I made my second visit to Kuhnhenn's last weekend. It's an average sized place. There are tables around a U-shaped bar that serves as the centerpiece. Brewing equipment is visible. I counted 30 taps of which 20 were flowing with beer. I got a couple flights which consisted of 5 beers in each flight. I sampled IPA's, stouts, Belgian styles, etc. The selection of beers is fantastic. All were good.

I got there at about 11:30am EDT, so it was not crowded and there were three servers. People did flow in during my time there which is a testament to the beer, since the food menu is very limited. My date and I each had a hot pretzel which held me over until lunch. Other menus items included eight inch pizzas, crackers, cheese, and cured meats.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The quality of the beer was fantastic. The selection was great. The food was lacking (quantity of selection), and it was all reasonably priced. I got a couple bottles to go. To go beer is high priced due to limited quantity.

Great spot, always going to have some great stuff on. Even if Kuhnhenn's most popular brews aren't available, others are generally great as well. Service can be a bit spotty on festival or release days, but that's to be expected. Bring your own food or buy from a food truck if they have one. I've had some great food truck fare to go with the great Kuhnhenn beers. A must-stop if you're in the area.

Kuhnhenn is a diamond in the rough of Warren, Mi. They do not serve much food, save for frozen pretzels but their beer selection is top notch. I am a big fan of the fluffier and all their blueberry beers and of course the high abv stuff. Just be careful, they are masters of hiding the alcohol from their beer and it can be dangerous.

Great looking place, bartender was helpful, fast and friendly. Love the beer here, no doubt. Only downside, no food (besides some popcorn, chips, cheese and sausage).

Flagship beers are all memorable and the seasonals/experimentals are just as good. These guys are hard to beat.

P.S. bring back the pumpkin sour you had at the detroit beer fest in 2013.

The other people there make this place cool. The beer is good, the beer selection is good. They have few food choices and don't always have a food truck around. The service is generally awful (moreso on the management side than the servers/bartenders). I would say that if this place didn't make a few great beers and meads they would have gone under several years ago. Their price points are also very high on some of their bottles.

First time at this brewery. Not bad setup, but hard to find since it's located in weird intersection. Beer selection slanted more towards IPA's and lighter beers, but looked to be about 20-25 beers on tap. Had the DRIPA and Porter, both good, liked the DRIPA better. If in the area worth stopping by. On 12/19 and 12/20/2014 is their Winter Solstice when they have their special beers available.

Not so good. Went in alone. Was ignored for nearly 5mins while groups of 2, 3 or more came and were seated ahead of me. Asked about what was available and was told to wait a minute while YUP! You guessed it, served more groups!

I may be only one person but my money is just as good as anyone else's. Just because you only get one person's money doesn't make it right to give groups good service while single people get service when convenient.

Will try them again one day. Will go in alone again and re-review.

Weird location but very close to my house = awesome. Great atmosphere inside, free popcorn, BYO food, friendly staff and great beer. Tented events here are awesome and fun with great music usually. Not a TON of parking but there are options down and across the street. Anyone in the area or just passing through needs to check it out.

Usually visit Kuhnhenn when I'm in metro Detroit.

A- Nice big U-shaped bar. Reasonable amount of high-top tables. Wood floors and brick walls. Warm and welcoming.

Q- Kuhnhenn's beers are a bit hit or miss to me, but when it's a hit, it's a grand slam. Creme Brulee stout, DRIPA, Braggot, 4th Dementia, Aldebaran, All Hallows Ale being a few of my favorites. They also have plenty of wines and meads for those who don't like beer.

S- They have table service here which is nice. When it gets really busy it can get hard to find a server but that can be accepted.

S- Always a variety of styles and ABVs to choose from. I've even been lucky enough to go in on Saturday afternoon in the summer and find BB4D on tap!

F- Kinda don't really know how to rate this one. They don't really do food apart from dried meats and cheeses but they are cool with people ordering delivery from local places or bringing stuff in. On special occasions they have some form of catering, and that has always been well done.

V- Reasonable, obviously the higher ABV and hopped stuff is more than sessionable things.

