Downtown Wine and Spirits is located in Davis Square, Somerville. Right on the main drag of Elm street, across the street from the infamous Redbones.
This is one deceptive looking liquor store. From the outside, and even when you first walk in, it has this small dive liquor store feel. Medium sized room, lots of cheap and dusty looking hard liquor and wine up front with the standard uninterested looking clerk behind the counter. The beer is located at the back, along a long aisle that stretches into the back corner.
So hows the selection? Lets just say, Beautiful!
The beer aisle along the back wall is filled from floor to ceiling with singles. The other side of the aisle has shelves packed with Belgians. Further down, and into the back alcove is a multitude of beer coolers packed with 6 packs and singles, and between that, even more shelves of singles. Craft, Belgians, Imports, Micros, macros, rare beers, I could go on and name things off, but really, just about everything imported or available in the state of Massachusetts is here. If a distributor in MA carries it, they probably have it. I actually saw beers here I havent seen since I was in Belgium and Holland.
Another thing is they carry a lot of glassware. Its intertwined with its associated beer, which is really a nice touch.
Overall Downtown Wine and Spirits is right up there in my top 3 liquor stores for selection in Boston. (Charles Street and Martys round out the others) Some dusty bottles leave some quality questions, but overall top notch. Well worth going out of your way for, and a must visit for travelers and locals alike.

My college roommate and I are both beer fans. Whenever she comes to visit, I bring her here. Fabulous selection, and usually reasonable prices (I got some Bourbon County stout for a dollar less than what she pays in Florida).
This last visit said roomie had been raving about a few beers she had recently tried, one of which being the Mikkeller Beer Geek Brunch Weasel. As we were walking down the aisle and she was talking about how wonderful it was, four bottles jumped out at us on the shelves. Her praises were not unfounded. :)
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they don't necessarily breathe down your neck, which I like. They have always made good recommendations, and though I don't shop there frequently, I am never disappointed.

Post EBF bottle shopping :)
Beer is in the back and they have a massive selection that seems to go on and on. Huge selection of Belgians, lots of imports and pretty much all the U.S. craft beer available to MA. Was greeted when i entered asking if i needed help with my selection. Very nice place, will certainly come back again.

Offering this feedback from recent visit during a Wednesday afternoon visit (2/2013). New management/owners? The beer shelves were being restocked , staff very put out looking but in their defense the aisles were full with recent deliveries that they were trying to stock and everyone looked overwhelmed . Check out service was uncertain of what to do and everything about the atmosphere seemed in flux.
Always found hard to find brands ( Belgian , Australia/NZ, UK, Germany) that many stores do not offer. Relatively decent pricing in the past,. Prices seemed high during recent visit and far fewer selections , again new management or cleaning out past prime stock? US craft brands well represented . One of the best selections in Boston/Cambridge Area. Hope whatever is going on gets resolved quickly.
