Pours almost black with a finger of tan head with very little lacing.

Notes of smoked malt and boozy chocolate. Though the smoke and peat is not too assertive. The beer really opens up at the right temperature

Would go great with some bbq'd meat. Overall, one of the better beers I've had from Simple Malt.

It pours from the bottle a rich amber tone. When it has all come together in the glass however, it turns into a deep cherry wood red. Its off-white head sits a finger high and is light on its feet, wasting no time moving to the sides of the glass and forming a ring. This falls on the lighter side of double porters when it comes to appearance.'

The nose is deliciously complex. At first impression I get heaps of sweet nuttiness, almost hazelnut in tone, reminding me of a classic English brown ale. Next comes a rich, meaty smokiness; burning wood and bacon to be more specific. This becomes the defining character of the nose as the beer warms. Squares of sweet dark chocolate lurk below, giving the nose a delightful sweet and salty combination. It could have a bit more umph but the complexities that come from the smoked malt make it great as it is.

Its sweet, nutty character comes in big and pastes itself along the back of the palate with a sticky and assertive dryness. The smoky deliciousness that's so prominent in the nose takes a back seat here, only revealing glimpses of itself as the nutty dryness plays out. Its chocolate character comes in an all encompassing whisper, giving the beer a sense of congruity.

The body is dry throughout with a touch of creaminess and average level of carbonation. It's a bit too filmy or thin for my liking.

Overall, a decent porter that has plenty of potential. If you want to make the "double" part of the label more fitting, fill out the body and ramp up the addition of the smoked malt. That aspect was so promising in the nose but didn't fill out in everything that followed.

341mL bottle from Broue Ha Ha in Gatineau. Picked up a few of the Simple Malt series to try.

Poured into a nonic glass. Dark chestnut brew, with some ruby highlights when held to the light. Good head of cream-coloured froth, which left some streaks of lace and a nice thick circling of lace.

Nose has some robust porter malt, caramel, and a pleasant smoky peat component.

A tasty porter to be sure, that has that nice smoked flavor coming in not too heavy-handedly, and with some caramel and nuttiness to maintain some balance. Lacks depth, however - not sure where the "double" in the double porter is coming from.

Overcarbonated, which really set the brew off a great deal. Thin bodied for a porter, but easy enough to sip once the carbonation had finally subsided.

Not a bad porter by any stretch, and the smoky, whisky aspect was well done, but needs a bit of work to become something I'd regularly seek out.

Had this beer a couple years back, but thought I'd re-review. Original bottles came from Freud, but this one comes from Peluso in Montreal.

From a bottle into a snifter
IBU: 28

APPEARANCE: Pours dark, chestnut brown and yields a small, medium looking, tan head with decent retention. Head quickly fades to a faint wisp and ring. A clear sienna brown in the glass with no carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and ring remain but leave no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Dark malts, roasted notes, smoked malts and some leather notes. This is similar to their Fumee, but slightly more mild.

TASTE: Dark malts, caramel and smoked malts up front. A medium but lingering aftertaste of dark and smoked malt flavors, as well as some dark chocolaty bitterness. Good stuff, but not all that complex compared to some of their other brews.

PALATE: Medium body and slightly lower levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a touch mouth coating. Similar but slightly lighter than Fumee. Nice stuff.

OVERALL: Not nearly as good as I remember it, though that just might be because I've had the chance to try much more of their stuff, and now see how good these guys really are. A quality beer for sure, but this is very similar to their Fumee. Kind of like a Fumee Lite. Many of the same qualities are here, but the smoke is toned down slightly. An enjoyable beer, but given how excellent the rest of their stuff is, this one doesn't quite run in the same crowd.

Always happy to try a new beer from Quebec. Thank you, Jeffo!

Appearance. Pours dark brown with a little red and half a finger of off white head.

Smell. Roasty malts, chared ocean drifwood, dark unsweetened chocolate. Interesting for sure.

Taste. Smokey old wood, some roasty malts, slightly acidic.

Mouthfeel. Below medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall. Smokey porter here, but not sure if I'd call it a double. Nice beer in any case.

Somewhere between very dark brown and a light black with brownish hints. Small tan head that recedes quickly.

Smell contains chocolate, smoke, peat, tart cherry. Quite nice.

Smoke, chocolate, roasted malt in the taste. A bit of the cherry from the nose, but not as much as I was hoping for. Smoke is strong but not overpoweringly so.

Medium bodied, lighter than expected. Moderate carbonation.

Overall, pretty good. Enjoyed the bottle.

341mL bottle into a pint glass. No freshness date.

A - Pours a dark brown color showing red hues to the light, with a huge off-white dense head. Limited lacing on the glass.

S - Smoke is dominant, blended with some malt, caramel and dark fruits at the back.

T - The smoke is slightly overpowering to my taste. Some roasted malt notes appear as it warms up.

M - Over-carbonated, with a thinner body than expected, the mouthfeel is below the average. Alcohol is quite noticeable on the palate.

O - Announced as a robust porter, this beers doesn't share much of the characteristics of a porter. It certainly lacks a smoother mouthfeel. Besides, the smoky character is too dominant and hides all the malty notes which might be present. I'm rather disappointed by the beer from Brasseurs Illimités.

Brown pour, mild head that leaves sticky lace. Smells dry as hell and smokey too. Hard to find any of the roasted malt character I love.

Ashy, smokey, yeasty flavors dominate. Very dry. This beer exemplifies everything I dislike about porters and smoked beers. Let's see if the drain rejects it as strongly as my palate did...

A. Black with no light coming through. Some tan head and limited lacing.

S. It has a charcoal and smokey scent to it, very heavy. Nice. Almost in the same vein of a Schlenkerla.

T. It seems like it's trying to be like a Schlenkerla, but a bit too carbonated and bubbly and a bit too much malt and even chocolate to. Unfortunately it is lacking a kick to its flavor. It's tame almost like a soda.

M. Bubbly. Mildly refreshing.

O. I feel like this beer--while very good--just missed being a great brew. Just a bit to tame for something that wants to have an intense bacon feel to it.
