Shared a pitcher of this delicious stout at the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove recently. I've always loved this beer and this time around was no different...with the exception that I was able to put my finger firmly on the reason I like it so much:

It's a great example of what a "stout" ought to taste like; sets the standard as far as I'm concerned. Here's why...

It's sweet, but not too sweet. You can taste the chocolate they add but it doesn't make the overall taste become dessert-like such as with Young's Double Chocolate Stout. You can easily drink this beer by itself or with their food (or your's)

It's also got the dry, roasted bite that a stout should have but it's not so intense that it makes you cringe or want periodic sips of water. Very drinkable. Some might think of it more like a simple porter because of how drinkable it is, but the body is really what maintains the "stout" character: it is very, very smooth on tap (as well as out of McMenamins' 22oz'ers) with a nice creamy, medium body.

I can see how some may be bored with this beer because it's really not SUPER interesting or complex, but for the style that it claims to be it's great!

CONS: Unfortunatly, they usually don't serve it with much head at McMenamins even though they always serve it at the right temp (50-ish). Also, $4.75/pint feels a bit steep for a simple, local beer--where's the beer community love? (1,400 characters)

Available only (mainly?) through the McMenamins brewpubs in the Portland, Oregon area, Terminator Stout is full-bodied and delicious, smelling of rich chocolate malts, coffee, deep brown sugar, milk chocolate, and cocoa.

On the tongue there's an immediate explosion of chocolate malts--with their deeply-toasted, almost charcoal notes--and hints of ash and tobacco. These are balanced by a bevy of deep, dark sugars, bearing not-so-subtle hints of pure cocoa, vanilla, and caramelized brown sugars. Coffee and extra-rich caramels dance lightly in the background, accompanied by a pleasing nuttyness. Hops provide a minimal background fuzz. The aftertaste is dominated by coffee and chocolate malt. Mouthfeel is medium-light--far lighter than would be expected, given the force of the flavors--and carbonation is fairly light.

Overall, it's surprising how easily and smoothly this stout goes down, no doubt helped by the stout's excellent balance between bitter and sweet flavors. An excellent stout for all--look for it next time you're out west. (1,050 characters)

A: black in color, thin foamy non-typical head, some lacing. Body looks light...as far as stouts are concerned.

S: sweet grains, burnt coffee, and sweet sugar

T: coffee and sour-like grains. Toffee/malts and maybe some molasses in their as well.

M: more like a porter in character due to its lighter carbonated body and feel. Its a kick on the medium to heavy side. Lingering weak coffee in the finish.

D: have one or two and call it good for me, not a big fan. I like my stouts much heavier than this boy. (510 characters)

Terminator Stout: Roast coffee in the nose. Also sweetish and fruity. The flavor offers caramel, cocoa, brown sugar and some coffee, but not much. It finishes with a note of dark fudge and brown sugar. Moderate bitterness. Overall not that roasty for a stout, and rather rich and malty. It's nicely done and tasty, but perhaps not balanced enough to offer continued drinkability. (379 characters)

One finger of tan head with a dark brown body.
The smell is a strong roasted malt.
Taste is roasted malt and burnt coffee. A bit bold and one sided.
Fizzy texture but only moderate carbonation with medium body.
Overall it's nice, but bold flavor profile. (255 characters)

Had this when I was much younger... one of my first craft beers I ever had on tap... and it must have been at the Kennedy School where I had it. But this review is from their East Vancouver location...

- Nice dark, clear brown... black... huge light mocha head.. pillows and sticks around lightly.

- Sweet creamy grain, light sugars, cocoa... slight coffee and mocha... light bitterness... slight earthiness... grassy..

- Creamy sweet grain, dark chocolate bitterness which is very light.. slight oats, grains, bread... cream...

- Overall a medium bodied stout... slightly chalky, very mouth watering....

- One of the better craft stouts around. Back in the day this would have been 'the' best.. now is still holds up to the huge array of stouts around. I don't know if this is one of John Harris's brews.. but it seems like it. (833 characters)

First had: on tap at McMenamins Pub oak hills Beaverton Or

Poured as black dark beer with small tan head. Malts, coffee and cherry chocolate. Great smooth flavor with coffee and chocolate. . Heavy-medium mouthfeel.

best stout on tap in while. Very impressed. Not impressed with Oak Hills but the stout was the highlight of dinner. (333 characters)

A - I liked the appearance, it had a nice head on it, the color and consistancy was good.

S - smelled smooth, cleans, had a rich coffee like aroma to it.

T - The taste was very good, but it wasn't spectacularly stand out in terms of taste. It was almost like there was a finish that it was missing. So while very good, it didn't quite take that next step into the area of excellence.

M - It didn't have a particularly noticeable mouthfeel. It was't anything to really write a lot about.

D - Sometimes I notice that a stout like this is heavy to the point where the thought of drinking more than one is just terrible. This one isn't like that. So, it wins out there. (669 characters)
