Appearance: 1/4 inch head, clear, golden-brown in color, moderate carbonation

Smell: vanilla, cinnamon, and toasted malt

Taste: vanilla, cinnamon, toasted malt, with a slight hop presence at the end

Mouthfeel: light bodied, medium carbonation, very sweet with ever so slight bitterness in the back

Drinkability: This is a decent beer that I could have maybe two of. I do like how the vanilla meshes with the pale malts. Not a favorite winter warmer, but not a bad beer either.

Growler obtained at the brewpub by a friend. Thanks Scott!

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a short-lived uneven tan skim over the cloudy reddish amber brew. A few bubbles rim the glass, and small areas of lacing linger now and again. Aroma is sweet and spicy, as expected for the style. Taste starts slightly sweet, goes tart in the middle, and the spices take over from there on out. Mouthfeel is soft over the tongue, and drinkability is alright. The tartness just seems wrong here, and turns me off.

Growler poured on 1/7, tasted on 1/7 and 1/8...
Beer pours a toffee color with a white, rocky head. Decent lacing throughout the entire beer. Nose is of definite spices - nutmeg and cinnamon are the most prominent. As another reviewer mentioned, very reminiscent of a pumpkin beer, or even Harpoon's Winter Warmer. Based on the nose, I expected the taste to be as powerful. Spices are muted in the taste, however it works for this particular beer, they aren't too much, but I may have liked to see just a touch more. For a winter ale, it was slightly lighter in body, but I liked it - a LOT. This is a decent session beer!

Seeing as how this isn't listed yet, I'm wondering if this beer is actually just a new version of the Frostbite Winter Ale. The beer menu stated it was a new recipe featuring a different spice content. So my guess is, this is in fact the Frostbite, just renamed due to an altered recipe. (I wasn't expecting to add it, so I didn't take down all the % details and such.)

Anyway.

It poured a dark brown huge, almost coca-cola colored body with the bartender pouring a very small head. What I could make out was an off-white touch though.

Nose was very spicey. Almost pumpkin ale esque. Lofs of cloves and a strong star anise scent.

Taste was along the same lines. A nice caramel, dark bread malt flavor, but dominated by this strong spice, nutmeg, cloves, anise, taste. It also had this watery, soapy, classic watch city water taste to it.

Overall it was a decent beer. A little too much spice for me without a bige enough body to hold up the back end. I should have had a second Hops Explossion. :-)
