Tapped at the church-key brewery by brewmaster Dan. In a pint porter glass, this dark brew poured a dark chocolate opaque, ebony color that almost defies light through the glass. Holding the glass to a bright light reveals a hint of dark red mahogany as the light barely seeps through this thick looking brew. Low carbonation gave a medium toffee colored frothy cap that disipated halfway through the drink to a brown lace that clings to the glass.

Has a definate aroma of cocoa, with undertones of spices fruit and coffee. Starts crisp where some of the natural effervescence is imparted then builds to the strong cocoa-coffee, almost cola maltiness blended and balenced off well with just the proper hopping... then the finish is rather thin with the hopps coming in. A nice balanced porter...not sweet not dry ...just right with a chocolate accent...very pleasant to quaff on a cool night with some oysters or cold roast beef. The only fault I find is it is a bit too thin for my taste in a porter. and the ABV should be around 7%...then we would have something here!

One of the better local porters on tap in Canada but still a wee bit lacking.

UPDATE: Since I posted this review, I've had the opportunity to use this porter in some "sessions" at a regional pub that carries it on tap. It passes my test of repeatable drinkability and you never tire of the unique delicious falvor. This truely is a good local porter.

I can handle this. Some chocolate, bit of smoothness. Certainly not a Fuller London Porter, but worth having. Mixed reviews by mates, who thought chocolate was sweety rather than preferred bitter. Dessert beer and gimmicky? I think its worth trying Church Key experiments.

Bottle: Poured a pitch black porter with a timid head with almost no retention. Aroma is quite sweet with some notes of roasted malt. Taste is very representative of the name, i.e. tons of sweet chocolate with some roasted malts. Would make a great combo with some chocolate cake. Lack a bit of bitterness and body to make truly world class but still very much enjoyable.

Pours an almost opaque black body, with a fluffy brown head. Less than average retention. Aroma of sweet chocolates, coffee, roastedness. One of the more drinkable chocolate ales. Not too in your face, but a subtle chocolate flavour persists. A bit one dimensional, but goes well with a nice cheesecake.

This one is back, on tap at Volo.

Pours an opaque dark brown, almost black, no real light gets through, decently thick tan head forms, settles down to a ring, leaves some lacing on the glass. Smell is alright, a little messy, chocolate, some roast, toasty sweetness, iron, dark fruit, lightly ashy, a bit sour like chocolate milk. Taste is similar, heavy iron flavour, chocolate milk, light roast, dark fruit, a bit lactic, touch of astringency, not a whole lot going on. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. A little oily, lacto sourness doesn't really work with this one. Not bad though, I'd have it again although a pint was a bit of a chore.

Had this on tap at the Renaissance Cafe in Toronto.

It poured about as black as black can be, with very little head and no lacing. Not much smell to speak of. A hint of malt, but that's about it. And the mouthfeel was thinner than you would expect from a porter.

As for the taste, well... it was chocolate. Combined with a lot of bitterness from the hops, but not in a bad way. I liked this beer, but won't be running out to get another any time soon.

Another "looks are deceiving" entry from a Canadian micro in the American Porter catagory. Poured to a very rich almost 10W30 look with carmel like head and ample lacing. Everything else seemed lifeless. Way to guzzleable for a porter as the weakness of malt combination shows through. A very odd residue lingered in my glass (almost like flakes of chocolate). Rates as an "ok" in my books but just. More boldness in experimentation would go a long way.

Appearance: This one poured a deep, dark brown with faint red highlights. It was topped by a thin brown head that had fair retention.

Smell: Malty and chocolately with a bit of coffee-like roasted aroma. Hops were quite sharp smelling and didn't seem to blend well.

Taste: Starts with considerable malt, chocolate and roasted flavours. Bitterness is quite strong and is likely coming from a combination of hops and cocoa. The finish was dry and bitter, with the malts fading away rapidly.

Mouthfeel: This beer is surprisingly thin for a porter and for the amount of malt flavour in the first part of a sip. Carbonation is also on the high side and it has a grainy texture and a light astringency problem.

Drinkability: To me, this is the best product from this brewery, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find it. It could be an impressive beer with some work (fix the astringency and body problems, balance out the aroma or try other hop varieties for finishing).

This was a somewhat dissapointing porter that I sampled at this years Mondial in Montreal. This brew looked nice, as it was a dark black colour with a small tan head. The aroma consisted of subtle chocolate hints, burnt coffee, and plastic (!?). The taste was thin and lactic, with a chalky taste in there as well as a nasty metallic after taste. The mouthfeel was chalky and thin and the drinkability was just average. Not the worst, but definately not the best!

Very dark brown and, seemingly characteristic of Church-key beers I've had, pours a short head with zero retention and no lace. Pours up looking good enough, but gets one dimensional real quick.

Big chocolate and roasted malt nose, but with a powerful plastic-like undertone. Off-putting somehow.

Dry and chalky to drink. Lots of bitter chocolate flavour, roasted malts, but again, an underlying plastic quality to it. Thin and watery mouthfeel.

I've had a couple of chocolate based beers and this one just doesn't sing to me. Its character is too artificial.
