foam that leaves some tiny, loose, lacing marks on my pint glass. The aromas are all fresh West Coast hops. Cascades, maybe some Centennials, and probably some other high alpha acid hops as well. Citrus fruits, pine, and a bit of background biscuit malt round out the aroma profile of this great smelling brew. The taste follows through with sticky "C" hop flavors, and other sticky, acidic, cone flavors that make me even wonder if there are some simcoes or amarillos in here. Interesting, I really don't know what's in the mix here. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well-rounded with an intense drinkability as well. What an excellent "ordinary" brew from this extraordinary brewery!

Nice amber color with fluffy white head. Beautiful hoppy aroma - crisp with pine notes. Tastes builds up on aroma - bitter, hoppy bite with malty background. Wonderful aftertaste - the tongue, awaken by hops, lightly tingles with no complaints.

In my amateur opinion, this beer is an excellent example of the American IPA style. I had a pint at the bar and thought that it's worth a growler (even with bigger beers available at near-by taps).

Had on-tap last night. It pours a deep translucent copper/amber. There is a tiny quarter inch head that hung around for about half the pint. Lacing was evident but not strong.

This beer has a very strong citrus hops aroma. The scent of this one really is part of the enjoyment, it just smells great. It seems to give you a representation of the quality and freshness.

As far as flavor goes hops is the word. Much like the scent the flavor seems to be almost all citrus hops with a hint of maltiness. I don't find the bitterness to be overpowering at all, it somehow balances itself out. It really is delightful. It feels creamy in my mouth without being too heavy. It goes down mighty easily for its strength and it's hard not to take it down in a few healthy swigs.

Overall this is a very tasty and refreshing IPA, equally suited for a hot summer afternoon or a cold winter night. This is definitely another gem from Kuhnhenn's and I'm glad I tried it. They just keep putting out great stuff. I think this one is my current favorite, I could drink it all day and night.

Tasted on a piligrimage to the brewpub.
"Pint"glass poured with plenty of white fine head, on a base of orange- ish yellow. Maybe a little bit too carbonated. The aroma is quite "green" and has that "fresh" hop smell I adore. The taste is right on for the style, with just the right amount of bitterness to balance that residual sweetness undre the surface; that hop bitterness does sit there in your mouth for a good minute or two after a sip. The pine and citrus flavors/ aromas balance VERY nicely. Feels awfully nice in the mouth, and not too heavy for the style. This is really just a little too easy to drink.

On-tap at the brewery, this IPA pours a deep red amber with a frothy white head that leaves nice walls of lace. Very appetizing pint. Picture perfect.

The aroma is primarily of hops and pine with some nice orange and lemon to round out the nose and help to balance.

Pungent grassy hops, mouthwatering bitterness. Some earthy tones throughout with a nice sweet and toasty malt backbone. Well balanced and complex in flavor. The big resinous hops linger through the finish. Really great.

Medium bodied but manages to remain clean/refreshing on the palate with moderate carbonation. One of the best IPAs I've had in a while as far as quality and balance are concerned. Delivers in the hop department without being all about them. Well Done.

Label on bottle states American IPA. 6.3% abv. Deep copper color with smallish head and lightly carbonated. NW hops come through in nose with malt in support. Nice malt introduction, light on the tongue, middle is a heavy hop balanced with malt, then the long dry finish. This is a great beer !!

Sampled on draught @ Kuhnhenn Brewing Company in Warren, Michigan. Amber color. Fantastic hop aromatics, piney and resiny with ruby red grapefruit, along with the malt, which smells sugary and sweet, caramel and honey laden. Big, bodacious, sugary caramel and toffee malt coating with a truly enjoyable onslaught of hop flavors. More piney and sprucey flavors than anything else, like taking a bite out of a jungle in Honduras. A wonderful IPA. Oh If I lived by Kuhnhenn this would surely be my growler of choice.

Cloudy, ruby red body with a sparse and quickly dissipating layer of off white head. Aroma is very nice with piney, citrucy hops. Flavor is well balanced between the bitterness and sweetness, the hop flavor stands out more than just the bitterness. Mouthfeel is spot on. Very drinkable, very balanced.

Poured from a 12oz with a brewed on date of 4/4/05 best before 7/4/05, into a pint glass.

Bright copper with a small white head. Not much retention or lacing.

Smells mostly of fruity hops.

The taste is a nice balance of malt and hops. Malty upfront that fades into a dry lingering finish.

The medium mouthfeel adds to the drinkability.

On tap at Blind Tiger in NYC: pours hazy copper amber color with a small creamy tan head that faded fast (which I suspect was from a crappy pour), leaving very good spotty lacing.

Smells of big citrus hops up front, with orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, floral hops, sweet malt, caramel, a touch of piney hops and mild spices; a nice West Coast IPA nose that was sweet and fruity.

Tastes of big citrus hops, orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, floral hops, sweet malt, caramel, grains, herbs, piney hops/pine cone, coriander, faint brown sugar and mild spices like pepper; almost tastes like dry hops were added as this is potent, floral and full of citrus flavor. Very hop forward and tasty, hiding the ABV completely.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp and oily slick, with mild carbonation, a medium body and a nice bitter citrus finish. High drinkability, this flew down and was very tasty. A session IPA indeed which I recommend trying as it was quite enjoyable.

Hazy orange body with a nice creamy head. The head shows excellent retention. A fresh floral aroma, with a nice amount of fruity sweetness in there as well. On the tongue, there's a solid malt sweetness combined with a ton of hop flavor. Pine, tangerine, orange, and bitter grapefruit; it's all there. A decent amount of bitterness on the nice dry finish. Mouthfeel is very smooth with moderate levels of carbonation. Drinkability is very good. A very solid IPA.

