Most of my experience with Dunkellagers hasn't been brilliant, and I ordered this in a dark pub as the only handle I didn't know. Pleasant surprise ensued, beginning with a shooter as a taster, which didn't tell me much apart from the lovely color - the 2 oz. shooter glass enable me to see the burnished deep ruby and clarity of the hue.
Appearance: served in a standard pub pint, was indeed pretty to behold, nice inch of head, place too dark to really examine body.
Smell was clean, predominantly malty with trace of hops.
Taste delivered on smell - slightly sweet, with a slight hops offset, kind of a prune finish, but not at all like, say, a big imperial stout.
Mouthfeel was agreeably nice: light-medium carbonation, felt in my mouth like "I'll have another, please." Reasonably low ABV, probably around 18-20 carbs. Extremely drinkable.
A nice beer that, when encountered, I won't dodge..

A- medium to dark (root beer) brown. Nice tan head. Light to moderate dissipation with some lacing, but nothing noteworthy.
S- clean. Roasted coffee. Caramel and malt. Mineral quality (similar to an oyster stout).
T- burnt coffee, cocoa,
M- light body. Not too much carbonation. Bitter up front. Very crisp.
O- good. Would recommend and have again. A solid American version of a classic German style.

12 oz bottle into a goblet.
A: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is two fingers high and mocha in shade. Retention isn't fantastic, but the creamy texture leaves behind a nice ring of sheet lacing on the glass.
S: The nose is bringing a lot of chocolate, along with some roasted notes. As it warms up, it becomes more and more nuttier - perhaps even resembling hazelnut coffee at times. It's a simplistic aroma, but a perfectly reasonable one.
T: It starts with a nutty, chocolaty tone. The finish is *very* well attenuated - dry and mineral-esque, yet with a subtle fruitiness. Just like the nose indicated, this is about it as far as the flavor profile goes. Still, it's pleasant and sessionable.
M: Even for the style, it's insanely dry, to the point of evaporating off the tongue. It does this without relying on intense carbonation to get the job done. There's just enough lingering sweetness to keep this out of "pure chugger" territory - still, it's a very drinkable brew.
O: Not an amazing beer, but a good one to pair with food thanks to its easygoing nature. I'll probably return to this one again, just not on a frequent basis.
