Had on tap @ the brewery 11/18. Poured into a pint glass

Appearance: dark brown in color, 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: toasted malt and cocoa

Taste: toasted malt, cocoa, caramel, and biscuit

Mouthfeel: light bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet with slight bitterness

Overall: Sessionable dark lager that grew on me. Not overly complex, but something that goes well with a late season Pats game. I might pick this up again, or I may just try something else.

Colour is a nice dark amber, bordering on straight up brown. Smells of malts, roasted & kilned, but not caramelly at all...which is a plus for me (I hate crystal malt)

taste is more of the same....wonderful malt presence, not too heavy-bodied. Classic lager "clean" feel to it, it does remind me of drinking dunkles in munich over the summer. Carbonation is medium low, which felt authentic to me (if I can remember correctly from the summer)

oh yea, at the very end there's just a touch of a neutral hop bitterness on the palate....very pleasing. Overall a great beer for a cold winter evening

Sampled on-tap at the brewpub, 12-2004. 5.6% ABV, 24 IBU.

This lager poured a clear, very dark chestnut color with light brown foam that settled and clung to the glass. The smell was malty with some caramel and a hint of Munich malt. The taste was malty with a bit of Munich malt flavor and light hoppiness and with a bit of nice roasty malt flavor in the finish. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium body and good carbonation. The lager maltiness lingered on the tongue. This was a good, easy to drink dark lager.

This came directly from the tap to a tall shaker glass. It had an extreme brown color with a decent sized tan head that settled quickly back into the beer. The lace on the glass was surprisingly full for a lager style. The aroma demonstrated roasted malt. It really reminded me of a porter or scotch ale aroma. The taste had the same roasted malt flavor all through the profile. The hops don’t really show up. Very drinkable. Nice to see Aaron try a lager.

1/2 gallon growler
Dark brown in color with a foamy tan head. Smooth blend of roasted malt flavors, some chocolate underneath. Medium body, really stands out in contrast to a lighter lager.

A great representation of the style, as Dunkel is one of my favorites having this brew available locally... might delay my return trip to Muenchen.
I believe this would stand up well to BBQ and spicy foods.

Pours a very dark brown, hints of ruby at the edges, smallish white head that barely lasts, but laces very nice. Aroma is toasted malts, caramel, chocolate, and backed with a subtle hoppiness. Flavor follows, with the caramel and chocolate seemingly spread on a toasted malt base, then a fine and slight hoppiness finishes it all off. Medium body, overall an extremely drinkable and tasty lager.

Presentation: Hand bottled @ Watch City for BeerAdvocate.com

Appearance: A clear, rich dark brown with deep red hues. Pours a creamy and foamy off-white head that settles to a nice lace with stick.

Smell: Toasted grains, caramel and a background hop bouquet.

Taste: A smooth beer that creams up nicely on the palate. Body is medium, larger than your normal lager. First taste is a zesty-lemony hop flavour that stings then folds into a semi-astringent character. Malt flavours are not sweet, a touch of dextrin and range from smoked to faint roasted with toasted, grain, light caramel chocolate flavours in the background. Finish is slightly dry with a bitty mouthfeel.

Notes: I loved this lager. A nice change from all of the mundane lagers out there, and that it's a Dunkel ... even better.
