Pours a clear, deep mahogany with a 3-finger, milk chocolate head that falls to a cover leaving just a few spots of lace.
The smell is smoky, very much so.
The taste is also very smoky to start, smoky in the middle, ends smoky and has a smoky aftertaste. Along the way, there are slight notes of chocolate.
Mouthfeel is thin with just moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is good if smoked beers suit you as they do me. There's just a bit more than one thing going on here but not a lot more. Still, I like it.

Simple Malt Double Porter looks a little too light to have 'double' in its name; the sides of this coal black beer are aglow with chestnut highlights and transparency, though limited, does exist. The head is standard size (though does splatter the glass with a couple extra reams of lacing).

The aroma has an unmistakable 'whiskey'-like personality: smoke, dry wood and vegetal, lightly briny peat. The more typical porter-like qualities of chocolaty roasted malt and coffee are there too but take a backseat to the aforementioned. It's a really nice bouquet that demands to be nosed for some time.

The peaty, smoky, somewhat briny presence of whiskey is perfectly integrated into the dry, roasty characteristics of a traditional English-style porter. The balance couldn't be any better, though all flavours are really quite mild. This is not a big, overwhelming porter by any stretch of the imagination...

Indeed, 'Double Porter' is a little misleading of a name given the alcohol clocks in at a slightly stronger but still very reasonable 6.4%. Not to mention it lacks any burnt or particularly rich flavours and drinks with the easy sessionability of a standard stout or porter; a pint wouldn't be hard for me to finish.

Simple Malt Double Porter is where London meets Inverness. It is a perfect cold, wet, windy, grey weather beer that uses Islay as a spiritual guide to fill one's belly with delicious joy and transport the imagination to Scotland's rough, wind-swept and jagged shores. What a wonderful trip!

341ml bottle to porter glass. Make sure you're in good lighting to not mistake the color. Black at the top of the glass, but a dark rich amber towards the bottom of the glass. Nice looking. 2 fingers of light mocha head which dissipate moderately before even commencing to drink. Some lacing patches

N: WOW! So out of the ordinary I don't know how to describe it. Very nutty, a strong beef jerky, meaty, bacon smokiness is so dominant and inviting. An uncommon nose that makes you impatiently want to know what on earth it tastes like

T: Smoky and Nutty at first, which turns into a chocolatey roasted malt finish.

M: Not as full-bodied as a stout, but still nice and rich. low to low-medium carbonation makes this smooth and easy to taste

O: Really happy I picked this up. One of the better simple malt brews. Must warn all that this is smoky, delicious, but you need to like some smokiness or you may not be a fan...However, this might be a one time thing for me as an IPA guy

It pours from the bottle a rich amber tone. When it has all come together in the glass however, it turns into a deep cherry wood red. Its off-white head sits a finger high and is light on its feet, wasting no time moving to the sides of the glass and forming a ring. This falls on the lighter side of double porters when it comes to appearance.'

The nose is deliciously complex. At first impression I get heaps of sweet nuttiness, almost hazelnut in tone, reminding me of a classic English brown ale. Next comes a rich, meaty smokiness; burning wood and bacon to be more specific. This becomes the defining character of the nose as the beer warms. Squares of sweet dark chocolate lurk below, giving the nose a delightful sweet and salty combination. It could have a bit more umph but the complexities that come from the smoked malt make it great as it is.

Its sweet, nutty character comes in big and pastes itself along the back of the palate with a sticky and assertive dryness. The smoky deliciousness that's so prominent in the nose takes a back seat here, only revealing glimpses of itself as the nutty dryness plays out. Its chocolate character comes in an all encompassing whisper, giving the beer a sense of congruity.

The body is dry throughout with a touch of creaminess and average level of carbonation. It's a bit too filmy or thin for my liking.

Overall, a decent porter that has plenty of potential. If you want to make the "double" part of the label more fitting, fill out the body and ramp up the addition of the smoked malt. That aspect was so promising in the nose but didn't fill out in everything that followed.

341mL bottle from Broue Ha Ha in Gatineau. Picked up a few of the Simple Malt series to try.

Poured into a nonic glass. Dark chestnut brew, with some ruby highlights when held to the light. Good head of cream-coloured froth, which left some streaks of lace and a nice thick circling of lace.

Nose has some robust porter malt, caramel, and a pleasant smoky peat component.

A tasty porter to be sure, that has that nice smoked flavor coming in not too heavy-handedly, and with some caramel and nuttiness to maintain some balance. Lacks depth, however - not sure where the "double" in the double porter is coming from.

Overcarbonated, which really set the brew off a great deal. Thin bodied for a porter, but easy enough to sip once the carbonation had finally subsided.

Not a bad porter by any stretch, and the smoky, whisky aspect was well done, but needs a bit of work to become something I'd regularly seek out.