Come for the beer and great service.
Their motto is 'do your work here'. Offers free wifi.
Great craft beer selection with awesome variety, 16 on tap + wines + meads.
The Saison is one of the best I have had. The Loonie Kuhnie is their flagship beer and is a pale ale which is not too hoppy.
Awesome ambiance and smell of brewing upon entering door.
A must when visiting Detroit area for any beer enthusiast.
Food is snack food only. It's a brewery not a restaurant.

Have visited several times and finally putting in a review. Every time I have gone there is at least 2 awesome beers on tap. DRIPA is amazing, as well as KRE, 4D, etc. not really any food to speak of, popcorn, snack mix. Staff is hit or miss on service, generally not too bad if the bar isn't packed. Tough parking, and they never seem to have a good handle on what beers are available to go.

All that aside, it's a jewel in the rough, some world class beers albeit sometimes pricey, if your in Detroit, it's a must..

First visit I bought a growler of Simcoe Silly and it was great. Service was just so-so but the workers were aloof, uninterested and uninformed. Second visit... same thing but I liked the Simcoe Silly. Third visit I went with my partner who asked some questions about the beer and its availability in our area (we live 45 minutes away). The employees (three that we tried to talk to) were rude and really did not care about us as customers.

Too bad. I liked the beer. I hated the service. I really hated the snotty employees who really did not seem proud or care about their product. Won't be going back and I will let my friends know how we were treated. My partner was livid in his dislike of the Kuhnhenn Brewing Company employees. No pride in the product could lead to the demise of the place.

Stopped in here with the gf after a (relatively disappointing) trip to Dragonmead a few miles away.

First thoughts were that the place looks more like a brewery than a brewpub, not the most 'inviting' setup, probably due to lack of space. It was somewhat noisier than modt brewpubs as well (went on a weekday afternoon at about 40% capacity), but it wasn't an issue.

While they didn't currently have a few of the highly rated brews thay we were excited to try, the beer selection was pretty good. I can't recall the exact number but I believe it was in the 20s. I started with a quad (from bottle) and thought it was okay, not great. We then ordered a flight and it was a little expensive, but well worth it. There were a couple real duds in the sampler (I believe I had a witbier that was flavorless) but rest were all were above average to amazing (DRIPA and one of their eisbocks standing out more than anything, as well as my gf's imperial stout). I can see why this place is consistently rated in the top 5 for Michigan in terms of the beer quality.

Service was decent, possibly because we made it a point to sit right in front of the taps after a couple terrible experiences with service at other pubs. Friendly and inviting, as well.

They didn't have much food (no kitchen). IIRC popcorn, nuts, some frozen pizzas, and I think we ordered a cheese plate or something. They allow food to be brought in and have takeout menus for nearby restaurants.

In sum, this place doesn't have the greatest atmosphere, doesn't have a kitchen, and isn't in the best of locations...but they have some damned good beer. I am slightly disappointed with their practice of not bottling much of their beer, but I can respect it.

Great Atmosphere, service and people. Wish they served more than just chips and popcorn though...

There DRIPA was fantastic as well as the Penetration Porter. Was looking for something barrel aged, but those releases were all off the shelf by the time i go there.

Please expand!

I dropped by this brewery on my way back to Ontario after catching a Lions game in Detroit with my wife.

Read a few BA reviews first and it looked promising. It's location is terribly unassuming at a busy awkward intersection in Warren, though we had no trouble finding it.

It was mid afternoon on a Monday, but still had a few regulars drinking a couple beers. We sat at the large bar and both ordered flights. The house flight was $9 for 5 4 oz samples and the "pick your own" flight was $13. Pretty steep if you ask me considering that some of the beers I didn't really enjoy, such as the porter or heffenweizen.

No food to speak of, but they sell nuts and have free popcorn. People seem to bring in their own food.

Best beer I tried was their DRIPA, a very flavourful estery double IPA.

Overall, the ambiance of this place was lacking for an afternoon pint. It felt more like a beer hall than anything else, and is truly a working brewery. There were a set of TVs, but they weren't on. My only other complaint was that they didn't sell any of their beer in bottles, other than a big lager, though growlers are available. Worth checking out all the same, but doesn't really live up to the hype. May be a better night bar scene than for an afternoon place - also no patio, which was unfortunate as it was a great day.

