From 11/18/13 notes. Pleasantly surprised to see this still on tap at Beer Authority in NYC, and even happier to see it was a 10 oz. pour. Served in wine glass stemware. 2012 vintage.

a - Pours a pitch black color with a half inch of dark tan head and light carbonation evident. A thick looking big stout, looks very nice.

s - Smells of sweet chocolate, roasted malts, sweet bourbon, toasted malts, burnt malts, molasses, oak, sugar, and light smoke. Also got some toffee as it warms up. Awesome nose, and the alcohol is well hidden.

t - Tastes of bourbon, sweet chocolate, oak, roasted malts, milk chocolate, fudge, vanilla, toasted malts, burnt malts, oak, molasses, sweet dark fruits, leather, coconut, and smoke. Taste is a little bit sweeter than the nose with more bourbon, very light alcohol, and more fudge. Awesome taste.

m - Thick, full bodied stout and low carbonation. Thick and chewy, with a motor oil-ish body. Alcohol is crazily well hidden. Awesome mouthfeel.

o - Overall I think the normal Solar Eclipse is a good stout but very strong and nothing mind blowing, but this version is fantastic. It someone tastes lower in ABV than the base beer; I couldn't believe this was 18% ABV. Tons of complexity and the bourbon is great in the taste and nose. Highly recommend, would love to get some bottles of this one.

The beer comes in a pitch black color with a slight bit of brown head.

The aroma has bittersweet chocolate, soy and umami, booze, dark fruit, and some booze. A deep woody character as well.

The flavor follows with a bit of chocolate in the front, and then carrying onto this strong woody bitterness. There's a sweet roasty malt that balances that slightly, but a very barrel forward and bitter beer (for the style).

The mouthfeel is heavy, but not very huge on the palate.

The ABV is actually well hidden despite the booze in there. A very well done beer.

big big BIG thanks to biernutz...one of the coolest trading partners i've ever dealt with. thanks for helping me tick this big time want. enjoyed from a gold kuhnhenn tulip.

a - brew poured a soft goopy black that settles into the glass black with a thin brown bubbly head that bubbled away quick leaving some oily patches on the surface and a ring around the glass.

s - i felt that i could smell the booziness fill the air when i poured the beer but upon closer inspection it is actually rather well integrated. big decadent chocolate soaked in bourbon with vanilla notes and some wood.

t - thick and rich. lush. booze soaked chocolate. decadent.

m - this is a FULL bodied beer. a bit fizzy. the booze is REALLY well integrated. feels like a 10% beer.

o - kuhnhenn, you've done it again! paint me impressed. it's like a more digestible portion and better tasting version of black tuesday.

355ml bottle poured into tulip 13/6/13 big cheers towards liamt07 for this little monster

A not quite black with a deep cola edge, I didn't expect much foam but it pumped out a dark short lived two finger foam that leaves no lace, a little color on the glass and some legs running down the side of the glass

S chocolate syrup and smokey bourbon, soy, teryaki beef jerky, booze but I'd never guess its a 18% monster, molasses, some dark fruit and chocolate covered covered raisins, faint licorice and a little more booze

T not as much soy, some faint char, booze is still there but all things considered I'd say its in check, a little more dark fruit and chocolate covered raisins, not a massive barrel presence but it works, sweet but well within my limits

M thick and syrupy with just enough carbonation to keep it from feeling still, I feel the booze in my chest more then my throat, chocolate syrup, faint smokey bourbon and wood lingers quite strong for quite some time

O quite drinkable for such a massive beer, rich, intense and a little intimidating, I only have a sip left in my glass at this point and its one of those brews that will just level you if given the chance, my glass is empty before the booze from the first sip hits my blood, watch out

I'd love to have a bunch of these to age but I'm stoked to get the chance to try it, most beers this big I don't love but this ones an exception. I could see this pairing well with an empty stomach first thing in the morning before important social events, go big or go home!!

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours viscous with a surprising khaki head. Leggy and sugary as I swirl it. Not quite inky.

Smell - Bourbon, lots of booze. Chocolate. Vanilla. Raisins. Big and caramely. Even fruity.

Taste - Big bourbon flavor. Very sharp alcohol. Raisins and caramel behind it. Chocolate in the back. Slightly bitter, possibly from the malts.

Mouthfeel - Well it's incredibly boozy. Medium low carbonation. Sipper.

Overall - Sluggish as hell, but I can't deny that it's tasty.

