Enjoyed on tap at the wonderful Blind Pig Brewery in downtown Champaign, Illinois.
One and one-half fingers of off-white froth top a hazy honey-orange body with light creamy yellow-orange trim. Good retention and some lacing on the pint glass. The color is excellent. Nice, smoky aromas with bacon cooked in a pad of butter the dominant smell, with a bit of peach and lemon peel in the nose.
The taste is fruitier than I expected, yielding a good amount of honey, peach, and tangerine, with some lemon. The smoky, bacon flavor provides a nice finish, and the smoky taste works largely on the perimeter of Heller Bock. But it is very nice in how it allows the fruit and the caramel and biscuit malts freedom to operate. The balance in the flavors is quite good, and the mouthfeel is even better. The taste, finish, and surely the texture have a nice buttery quality. Smooth, creamy, and smoky make a terrific combination.
Bill the Master Brewer at Blind Pig has crafted a fine, nuanced, and rich blended style with Heller Bock. The smoke is held in check and balance while offering a fine complement to a fruity, well-malted Bock.
Well done, and certainly recommended.