This was stop #3 on a pub crawl for our group of four. We knew that there was not much for a food menu so our visit was mid-afternoon on a Thursday just to try the beers. We did buy some snacks and had some of the free popcorn to go along with the beers.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about this brewery. Drinkers of good beer make pilgrimages here for the experience, as we were no exception. The place was not busy because of our mid-afternoon timing of the visit, so we received great attention from a friendly server. We ordered a flight of 5 beer samplers (of the 19 that were available that day), and later ordered a pint of another beer that was recommended by our server. All were very tasty, but in all honesty, because this brewery and its beers tends to receive a lot of hype, I felt a little disappointed. Our group rated the beers from a B- to a B+ so overall a B grade, and that included a samplers of the renowned DRIPA and Creme Brulee Stout.

The visit here was a great experience, and I wish we could have spent more time to try some of their other beers, but we had a goal to visit two more places that day so we had to leave. I'll definitely go back when I'm in the area again.

So it's September 2013. A buddy of mine tried to get me in this place probably 10+ years ago. I'm a fool since it took me till 2011. So I messed up, this place is awesome! A good place to hang out drink beer and converse. I beleive they only have one tv so if your looking to watch "The Game" you may be disappointed. The beer is top notch! They always have something that sounds good, and is good. From my experience a bad day here you only have about 20 beers to choose from, a nice list of house made wines and braggots. The better days, fill the chalk board with about 30 brews. Service is usually really good, but this place can get busy at times and service may take a minute during sometimes.

Food is available, but I haven't tried. Except for some summer sausage and horseradish that blew my mind! I beleive you can bring in outside food, but I could be wrong.

Some of the brews can be a bit pricey, but usually worth it.

Atmosphere: nice and relaxed, but a bit cluttered with brewing supplies.

Quality: the big beers here are the best quality but i have had some fille that seem to be just filling the menu

Service: very mixed. sometimes i have had great service others the worst

Selection: good big board that changes with seasons. a beer for everyone.

Overall: Kuhnhenn's is a mixed bag. you don't know what to expect when you go there. the big beers are delicious but others are kinda weak. some stuff is a bit pricey though

*From my Yelp profile*

Well, it's about damn time I found myself down here.

I've been into craft beer for a bit over a year now, and have long thought of Kuhnhenn as the "king" of Michigan microbreweries (of course there's Bell's and Founders... but whatever). I finally went down this past evening and I'd go back and go back again.

When I first walked in, I asked if a group of people asked for a five-person reservation. I got a pretty snobby, "We don't accept reservations here." and I just sat down alone and waited. So far, so good! I was expecting some waitresses that hated their job!

Before long, the people I was meeting arrived, and we got some beer. I sat with my back to the windows so I could see the main bar area as well as all the TVs. The whole place is just covered in wood and lacquer... that's really all it is. It doesn't look bad, it just looks kind of ordinary. What doesn't look ordinary are the TVs... holy fucking screenburn! I think it's time to get some new TVs, Kuhnhenn brothers, what do you think?

Alright, alright... the beer. I wound up getting 2011 Vintage Fourth Dementia, Bourbon Barrel Fourth Dementia, TRIPA, Export Stout, and Raspberry Eisbock in a sampler for about $12.50. The 2011 Fourth Dementia and Raspberry Eisbock came with half pours, but that's what I expected. The quality of beer and the ABV made the $12.50 or so total price pretty reasonable. After the paddle, I tried a Conundrum... which reminded me of a watered down Export Stout -- a great session beer.

Lucky for me, Detroit BBQ Company was in Kuhnhenn offering up some BBQ. I got a pulled pork sandwich (which came with a side of spicy coleslaw) for $8, and I thought it was great. Even BEFORE drinking much of anything, I thought this was some of the best BBQ I had ever had... it didn't even need any BBQ sauce on it. The normal food that Kuhnhenn has is pizza, pretzels, crackers, and cheese... nothing too special. I just came on the right day.

My first impression from a random snobby waitress wasn't a great one, but my OWN waitress was knowledgeable about beer, patient, and attentive. It's stupid to give 4* to Kuhnhenn for this reason, but I am ... I give them a 4* rating simply because the prices are a BIT high (wah, wah, wah, I know), the parking area is relatively small, and the food they normally serve is originally frozen ... I think. I get it, they're a brewery, but I've been to plenty of breweries that have outstanding food. Dammit Kuhnhenn, get an executive chef in house!

In spite of those minor problems, I would love to go back. I want to go back. Can we go back?