Bottled 12oz, in 2012, aged another half year, served in snifter at 50F. Drank with wife who loved it in celebration of Kentucky derby and birth of son. Her first BBA RIS.

Black with not a photon shooting through this beer with a thin brown bubbly head round the glass, moderate retention, lacy bubbly lacing. Moderate alcohol legs, no surprise at 18% etoh.

Aroma of toffee, caramel, molasses, with the bourbon notes ble dig well including vanilla, smoke, oak, and a nice tone of licorice. Taste includes the entirety of the nose starts sweet with nice complex malt body and sharp licorice and caramel notes with a strong smokey bourbon finish, bold but not overpowering.

Full body, low carbonation, strong warming mf, chewy.

Overall, loved it, thought this twas excellent for the style. I think I like bcbs a touch more, very similar beers minus the heavier caramel instead of choc and coffee in bcbs. Loved the licorice notes, maybe star anise? Would drink this anytime. Would not pay more than 15 bucks though.

Bottle (2012)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, Spartan213!

(Aged for 6+ months)

Black throughout. Thick and heavy in body. Very thin small ring of small brown bubbles surround the top of the glass. Leaves the glass nearly clean, but oily on the way down. Appropriate for an imperial stout brewed in 2009 and aged in barrels for multiple years.

Lots of cocoa in the aroma, along with lots of bourbon and barrel notes, and the most burnt/char character I've ever experienced in any beer, though this isn't at all smokey. Lots of caramels and toffees and assorted burnt sugars. Licorice. Very nice. Surprisingly, there really isn't a ton of booze or alcohol in the aroma.

The flavor is similar to the aroma. Lots of charred chocolate, toasty, browned pie crust, caramels and toffees, candy bar and nougat, lots of bourbon and barrel, just a hint of soy, licorice, and complementary warming booze. The flavor comes together incredibly nice, especially considering it's incredibly high ABV strength.

Nearly full in body with very low, coating, creamy, silky carbonation. Appropriate.

This 12 oz. bottle took me exactly 4 hours to finish. I enjoyed every minute.

Bottle shared by Jason. Served in a snifter.

A - Thin tan foam settles to nothing. Very dark brown body. Wasn't expecting much, and I got exactly that.

S - Jeebus, this is quite boozy! Soy, chocolate, dark roasted malts, vanilla, anise. Not a ton of distinct oak and bourbon character, just a reinforcement of the extant booze and charry notes in the base beer.

T - The taste is pretty similar with the aroma, albeit not quite as boozy. Again, soy, smoke, roasted malts, cocoa, light oak and bourbon. Like the American Imperial Stout it's extremely well-attenuated, with maybe a bit more dark fruit.

M - Viscous, chewy, full body, with a smooth texture, and lower carbonation. Finishes hot and boozy. Exactly what you'd expect from an 18% beer aged in a bourbon barrel.

D - A definite sipper, although it didn't drink a ton hotter than something like Road Rash. Either be ready to share this many ways, or don't plan on drinking anything afterward. This might be fantastic in a few months, but at this stage I liked the American Imperial Stout a little more.

Thanks to mrbubbler for sharing this one at GRG1313's tasting.

2012 vintage.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, and bourbon. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty but quite strong and boozy.

2012 vintage into Villeroy Snifter

Pours a glowing mocha head with visible carbonation from the bottom and a nice hiss when opened. Slightly surprised at the hiss at such a high abv for some reason.

S: Aroma of sweet raisins, caramel, mocha roasted malt, toffee and cocoa.

T: Sweet dark fruit with raisins toffee and caramel. Smokey and oakey along with some hints of soy sauce. Cocoa flavors are strong along with the burnt cotton candy and hints of vanilla oak. This is delicious stuff :) . Hidden booze that is extremely drinkable. Cocoa and vanilla beans merging with oak and licorice at the end drying it out. Definitely my preference to a syrupy thick mess of a RIS.

M: lighter in body than expected but better than a thicker variety to make it easier to go down

O: overall very happy to have tried this and look forward to this again one day further down the road. Hoping to one day make it to the brewery.

12oz. bottle poured into a snifter. 2012 vintage.

(A)- Pours near pitch black, but ends up being just a really dark burnt sienna color. Almost no froth, but some minimal tan bubbles; not surprising considering the massive ABV on this.

(S)- Big notes of cocoa and raisin. Equally big rich notes of vanilla and caramel barrel oak notes.

(T)- Again, like the smell, very big notes of raisin and a bourbon-like burnt caramel sweetness. Subtle vanilla and cocoa show up as it warms. Very nice barrel characteristics.

