A: Pours a very hazy medium golden honey in color with very light amounts of fine visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and moderate orange + amber highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall sudsy fizzy foamy beige head that reduces to a medium sized patch of extremely thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to heavy amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of tropical fruit/overripe pineapple and moderate to strong aromas of bourbon, vanilla, and oak.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of pale malts and tropical fruits/overripe pineapple stands out which contributes a light amount of sweetness. Strong flavors of bourbon, oak, and vanilla in the finish which contribute a moderate amount of sweetness and a moderate to strong amount of bourbon booziness which lingers.

M: Medium bodied with light amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Very enjoyable but definitely a slow sipper as this beer has some pretty intense flavors and aromas. Glad I finally grabbed one of these and tried it, worth the wait. Bourbon barrel aging definitely adds to the complexity of this brew. (1,206 characters)

An average beer. Not a lot of bourbon in the beer, but enjoyable none the less. The belgium yeast is a little overpowering, but a good change of pace. (152 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a Russian River “tion” glass. Per the label, bottled on 03/17/2015. Sipped on while listening to 9 Shocks Terror.

Appearance: Pours a dark golden brown with a thin wisp of a head. Hazy body with a dull glow. Not as vibrant and without the huge rocky head as some of the Belgians but this IS barrel aged and that explains a lot about the appearance in this beer.

Aroma: Essentially whiskey soaked pineapples. Like some kind of spiked fruit punch. There’s a fleshy tropical fruit sweetness up front being held up by nice malty caramel bourbon. The bourbon character is plenty noticeable without being just booze and still bringing in some toasted oak and coconut.

Taste: Sweet fruits, candi sugar, spicy phenols and a bubblegum sweet triple base down the middle that is quickly taken over taken by nutty oak, vanilla bean, caramel, and butterscotch. As it warms the base triple beings to peek out more, and peppery phenols begin to show along with some oxidized fruit (apricot, pineapple, and pear). Great blend/match between the base beer and barrel.

Mf: Gentle prickly carbonation with a dry finish. Very sweet and almost cloying with a medium/heavy feel. Despite it being a barrel aged triple it’s surprisingly smooth. #barreljuice

Overall: Tastes like Mother Earth took a solid triple base which they then let age gracefully in bourbon barrels. They could stick a trashy label on this and sell it as some kind of “pineapple infused whiskey” drink to 21 year olds. I was worried at first that the barrel would bury the triple but letting it warm up to room temp the base beer begins to shine more and more. White pepper, clove, oxidized fruit, and bubblegum held up by a buttery oak barrel. If I had to nitpick, I’d say just a bit more carb (to cut the sweetness) and a brighter barrel presence would elevate this beer to a whole other level. Is this what HOTD wishes they could carb? Never thought I would enjoy one of my favorite styles given the "bourbon barrel aged" treatment, but I was wrong. Mother Earth has done a good job of combining the best of a Belgian Tripel and the "bourbon barrel aged" process. Pours a hazy but bright orange color into my Chimay goblet. Head and lacing are minimal, but a nice color. Aroma is very good. Plenty of light fruit (apples and pears) and Belgian yeast. Added to that are some bourbon flavoring and oak barrel flavor and bitterness. Taste is similar, the yeast and fruit are pure Tripel and the bourbon barrel/oak flavors are a nice complement without overpowering the Tripel flavors. Mouthfeel is rich like a Tripel but there is more of an alcohol presence than with some of the good Tripels.I bought this 12 oz single at Bruisin' Ales in Asheville NC. If I knew how good it was going to be, I would have bought at least a 6 pack!!!!! (908 characters)

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Label says Bottled On 031715.

A- Pours a murky dark amber color with a 1/8 inch off-white head that immediately dissipates to a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and a tiny center patch of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a broken ring behind.

S- Slightly sweet Belgian yeast aroma with a sturdy oak backing. Notes of overripe banana, apple and golden raisin. A bit of a bready characteristic.

T- Very smooth flavor of Belgian yeast and oak with some vanilla tones and more golden raisin. Sweet, but not overly so.

