Straight pour from a 750ml/25.4oz pry-off bottle to a pint jar; no bottling date, but this was released seven weeks ago to the day, if I’m not mistaken, and it’s been kept refrigerated. I had it on tap when it was a good deal fresher, so let’s so how it is now.

Appearance (4.0): Three and a half fingers of creamy, bone-white foam rise easily off of the pour, capping a bright, yellow-golden (not quite straw) body with TONS of little bubbles streaming to the surface all around. Somewhat above average retention for the style, dying down slower than average and leaving an arc and fat clumps of fine suds on the near side, along with a soft, sticky, sudsy collar at the surface on the far. Good looking for a witbier.

Smell (3.75): Classic witbier, showing light hay, crackery malt, and spice in the form of clove and white pepper evenly balanced, plus a bit of coriander. Clear blueberry notes no longer dominate but now mix in, between the spice and crackery malt.

Taste (4.0): Pretty much a straight-on iteration of the nose, but the tannic parts of the blueberry flavor are much more noticeable. Fresh and on tap, this was crazily, perfectly, naturally blueberry-flavored—not a hint of artificial flavoring whatsoever, just beautiful blueberry flavor that made you wonder how the beer wasn’t purple-colored. This beer is now more subdued in terms of sweetness, but the tannic character of the blueberry skins pushes forward and nestles comfortably in between dry, crackery/biscuity malt, dusty straw, a touch of honey, and a smattering of coriander, clove, and white pepper spice. It’s not so much a bombastic blueberry beer right now as it is a more complex witbier, which I dig.

Mouthfeel (4.25): Soft, fluffy carbonation coats all surfaces as soon as it arrives, playing counterpoint to a dry, lighter-than-medium body with a light prickle and gently tannic feel. In spit of the fruit addition it finishes somewhat (but not thoroughly) on the dry side. Very pleasant to drink—this would be a great one to pair summer pastas and seafood.

Overall (4.0): Glad I drank this when I did. The blueberry character has definitely shifted and dropped off a bit since it was fresh, but it’s moved forward gracefully, exposing the tannic undertones of the fruit addition and allowing them to mingle rather organically with the base beer. I’m glad they made this beer, and glad they’re doing it again. Now, if they would just shove this beer with some brett into a wine barrel . . .

On tap at the brewery. Pours a light purplish pink color with hardly any head. Aroma smells like a fruit sour beer, with a bit of blueberry and sour cherry. Flavor doesn’t follow the aroma. Taste is light witbier with a bit of fruit (though, not super blueberry flavor which is good since I’m not a huge blueberry fan). Mouthfeel is light, with adequate carbonation. Not bad at all.