(M)- It has a mellow carbonation level, but it fits due to how huge this is. Despite its massive body, the 18%ABV is extremely well hidden and overall, quite a smooth beer.

(O)- It is just great how well Kuhnhenn can hide their massive ABV beers, and this one is no different. A quality BA stout that definitely surprises you with its immense richness, but restrained booziness and great balance that shows the barrel quite well. Not positive how well this would age, but its definitely worth trying this now if you have one.

Reviewing the Bourbon Barrel Solar Eclipse from Kuhnhenn Brewing Company out of Warren, Michigan.

Score: 85

December 2012 vintage bottle served in a Tyranena snifter and enjoyed on 01/25/13. Review is from iPhone notes.

Appearance: Tradional Russian imperial stout color with minimal head off the pour. Minimal lacing, below average retention. 3/5

Smell: A vanilla and booze bomb! Bourbon, brown sugar, oak, fudge and caramel too. Tiramisu? Has a dessert-like sweetness in the nose that reminds me of Scotty Karate. The nose is well integrated and bold. Very complex, but apparently sweet. 4/5

Taste: Chocolate, bourbon, light caramel and a LOT of perky spice. Was this aged in rye barrels? Plenty of booziness too, borderline fusel-esque at room temperature. Has a vanilla undertone, but where is the intense vanilla from the nose? Not as sweet as nose led on. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, no carbonation whatsoever. Boozy warmth and spiciness pair well. Very dry finish. 3.5/5

Overall: This beer is high in unashamedly high in ABV, but it is no World Wide Stout. Worthy of a tick, not worth seeking out. Kuhnhenn's American Imperial Stout was not barrel aged, but it was much better.

Cost: $8 for a 12 oz bottle.

huge thanks to buzze40 for this beer in a recent IP trade! Thanks Brian! Really looking forward to another BA Kuhnhenn beer that I havent tried before!

poured into a tulip glass.

reviewed from notes taken 1/21/13.

Appearance: pitch black boided beer with a thin medium brown cap resulting from a hard pour. The cap on the beer quickly drops down to a small ring.

Smell: Huge coconut notes just off the charts coconuts! Barrel notes are huge as well oak and bourbon. Chocolate and vanilla with hints of leather and dark fruits.

Taste: Deep whiskey/barrel notes of coconut, oak, tobacco, leather, and a light char. Fudgy bourbon, with a hint roasty and smokey notes. Finishes with a touch of vanilla sweetness and bittersweet milk chocolates. This is awesome!

Mouthfeel: full bodied beer with low carbonation. Its such a great sipper beer. So smooth! Really silky as well. And it has the perfect amount of bubbles in this beer. Almost perfection! You honestly would not think its 18% unless you looked at the label.

Overall: What a monster BA RIS made by Kuhnhenn! This is way better than Avery's Uncle Jacobs Stout. I am beyond impressed by this beer brewed by Kuhnhenn. You could honestly sip on this for a long time.

2012 Bottle poured in to tulip.

A - Black with one finger of medium brown head that reduced to a thin layer.

S - Massive sweet vanilla and bourbon aromas up front. Some oak and chocolate fudge aromas are also present. Huge overall barrel presence and an amazing overall nose.

T - The barrel really dominates, as the nose indicated. Big oak, bourbon and vanilla flavours with a warming alcohol presence that cuts through the sweetness. Some chocolate fudge and roast notes as well but they definitely take the back seat to the barrel notes. Considering the 18% ABV, this is fairly easy drinking.

M - Full bodies. Thick and chewy. Light carbonation.

T - Definitely boozy, Dark fruits such as raisin and prune shine through. Huge bourbon flavor. Vanilla,

M - Sticky, Very little carbonation.

Pours black with a dark brown head. Relatively thin head for a RIS, but thick for a bourbon aged stout.

The aroma is the typical welcoming bourbon Kuhnhenn uses, but with a substantial malt base. Rich and luxurious. Not sharp but smooth.

The taste is reminiscent of 4D, but more substantial due to additional malt. Alcohol is hidden but the heavy ABV catches up with you within no time at all. A mix of dark and roasted malt as well as a hint of coffee and vanilla balance the bourbon quite evenly. It's incredibly balanced for 18%.

The body is fairly full with medium carbonation. The finish is moderately dry.

Overall, this was beyond the balance I could have expected for this beer. The age did it wonders and I'm thrilled to have been able to pick up three of these.
