Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 01-08-2003

Amber in color; unfiltered, so it is not crystal clear. Quite bitter with a balance of malty caramel-like sweetness. Aroma is of intense dry hopping; meaning- lots of hops were added late in the beer making process post boiling.

12oz bottle received as an extra from a very generous trader - thank you, TheBlackMallard! 6.7% ABV, best before 16th May 2008. Chilled and poured into my Urthel tulip.

A: Deep crimson (surprisingly dark for an IPA) with a dense beige head that recedes slowly leaving a lot of lace. Plenty of carbonation and this one looks very appealing

S: Sweet with a lot of caramel. Hops are present as pine with a hint of floral character. There's also some fruitiness - plums and figs. Good but a little sweeter than I like my IPAs

T: Dark caramel sweetness forms the backbone of this IPA with a hint of pine hops coming through almost as an afterthought. Not incredibly hoppy by any means, almost unbalanced. This one's full bodied and is mildly bitter on the finish with a fair bit of sweetness

M: Soft, full and smooth - great stuff but again, a little over the top for on the body

D: Good but I'm not the biggest fan of this interpretation of the style (950 characters)

A- Pours a sunset orange hue with a small, white head.

S- Very hoppy, some sweet fruits, similar to aldebaran with a bit more sweetness.

T- Strong malt up front, a bit of a strange, musky middle, followed by a quite bitter hoppiness.

M- Thick for an IPA with ample carbonation.

D- This is definitely an interesting IPA. While I can't see myself drinking more than one of these in a sitting I could definitely drink another one again. The lingering bitterness is pretty intense! (481 characters)

On tap at Kuhnhenn on 4/25

Poured a clear rich amber color with 1/2 inch of foamy eggshell colored head, good retention and sticky spotty lacing. Smells of citrus, pine, and molasses, could smell it before the waitress even put it down on the table. Tastes of pine with a great caramel/molasses backbone with a sweet citrusy finish of grapefruit and lemon. Medium body with good carbonation, a big hoppy beer with lots of citrus flavors but a good balance. A little high in ABV to sensefully session, but I'd drink as my staple IPA if I had the chance. (553 characters)

Bottle from Champane's IPA tasting. Best before date of 05-16-08

A - Slightly tan, not very thick head. Into a standard pint glass. Looks more like an amber, unless you hold it up to the light. Not bottle-conditioned. Lacing.

S - Floral hops, caramel/molasses/slight pine affects. Can smell it from a few feet away. Seriously a nice smelling brew.

T - Slight alcohol undertones, major malt backbone, but hops riding the entire wave. A well done example of the style. Nothing outrageous, but good. Alcohol comes through the more it warms. Somewhat tea-like.

M - Slightly thin, but syrupy, oily finish. Light carbonation.

D - The alcohol presence is about the only thing really deterring me from sessioning these 6 bottles.

Notes: I was mighty surprised to find this bottled up, and it still holds up pretty darn well. I normally enjoy this on-tap, and while that may be better, this bottle doesn't dissappoint. To trade, or not to trade... (945 characters)

A- A clear, coppery beer with some streams of rising carbonation. The head is very creamy looking but a little on the thin side.

S- Some pine and caramel. Somewhat floral. A little "stinky," like a gym bag or something- but it is oddly not problem.

T- Very bitter, with strong flavors. A little earthy, but mostly piney and caramely.

M- Dry, crisp, and clean. A little creamy at the same time.

D- Very flavorful, I am impressed.

Thanks to Holly at Kuhnhenn's for hooking me up! (482 characters)

Pours a cool red/orange color, with a surprisingly dark head. Very good head retention and lacing.

Smell reminds me of sweaty socks, very buttery with just a hint of hop fruitiness.

Taste is all grassy hops, with a good malt backing. Lots of dry bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is good, very smooth and super creamy.

Drinkability is good, a solid, well balanced beer.

P.S.
Thanks to david131 for sharing his growler! (466 characters)

On-tap at the brewery, this IPA pours a deep red amber with a frothy white head that leaves nice walls of lace. Very appetizing pint. Picture perfect.

The aroma is primarily of hops and pine with some nice orange and lemon to round out the nose and help to balance.

Pungent grassy hops, mouthwatering bitterness. Some earthy tones throughout with a nice sweet and toasty malt backbone. Well balanced and complex in flavor. The big resinous hops linger through the finish. Really great.

Medium bodied but manages to remain clean/refreshing on the palate with moderate carbonation. One of the best IPAs I've had in a while as far as quality and balance are concerned. Delivers in the hop department without being all about them. Well Done. (746 characters)

Dark copper body with thick, creamy off-white head.

