Another beer from Kuhnhenn's line-up of breakfast beers as part of their "Breakfast of Champions" St. Patrick's Day special. Served on tap at Kuhnhenn in a tulip. Pours the color of stained mahogany; nice hints of deep brown and red with partial clarity as light beams through it. Small, off-white head settles quick and leaves behind no lacing.
My nose is immediately met with cinnamon as I bring the glass to my face. And by cinnamon, I don't necessarily mean "Cinnamon Toast Crunch", I mean, just pure cinnamon. Lots of warm, cinnamon spice takes center stage and pretty much rules the day. There's a light, underlying sweetness that almost with a light apple and grape skin aroma. There's also a faint breadiness and light caramel tint from the malt, but make no mistake - cinnamon is the foreground here. The be-all, end-all. Slightly disappointed that it didn't smell more like the cereal itself, rather just regular cinnamon. Maybe I was just spoiled by their Lucky Charms Lager.
Cinnamon Toast Crunch Ale tastes pretty much like I would expect it to taste; very much clouded with cinnamon spice, wall to wall. Up front, it's like pure cinnamon. Don't get me wrong - it's not over-the-top spicy or hot like pure cinnamon spice, but the flavor is all cinnamon, all day. Finally, about halfway through, some of the cinnamon subsides to allow a few of the other flavors to pop through. Mostly malty flavors with a very light apple skin sweetness, too.
The bready and light caramel flavors of the malt almost with the cinnamon and light apple almost give off an "apple pie crust" kind of flavor. By the end of this one, I felt like I was eating a pot of cinnamon potpourri. The heavy cinnamon was a little wearing on the palate. Medium mouth feel, a bit wet and slick on the palate with medium carbonation.
Not a bad beer at all, but like I said - a little exhaustive with the cinnamon by the finish, almost like a mouthful of cinnamon spice potpourri or a big helping of cinnamon red-hots. It tasted okay, but I was a little upset that it didn't taste more like the actual cereal, rather just pure cinnamon spice.