M- Slick but with some zing from the spicy yeast. Medium-low carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Very well done BA tripel. It's no Curieux but a nice attempt at that same flavor profile. (801 characters)

We drank a vertical of 2012, 2013, and 2014 at the brewery tasting room, but I will review the 2012 vintage, which was poured in a tulip, the beer is a hazy, copper-orange coloring with a bubbly, white head. Nose of creamy vanilla, apricot, mango, pineapple, and very subtle nutmeg and clove spices. Flavors are roast forward, with a cream and tropical fruit overtone and a boozy bourbon kick in the backbone. Wow! Vanilla highlights, with a subtle warmth building as you drink. Smooth and robust bodied, with a fruity and vanilla aftertaste. Subtle spice linger on a smooth finish. Unreal! (590 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

There is not much head given to this off the pour, what is presented is a faint tan to white head that settles quickly to a thin collar. Body color is a deep orange, and very murky. Quite unattractive with blotchy colors of yellow and brown. Collar barely maintains any presence while resting.

Nose though is quite enjoyable. Lots of toasty vanilla and caramel sensations, but not much else. However it doesn't have a slight sucrose like quality, but not much else. Quite impressive if some of the classic Belgian characters seem to be shelved a bit.

Palate comes with a very thick but controlled body. Thick sugary malts and lots of light brown sugar flavor. Large rounding oak notes, and a sharp clove like sensing finish. Chewy palate of dense dark sugary sensing malts, with a nice sharp hot brown spices continuing. Moderate amounts of peach and orange fruit to compliment.

A nice example of a tripel that has done well in a barrel. (984 characters)

Picked up two of these beauties at Tasty Beverage downtown. One to celebrate and one to age.

A- Poured heavy into my Bell's tulip glass with a thick head that fades quickly. This beer is surprisingly very hazy with an golden orange tint.

S-The predominate aroma is definitely the bourbon & oak that smacks you in the nose. Followed by light yeast and candied sugar notes.

T-Like the nose the first thing that I get is the whiskey, vanilla, oak flavor that only intensifies as the beer warms. That flavor is nicely complimented with a peppery spice and carmel sweetness that is well balanced. Also I get the yeast flavor that characterizes a lot of tripels. Then the bourbon comes back for a lingering after taste.

M-Nice creamy mouthfeel with low carbonation.

O-Overall a great well balanced beer and one that I will getting on an annual basis. I'm interested in seeing how this one ages. (894 characters)

Big Thanks to ASUBeer for hooking me up with this one.

I must put out the disclaimer: I am not a huge fans of the yeast forward Belgian style ales. However, when they get up into the Tripple range, I tend to find a few more that I enjoy.

First and foremost, the Bourbon Barrel aging made this a very interesting ale all around.

Poured beautiful, with an active head putting forth aromas of Bourbon sweetness with undertones of slightly peppery/fruity yeast.

Taste, was a melange of bourbon, less yeast (the way I prefer it), hints of caramel and fruit.

Felt good in the mouth, not too light, not too chewy.

As it warmed, I found I enjoyed it more. It retained more of a Bourbon flavor, that was straight forward (lacking the other roasty characters that usually come with the barrel). More of that sweet Bourbon flavor, like it had been spiked with Southern Comfort or some other similar libation.

Glad I got to try this one, very interesting. (951 characters)

750ml bottle into a tulip

A: Pours a light honey orange with a nice white head that fades to a ring and leaves some lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is full of apples, vanilla, belgian yeast esters, caramel, and honey. Not much whiskey or barrel influence that I can tell besides maybe the vanilla.

T: The taste is a big improvement over the nose. Lots of flavors ranging from vanilla, whiskey, belgian yeast esters, caramel, and creamy malt.

M: The feel is creamy with a good amount of carbonation. Nice medium body.