Sweet and intensely hoppy nose. Piney notes dominate, very enticing.

Flavor is hop heaven. Tart, mouth-watering hoppiness is the first impression. A creamy malt backbone is certainly present, but never intrudes. Some sweetness also evident, but not cloying or overwhelming. IPA perfection.

Tart, crisp, moderately tooth-stripping mouthfeel.

Top marks for drinkability. I easily enjoyed 4 pints of this at the brewpub, (not driving), without ever tiring of the heavenly blend of malt and hops.

A well balanced masterpiece, much better than the last time I tried it. Very reminiscent of Masala Mama IPA. Outstanding! (682 characters)

6.5% ABV according to the menu. Pours out to a medium amber, hazy, with a small white head. Mild to moderate carbonation. Aroma of fresh, crisp green oily hops. Malts aren't prominent and it's not balanced, but I don't expect it to be for an IPA. Moderately strong floral bitterness with an odd chemical presence. Medium bodied. Odd off-taste that I can't quite place. A pretty generic stab at the style but falls short of the mark. (432 characters)

Kuhnhenn IPA
64 oz growler
Moderate pour in a goblet
Unknown brewing (recent?), enjoyed day after the growler pour, 04/07

Poured a clear amber with an average white somewhat lasting head with fair lacing.

Smelt of strong apricots (Simcoe hops here again?), with light citrus and grassy hops.

Taste was upfront strong bittersweet orange rinds and apricot followed by a strong bitter spruce hops bite, with light to moderate citrus and fruit sweetness and moderate yeastiness on an average length finish.

Palate was light to medium bodied, oily, softly carbonated and moderately astringent.

Overall, nicely balanced and shows good fruit, although it doesn't have as bitter an edge as most american IPAs, so it could disappoint some folks. (754 characters)

grabbed a couple growlers for superbowl sunday...one lager for my father in law to drink while he watched the game, and this one for me to be able to tolerate the game (not a big football fan). needless to say, it was quite tolerable after finishing this one.

pours a deep reddish amber with 1/2" of very fine white head. drops slowly and leaves tons of lace.

aroma is great. grapefruit and pine. nice bready malt. bit of alcohol.

taste is great. bready malt. orange and grapefruit. strong bitterness. alcohol. resiny hops.

mouthfeel is good. nice body and a good moderate carbonation level.

drinkability is good. after my first glass i was thinking that the bitterness was too high and out of balance, and that the malt was a little lower than it should be. after subsequent tasting, i didn't find the bitterness as out of balance, but that could just be my pallet getting used to the hops. (906 characters)

Had this beer on tap at the pub and had to bring a growler home. Their description of the beer was that they had finally tweaked their recipe to where they liked it so not 100% sure it's the same as others listed under here. Pours a burnt orange to copper color with an extremely thin layer of foam. Aroma is pure citrus, I get mainly sweet florida oranges as well as some red grapefruit. Taste follows with a large dose of citrus and just a hint of sugar maltiness in the back. Thinner medium body with a pleasing dry bitterness. Kuhnhenn nailed the citrus flavors and aromas with this one, I pretty much felt like I was eating a fresh orange at times, from the sweet pulpiness to the bitter rind. This beer is extremely drinakble and one of the best IPA's I have had. (769 characters)

Pours a creamy foamy off-white head. The body appears hazy and deep orange brown. Aroma is of earthy hops and a kiss of citrus. The earthy hop flavors is also present in the flavor, but the citric character is much more prominent. Still there is plenty of malt backbone to back it up and the beer is well-balanced for the style. Medium smooth body.

A nice a IPA from the Kuhnhenn Bros. I found the appearance a little sub-par as it appeared like apple cider. Apart from that I found this to be a well-crafted, well-balanced IPA. I particularly liked the balance between citric and earthy hops. (596 characters)

Nice amber color with fluffy white head. Beautiful hoppy aroma - crisp with pine notes. Tastes builds up on aroma - bitter, hoppy bite with malty background. Wonderful aftertaste - the tongue, awaken by hops, lightly tingles with no complaints.

In my amateur opinion, this beer is an excellent example of the American IPA style. I had a pint at the bar and thought that it's worth a growler (even with bigger beers available at near-by taps). (446 characters)

Had on-tap last night. It pours a deep translucent copper/amber. There is a tiny quarter inch head that hung around for about half the pint. Lacing was evident but not strong.

This beer has a very strong citrus hops aroma. The scent of this one really is part of the enjoyment, it just smells great. It seems to give you a representation of the quality and freshness.

As far as flavor goes hops is the word. Much like the scent the flavor seems to be almost all citrus hops with a hint of maltiness. I don't find the bitterness to be overpowering at all, it somehow balances itself out. It really is delightful. It feels creamy in my mouth without being too heavy. It goes down mighty easily for its strength and it's hard not to take it down in a few healthy swigs.

