Catherine II, the 18th century Empress of Russia, is said to have been the inspiration behind the creation of the Imperial Russian Stout, an intensely flavored, robust, dark ale with a noticeable alcohol presence.
Legend has it that Catherine also had a voracious sexual appetite; she was known to have many lovers, but the story about the stallion was probably a myth.
We infused our Imperial Russian Stout with cocoa nibs and fair trade coffee and then barrel aged it in 20 year Pappy van Winkle bourbon barrels to impart a smooth bourbon and wood flavor that makes this already complex beer just that much more interesting.

On tap at the new brewery. Pours pitch black without much head. Aroma if anise and chocolate, coconut, vanilla, bourbon. Flavor follows with sweet chocolate and anise, definitely some strong yet smooth bourbon influence. Smooth body, medium heavy, medium low carbonation. Really thought this was a solid brew.

Buffalo trace barrels. Strongly reminiscent of bourbon county. Not quite as sweet or thick. Fantastic brew and reason enough to visit the tasting room. Only negative is there are no bottles. Wish I could age this for a couple years

Black draft pour with tan head. Plum and fruit notes. Plum, oak, rum flavors. Medium mouthfeel, alcohol bite on tip of tongue, velvety feel. Overall, intensely good.