O: This is pretty tasty and something I'd try again. I really want to try the base beer now to see how much has changed with the barrel aging. (665 characters)

Bottled in 2012 with a cork and a cage.

a: This is a nice looking beer with an orange tinted medium amber having good clarity. The head retention is alright but a little short lived for the style; the off-white head leaves some lacing on the glass as it settles.

s: This beer has a great balance with the oak character somewhat dominate the solid spicy, fruity belgian tripel aroma. There is a moderate vanilla oaky aroma with some of the carmel bourbon notes. The peppery and spicy phenols along with an orange dominated citrus esters making up the characteristics of the tripel. There is also a slight banana aroma which I think is from the bourbon bit it might be from the yeast, wither way it's fine to have a little in a tripel. There is a little bit of spicy, floral hops aroma and the alcohol adds a light perfumy character.

t: This has the spicy, fruit, wood and alcohol flavors descending order but they're pretty well balanced. The spice is again mostly peppery while the citrus flavor is dominated by orange. The burbon barrel character bring flavors of oak, vanilla and burbon to the party. There is a moderate malt sweetness that might be out of hand if it wasn't for moderately-high bitterness a all the rich flavors going on in this beer. The alcohol is soft and spicy along with a light burbon character coming through.

m: This beer has a medium body along with a creaminess. There is a moderately-high level of carbonation but no astringency. There is some alcohol warming that creeps from your palate to your belly.

o: This is a complex beer that doesn't overwhelm despite all the layers of flavor. It's a very good tripel married with a the burbon barrel. The first time I had this I was a huge fan, an though it was the finest example of an oak aged beer I had ever had, this second time around wasn't as impressive but I did burn my tongue the other day which could be throwing off my taste buds. Fortunately I've got a couple more bottles and will come back and reevaluate after I've recovered. (2,024 characters)

Fills a Royal Chalice with a murky, dark honey, muddy orange beer. The soft pour produced a slight off-white head though the term is used loosely. Highly viscous, this one clings to the glass, leaving a fine coating of lace that waxes and wanes with each sip.

A subtle aroma of fruit and slight whisky. Apple juice mixes with some malt and floral aromas. The light Belgian funkiness is present, though well off in the background.

Warmth is a great friend to this beer, settling the whisky booziness and bringing out the spiciness. While sweet on entry, a light, sour middle carries into a subtle, but lingering, finish. One will also find apricot and apple.

Boozy, though not hot, the dense body is syrupy in texture with prickly carbonation that is quite lively all the way down. Residual sugar builds on the lip with each sip.

This is a beer I had sought after for several years. I found it to be relaxing and enjoyed it while reading inside on a hot, sunny Memorial Day. This was definitely a good trade. I plan to finish the bottle on the front porch after the weather cools down.

Every once in a while, one encounters the unmistakable mark of passion. The brewers at Mother Earth have left that mark on many of their beers. For this, and the ability to recognize it, I am thankful. (1,292 characters)

L: Pours and looks like apple cider. Lots of bubbles and a head that stays for quite some time.
S: Very sweet and fruity. Pineapple notes, apple, sweet, a little kick.
T: Hits being sour and bitter. Not the same notes as in the smell. A little bit of sweetness but it's overpowered quickly by alcohol which seems to dominate the beer.
M: Sits a little sour. Body is decent. It's bearable but not mind blowing.

Overall I was really optimistic about this beer which smelled great and fruity and complex. The taste though is almost exclusively sour and alcohol so not really impressive. It's doable but not blowing my mind. (623 characters)

App- Truly a good looking color. A bit of yellows all mixed in with a good bit of white head that fell slowly with a good amount of cling.

Smell- I didnt get much of the bourbon on the nose really. I did pick up on some vanilla from the barrels and I got some banana and then even some other fruits like pear.

Taste- I got some bourbon on this one but really the flavor was just a strong spicy tripel with some good backing citrus from the pear flavor. A very dry tripel.

Mouth- A full medium body with a medium dry carbonation. Residual fruit and yeast flavors.

Drink- A pretty good beer. The 9% was well hidden and the use of bourbon on a tripel was fairly new for me. I'd like to try to this one again. (790 characters)

A: Pours a hazy orange with a thick two finger off-white head, great retention and thick lacing all around the glass.

S: Sweet bourbon aroma right away. Lots of oak and vanilla and some alcohol. A little bit of apple and pear. Wouldn't be able to tell you that it is a tripel, as the bourbon mask those aromas.