Overall this is a very tasty and refreshing IPA, equally suited for a hot summer afternoon or a cold winter night. This is definitely another gem from Kuhnhenn's and I'm glad I tried it. They just keep putting out great stuff. I think this one is my current favorite, I could drink it all day and night. (1,082 characters)

12 oz bottle for $1.99

A: Nice looking beer. About 1" head, cloudy reddish-orange body

S: Lots of pine and hops

T: Nice malt sweetness to balance the hops. Finishes with a grapefruit taste, slightly sour but in a good way

M: Typical body for an IPA, nothing special, nothing wrong with it

D: Fairly high. I would buy a sixer of this and put it back easy

A solid if unspectacular IPA. Very refreshing. (419 characters)

Sampled on draught @ Kuhnhenn Brewing Company in Warren, Michigan. Amber color. Fantastic hop aromatics, piney and resiny with ruby red grapefruit, along with the malt, which smells sugary and sweet, caramel and honey laden. Big, bodacious, sugary caramel and toffee malt coating with a truly enjoyable onslaught of hop flavors. More piney and sprucey flavors than anything else, like taking a bite out of a jungle in Honduras. A wonderful IPA. Oh If I lived by Kuhnhenn this would surely be my growler of choice. (513 characters)

Presentation: 12 oz bottle with a shipping scene on the label. Brewed on and best by date both clearly visible. Also has a description of the beer.

Appearance: Pours bright orange with a large white head. Slight haze. Nice lacing.

Smell: Almost completely hops - mainly piney aroma.

Taste: Taste is dominated by hops as well. Starts out with some fruity flavors, and then leads to a very bitter finish.

Overall impression: Not bad, but a little light on the malt. A bigger backbone would make this one more drinkable. (529 characters)

Appears an orange with a lush thick, soapy white head. Lots of streaky lacing.
Smell is of citrusy hops, which are standing out above anything else.
Taste is of bitter citrus hops with some malt trying to come through but failing.
Mouthfeel is creamy but bitter with a heavy need for a sugary malt balance. (309 characters)

Amber/caramel colour with a creamy, off-white head. Great retention and lacing. Pine resin hops and citrus peel aroma. Moderate bitterness that grows into the finish, along with orange flavour. Hop character is resiny with light citrus, balanced by a bit of malt sweetness. Dry due to high attenuation, round body with moderate carbonation. A tasty AIPA with juicy hoppiness. Another winner. (391 characters)

Probably my least favorite offerings by the brothers. While most of the Kuhnhenn beers lean toward the malty side of things (even when they are well-hopped there is always a malt backbone) this one is an exception, the hops totally obliterate all competition on the palate.

Served a bit too cold into a curvacious tall mug. Pours a bright gold, hazy with a thin head that had decent retention. Nose is very floral and piney, strong hop presence with a variety of different notes, this made more sense when I was told a few to several hop varieties are used for aroma and flavor. Taste has a lot of grapefruit going on and is quite bitter, not enough to make me pucker but enough that it really wasn't too enjoyable. Mouthfeel was about average, but drinkability suffered from the flavor imbalance.

Cloudy and copper with gold highlights and a thin creamy head that recedes to a very thin film of bubbles. Syrupy fruit smell with a hint of hop.

Syrupy and caramel sweetness with plumb and grape notes. Abrasive but not overly powerful resinous hops finish up and leave a bitter aftertaste. Starts out biased towards the sweet malts, and as it warms the bitter hops developed to overcome. Moderate body is a tad to slick for refreshing, but very nice nonetheless.

Not bad, but I won't go out of my way for it. (515 characters)

Whaddya know-- A beer by these people that doesnt stand out. Pour is avg amber murk ---vinegar smell-malty taste with the cloying mouthfeel. This one is nothing special but I could see the drinkability improving if you start out with these with either some BBQ or anything else spicy. (284 characters)

Many thanks to beernut7 for this one of many...bottled in April '05...not super fresh, but still well within its prime.
Pours a very attractive clear amber color w/ a full two fingers of white head...a decent amount remains on top and some decent lacing is left behind.
Nice aromas filled w/ juicy fruit hops and sweet malt...no alcohol detected and very inviting.
Taste is enjoyable...a fairly hefty dose of hops, definitely taking the front seat on this offering. I would prefer a bit more malt to balance out the hops...the aftertaste is quite bitter and lingers a bit.
Mouthfeel is average and the carbonation is nice...another good beer from KBC and one more I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on. I would enjoy a few of these if given the opportunity. (771 characters)
