High Noon Rudolph's Red Nose Ale. Served in a pint glass.
Pours pretty flat minus a couple of bubbles that escalate to the surface. Honey amber in color with some pink-orange to the hue. A little hazy. Not much to look at.
Smells sweet and a little spicy with desserty pie fruits baking in the nose. A little pie cherry, peach, and apricot danish filling. Clover honey, bubble gum, clove, tutti frutti, and allspice.
Honey and sweet apricot upfront with secondary flavors of allspice, coriander, pie crust, spicy hops, and maraschino cherry juice. Just a hint of red raspberry. Actually dries as it warms, or maybe as you get used to it. Seems like I taste a combination of both barley and wheat malts. No toasty character, pretty doughy and bready in the malts. Very light cinnamon apple flavor is noted late. Surprisingly empty finish.
Not enough carbonation, at all. Big flaw. Body seems pretty big, in comparison. Feels like drinking the light syrup out of a fruit cup. Sub-par, to say the least.
Trying to figure out exactly what this is, and what they were going for. Not getting any Belgian yeast notes to call it a BPA. Very American, and with some hops to boot. Too many added fruits and spices to call it an amber ale. No defined fruits to call it a fruit beer, nor any defined spices to call it a spiced beer. And, at 5.5%, it's hard to call it a winter warmer. Whatever it is, it's not bad. Nothing I'd seek out, but I can't knock the sweet chewy pie crust notes. Subtle fruitiness doesn't offend, and it's short of cloying. Not ordering another one, but I'm happy with my selection.