Pours muddy gold in appearance. Thin film of carbonation remains creamy on top. Aroma is wonderful - full of piney and grapefruit smells. Sip reveals a very nice mouthfeel with an extremely bitter hops flavors. Very creamy in sipping a nice beer to drink. Not much grapefruit hops flavor to this one. One of the better standard offerings (non-fruit or specialty) by the Kuhnhenn Brothers.

Got this one from Bill at Brewing News, thank you sir!

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

Pours a clear rustic amber hue with a one finger toasted off-white head that dies down to a thin fluffy layer of bubbles. Good spotty lace on the sides of the glass. Smell is crisp with fresh cut grass, lemon, and Christmas tree. A light hop aroma followed by a touch of toasted almonds and brown sugar. A very enjoyable beer to sniff. Taste is pretty light up front with pine, caramel sugars, and orange zest. A solid grapefruit flavor throughout with a toffee linger. The balance with this IPA is nice, unexpected from Kuhnhenn to be honest. Very creamy body with a medium to full feel. Carbonation is light, but very fitting. I like this beer a lot, I'm guessing this is pretty fresh. I could see this beer losing its flavor rather quickly. Wish I could get more from these guys on a regular basis and they were cheaper, ha. Solid IPA overall though that is borderline session...heyoooo.

12 oz bottle for $1.99

A: Nice looking beer. About 1" head, cloudy reddish-orange body

S: Lots of pine and hops

T: Nice malt sweetness to balance the hops. Finishes with a grapefruit taste, slightly sour but in a good way

M: Typical body for an IPA, nothing special, nothing wrong with it

D: Fairly high. I would buy a sixer of this and put it back easy

A solid if unspectacular IPA. Very refreshing.

A- A clear, coppery beer with some streams of rising carbonation. The head is very creamy looking but a little on the thin side.

S- Some pine and caramel. Somewhat floral. A little "stinky," like a gym bag or something- but it is oddly not problem.

T- Very bitter, with strong flavors. A little earthy, but mostly piney and caramely.

M- Dry, crisp, and clean. A little creamy at the same time.

D- Very flavorful, I am impressed.

Thanks to Holly at Kuhnhenn's for hooking me up!

Finally, my first growler review. Also had a pint of this at the brew pub. Pours a clear, dark amber with a decent amount of head. The taste up front if very sweet, with a floral fruity hop kind of taste to it. Its very smooth and quite easy to drink. This was 6.5% alc according to the menu at the brew pub. So this is very sessionable. Mmm hoppy ipa burps. This is actually pretty darn good. Glad I picked this up in a growler. My first jug! Very tasty beer.

Served in the 12 oz. bottle into a sample glass. The color is a dark amber, with a foamy white head leaving excellent lacing. The smell is a strong hop, a very piney smell with just a bit of grapefruit. The taste is dominated by a pine hop, with a very noticable malt backing here. Mouthfeel is a bit undercarbonated. As for drinkability, I could drink a few of these.

My first Kuhnhenn bottle review, and it's a good one. A very unique IPA to say the least, with a very piney flavor to it, and also well-balanced. Quite good and it's one I'd have again.

A: The beer is hazy copper in color and poured with a quarter finger-high off white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a thin head covering the surface and lacing running down the sides of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of pine reins hops in the nose along with notes of grapefruit.
T: The taste has flavors of pine resin and grapefruit from the hops and hints of caramel from the underlying malts. It has a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very balanced and also quite flavorful.

Appearance: Pours a hazy copper color with a modest head that manages to leave some lace

Smell: Sweet caramel with aspirin bitterness

Taste: Opens with a caramel base that quickly moves in a bitter direction with a lot of aspirin like character; after the swallow, the malt recovers from the hop punch to deliver a fairly balanced finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with a prickly carbonation

Drinkability: While I prefer a more citrusy IPA, this is a nice example of a big malt and aspirin bitter style. ABV on this batch is 6.7% with a best by 5-16-08 date (so it may well be less hoppy than it was when fresher).

Kuhnhenn American IPA has crispy, golden complexion - it looks like there was a toaster involved at some point. This deeper tone, combined with the fact that it's unfiltered, means that clarity is tempered some. The small amount of head produces a tremendous amount of lacing.

The smell of citrus hits you before you can even say ‘hops' - this wouldn't be an "American" IPA were it otherwise. Dry-hopping ensured there's plenty of lemon, grapefruit and all the other usual suspects though a surprising amount of consideration was also given to the malts; there's an appreciable amount of toasted bread crusts and nuttiness on the nose too.

Indeed, the grain is also responsible for its share of the beer. The flavour features a pretty crispy, caramelly maltiness as well as hints of marzipan, graham crackers, and a dry, plain breadiness. The hops, however, regain the reins in the aftertaste with a mini explosion of earthy spice and a lasting lemony taste suited to a household cleaning product.

That soapy finish, pleasantly citric though it is, is not without considerable bitterness; IBUs aren't listed but you can bet they stack up proportionately to the 6.5% alcohol and generous malt bill. There's nothing out of balance here. This thing was engineered to be satisfying as well as satiating; more than one pint is possible but not mandatory to get a proper hop fix.

Kuhnhenn American IPA is a good example of a great style; like so many of this brewery's offerings it serves as a textbook sample of the genre. Like most other reviewers, I can't say anything extraordinary about it, but it's even more difficult to think of something negative. There's always new, exciting things to try at Kuhnhenn but this classic won't ever disappoint.

On-tap at Kuhnhenn Brewery in Warren, Michigan.