T: Very nice combination of flavors here. Lots of peppery spice mixed with more apple and pear, a little coconut, vanilla, and oak/wood. Slight candied sugar in the middle with the wood really shining through on the finish.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Despite the alcohol showing itself on the aroma, it is pretty subdued on the flavor profile.

O: A beer that started a bit slow, but opened up a lot as it warmed. Another impressive beer from Mother Earth. (821 characters)

full of pears, apples, hints of light grasses and grains. Classic triple with a bit more fruit thrown in. Warming brings about alot more grassy notes and hints of light citrus which carry over well into the flavor. Smooth, loaded with light fruits that pop as it comes up near room temperature. Nice touches of light grains and a smooth, even feel hide the alcohol almost completely. Light oak and smooth bourbon come through in the finish, really nicely done (459 characters)

Bottle acquired by Nick straight from North Carolina, thanks dude! I've been on a Tripel kick lately and am always excited to try something new from Mother Earth. 750 ml corked and caged bottle, poured into two tulip glasses.

A: Cloudy golden bronze with a ever so slightly off-white head. The retention cap covers the entire surface and there are really clingy patches of lacing all over. It's a really nice looking beer but perhaps a bit darker in the body than most Tripels.

S: Massive yeasty notes come off strong in the aroma along with a whiff of alcohol. For being such dominating aromas on their own this threw me off for a second. Honeycomb, sweet caramel malt and caramel apple come through near the end. It smells way more malt and yeast forward than other Tripels, and doesn't seem to strike a good balance.

T: Big alcohol notes are noticeable around mid-palate and well into the finish. Unfortunately these flavors are quite intense and initially mask any flavor present. Belgian yeast elements make their mark along with very bready malts. Overripe citrus fruits are along with the alcohol burn in the finish and just a few seconds into the linger.

M: Fairly active carbonation, nice and fizzy on the palate. It's the mouth feel you'd expect for the style, really well done in this area.

Overall, this wasn't too impressive in comparison to other quality Tripels (both domestic and international). The flavors seemed strikingly unbalanced and in need of some refinement. Other than that, it had all the typical elements you'd expect right down to the great mouth feel but everything else needs to be tied together better. (1,640 characters)

12oz bottle from 04/10, obtained via an in-person trade at DLD '11. Let's see how 18 months have treated this beer.

A: Hazy orange body with a half-inch cap of fizzy white head; mediocre retention and light lace. Ok.

S: Huge, huge bourbon completely dominates, and pleasantly so. Behind the booze lie caramel, apple, and vanilla. It's definitely a bit unbalanced, but the whiskey stands out more than the straight alcohol so I'm really digging it.

T: Follows the nose: bourbon, bourbon, bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and booze. Definitely a bit hot on the finish, but otherwise delightful.

M: Creamy, lively medium body. Solid.

O: This one smells absolutely incredible, but the major booziness keeps it from being a real gem. If it's this hot after a year and a half, I'm sure it was tough to drink when fresh. I think I'll sit on my other bottle for a while.

Appearance: Poured into a crystal sniffer. Cloudy reddish orange with a thick, creamy white head. Excellent head retention. Very smooth head. Light swirling revives the head to full size.

Smell: Apple, pear, pepper, grass, and a strong alcohol scent. There's also a lot of a wood aroma.

Taste: Smoky and slightly toasty flavor. Sweet, dry scotch flavor. Sandy, with a big malty and fruity flavor. Light apple, lemon, and a crisp wood flavor that lasts through into the aftertaste. The wood is very much oak and bourbon in flavor. Earthy and gritty in a good way. A light hop ending as well with a bit of yeasty spice. There's also a very light lingering alcohol flavor that is balanced very well with the woody malt flavors. This tastes great. It is not your ordinary tripel.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and velvety. Well carbonated but not sharp on the palate at all. Coats the palate very well and the flavor opens up nicely.

Drinkability: This beer is absolutely delectable. Wonderfully smooth with a balanced and complex flavor. Other brewers should strive to brew something this good. Need to share this with someone. I wish they made this all year. (1,157 characters)

A: Dark orange with a small white head.

S: Pronounced bourbon and oak with a dash of vanilla and a strong bubblegum presence. Malt is bready and sweet with a sugar notes. Apple is faint.

