A - Pours a golden/amber color with about a finger's worth of frothy head. Decent lacing.

S - To be fair, my sense of smell is a bit off, probably starting to get sick... but there isn't much going on with the smell. Piney, faint citrus smell.

T - Very basic flavor. Tastes like an IPA, but possibly watered down? The bitter's there, but none of those other hop qualities I really enjoy are absent. Odd sour aftertaste. Kind of boring.

M - Mild carbonation with a dry, bitter finish.

O - I would not buy this beer again, a lackluster IPA, and certainly not worth what I paid for it. Unless you're on a new beer kick or something, it's not worth a pass.

This is my first review, although I use Beer advocate religiously. Most of the time reviews are pretty spot on with my palate, but every now and then a beer is so bad that additional input needs to be added.

... this is one of those beers.

I'd like to think that have a pretty sophisticated palate and I always give a beer 2 or 3 chances before making a final judgement. I have done that and my opinion has not changed from my first sip. This is awful, quite possibly the worst beer I have ever drank. I would rather drink a macro brew than this.

A: Consistent with the style, nice color, good carbonation. That's where the positive issues end.

S: Horrible, imagine a meth house with a hint of lime zest. For those of you that don't know many a meth house smells like cat urine. I have never done meth, but think I would rather do it than drink another of these.

T: Indescribable. HInt of citrus, no maltiness, no hops. Taste consistent with the smell.

M: Seems a little watered down, flat compared to the effervescence that appears during the original pour.

Overall: I don't think i need to add any more descriptors. It is just a bad beer. I have not tried any of Roscoes other offerings, but this is enough to make me weary of that. I am a very forgiving beer drinker, but I can't help but wonder who enjoys this beer.

poured from bottle into pint glass

A-Decent head leaving some lacing. very clear golden color with a small head and some bubble rising.

S-pretty weak. getting some slight malt and piney hop scent. hard to tell since its pretty weak.

T-Very malty up front finishing with a slight hoppy kick. Sort of a caramel malt throughout with the hops hitting in the middle and finish.

MF-very sticky. feeling pretty thick for the color of the beer. I have had IPAs this thick but they are usually much darker in color. Has a smooth, sticky feeling. Medium carbonation.

O-pretty good. Not to pricey. I wouldnt mind having this again. Wish I bought more than a single. I would definitely reccomend this to someone who wants a maltier IPA versus a hoppier one.

12 ounce twist-cap brown bottle purchased at Meijer in Ludington, MI ($8/6-pack). No bottling date could be located. Poured into a pint tumbler. The pour yields a finger of foamy head that slowly dissipates. Lacing clings to the glass the entire way down. There is a lot of carbonation visible. The brew is light amber in colour and appears to be filtered as it is completely translucent. Meh.

The aroma is initially hoppy and sweet giving off an orange-like scent. The malt then punches through with a syrupy sweetness. I have a feeling this is going to be on the easy-drinking side of the IPA fence, though the aroma is not a turn-off by any means.

The first sip confirms that this IPA is more in the English tradition of the style than it is a contemporary American interpretation. Pale malts set the pace for the flavour profile, and the balance leans in favour of malt for the duration of the experience. It's toasty and a bit biscuity up front. Some grapefruit bitterness slips into the middle of things, letting you know that this beer is adequately hopped, though the hops never overcome the malty base. Alcohol is noticed toward the end of the flavour profile, reducing the potential smoothness of this malty IPA. (It could also be noted that this beer tastes uncannily akin to a hoppier version of Roscoe's Amber Ale. Coincidence?)

Though medium bodied, this still remains one of the lightest examples of India pale ale that I've come across. The look may indicate that there is a lot of carbonation present, but the carbonation level is actually pretty moderate in the mouth. If only the 6.3% abv were a little better hidden, this could really be pretty easy drinking.

For those who are unaware, Roscoe's Hop House is a contract brewed brand name attempting to simultaneously appeal to both bargain beer drinking and craft beer drinking markets. As far as IPAs go, it is in the same price range as Sierra Nevada's Torpedo and Samuel Adams' Latitude 48. While it does bare some resemblance to Latitude 48, it is both inferior and less widely distributed than either of those beers, leaving me no good reason to every buy this again. Though it is not bad, Roscoe's House of Hop Original India Pale Ale seems to be the very definition of "average IPA".

The Two-Schlitz Scale: (reference my profile for an explanation)
I give a Schlitz for this IPA, though Schlitz is still the better bargain.

I had a sixer of this and liked it rather well. poured a nice golden tan with a small sticky head. Faint hop and pine aroma with a citrusy hop taste. Medium mouthfeel and nice bitter finish. I would buy this again no doubt about it. Not overpowered by alchohol and not watery.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A-pours a deep copper color with a 1-finger head, off-white in color. The beer's color brightens some when held to the light, which also reveals some carbonation. While not hazy or cloudy, it looks dense. All kinds of lacing.

S-Very malt heavy for an IPA, showing some sweetness and alcohol. Some citrus, orange to me, hops linger in the background.

T- Hop flavors of citrus and earthy pine mix with that strong maltiness. Not as sweet as the aromas indicate, not full on IPA either. Some spiciness.

M- pretty solid feel with some sizzle from the carbonation. The hop bitterness is a hit and run, letting the malts finish.

O- I wonder if this is really an IPA, but I seem to like it more what it rates from its reviews. I acknowledge its faults, but it wasn't bad.

A- Pours a clear-amber color with a decent white head that quickly goes away and leaves no lacing.

S- Mild citrus-pine hoppiness and malty sweetness. Reminds me more of a pale ale than an IPA.

T- Again is low on hoppiness, especially on bitterness. Isn't really a bad flavor, is definately watered down and not a typical IPA, the hop flavor itself though isn't very bad, just not bitter at all.

M- Thin body and high carbonation. Slightly sticky mouthfeel that leaves a decent flavor in the mouth.

O- Nothing special, and not good for an IPA. I will say that it is a step up from MBC but still a step down from what I expect of craft beer. As the 6-pack was $7 i guess its true that you get what you pay for.

By far the worst IPA I've had. Its a travesty to even label this an IPA. I fail to see how this garners an ipa tag, no hops, no welcome bitterness. Do not buy. Lagunitas, the Firestone offerings, SN torpedo etc is all vastly better. This offering makes Budweiser taste good

Pours clear and copper. Filtered beverage with a finger of nice white head that dissipated quickly. Lacing on the glass looks nice.

Stronger pine aroma than most IPAs.

The taste is a very bitter hops, malt and alcohol. The alcohol burns off leaving a weak malty flavor and a bitter, not so pleasant aftertaste. I prefer a bit more depth, and more balance to the higher alcohol.

The bitterness is not helped by the level of carbonation. Fewer volumes of CO2 could help the taste and mouth feel.

Overall an IPA that falls short for me.

The price point of the beer could suggest budget minded or entry level IPA. A first time IPA drinker may not return to the class after drinking this. A couple of tweaks that don’t drive cost (reduction of CO2 and malt to balance) could help this beverage immensely.