T: Bread and grain with sugar and bubblegum. Bourbon is light and oak is evident. The beer is quite sweet and alcohol is strong in the finish.

M: Medium in body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: Smelled better than it tasted, and a little too sweet, but still enjoyable. (512 characters)

A: The beer pours a slightly cloudy golden orange color with a finger or two of white head.

S: The barrel has really taken over here. Lots of oak, vanilla, and bourbon notes. The more base Tripel aromas are there, but underneath. A decent amount of banana as well as some sugar, graham cracker, and bubblegum.

T: The flavor is much the same, though it's a bit more fruity and sweet. Heavy on the bourbon and oak with a mild citrus note, banana, and plenty more sugar and bubblegum flavors.

M: Medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Not very Tripel-like anymore, but still pretty good. (633 characters)

A: This poured a cloudy dark gold with a bit of white head.
S: It smelled like toasted oak and vanilla and coconut, with some apricot hops and sour yeast and vinegar.
T: It tasted like apricot and oak and sour yeast, with some coconut and vanilla and vinegar. It had a sweet and sour aftertaste with alcohol warming.
M: It was watery with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This wasn't a very refined beer, seeming more like a shot of bourbon poured into a mediocre tripel. But it's still enjoyable, if you enjoy bourbon. It was a bit hot with weak body, so it wasn't that easy to drink. Age probably wouldn't help, so this is as good as it gets. An interesting experimental beer that I personally enjoyed, since I'm a sucker for bourbon beers, but not great. (762 characters)

A - Orangish bodied beer with a bit of a white head that left some spots on the side.

S - I guess this is a tripel, but bourbon and barrel have obliterated it. Bourbon, wood, vanilla, candy corns, some belgian yeast I think and fruits, but not really.

T - It tastes like bourbon, candy corns, wood, decent amount of alcohol. You get the underlying tripel if you look for it in candied sugar, stone fruits, and some yeast, but it doesn't really matter.

M - Lower carbonation, lighter side of medium bodied.

O - This didn't work, just take any lighter flavored beer and leave it in a barrel to long and it will probably taste like this. Not saying it tastes bad per se, but it's just not good take on a tripel. (750 characters)

On tap at Harrika's in Swansboro, NC. I've had this in both 2010 (12 oz.) and 2011 (750ml) formats from the bottle, and the former is better than the latter. This rate is for the 2011 version on tap.

Pours a hazy caramel-amber with half a finger of head. Okay lacing, but this is one hazy tripel.

Almost nothing distinguishable on the nose. Pale malts, honey sweetness, faint (cheap bourbon), and a touch of vanilla. The 2010 version had a hint of tropical fruit and the bourbon was more pronounced. This is a mess. Also, there's a strong whiff of floor cleaner/solventy booze.

Fairly one-note: sweet honey and faint bourbon. A small hint of coconut, though nothing like last year's. No tripel base to speak of. A good bit of booziness.

Medium carbonation and creamy. A little boozy.

A huge mess. I would give last year's version around a B, but this is muddled and messy. I don't know if I could pinpoint the base style if I didn't know and the bourbon - which was too strong last year - is too faint. This recipe needs to be dialed in. What happened to the coconut from the barrel and the fruity tripel characteristics?

A 750ml bottle purchased from Brawley's Beverage in Charlotte. Poured into a Skull Coast Pint Glass

A- Pours a deep orange with a half finger white head, no lacing at all (pour choice of glass though

S- Not getting a whole lot. Up front it's mainly caramel then a lot of Vanilla, and oak scent.

T- Up front its strong vanilla and oak bourbon flavors. A little bit of citrus and a belgian yeast flavor on the back end. I love the way this tastes. It's on the verge of being to overpowering with the bourbon flavors but it's just right. Slight caramel flavor as well.

M- Medium body and carbonation. Read a lot of reviews of Mother Beers being too carbonated but this one is just about right.

D- The alcohol isn't present at all for a relatively big beer.

Mother Earth continues to do barrel aged beers well (Silent Night is awesome). I am really surprised at such a low rating. I am positive I will buy another bottle of this. Such a great beer. (952 characters)
