Bottled-on date in June of 2013; consumed on Christmas Day 2013.

A: Poured from the bottle into a Chimay Chalice. Body is dark chestnut brown with a half-finger off-white head.

S: A lot going on - brown bread, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) and dark fruits.

T: Very nice. Cola-like at times. Some bready malt, candied sugar, dark fruit (plums, prunes), a touch of spice (cinnamon comes to mind) and finishes with a hint of vanilla. Alcohol is tremendously well-hidden for a beer that's 11% ABV, though some heat shows up in the belly.

M: Medium-to-full bodied in heft; carbonation is slight, leading to a very smooth feel.

O: Excellent beer.

Served chilled into a snifter.

Pours a beautiful walnut brown with half an inch of dark tan head that recedes leaving moderate surface layer and lacing.

Aromas of roasted nuts, toffee and cocoa.

A wonderful mix of flavors. Roasted nuts, toffee, cocoa, coffee. I even picked up hints of leather and tobacco. All present with none being overbearing.

Moderate body with moderate carbonation followed by a fairly dry, woody finish.

Very impressed with this beer. The only downside is I didn't pick up more bottles while it was around. Great winter warmer.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/26/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big caramel, cocoa, toffee, toast, coffee, molasses, clove, pepper, raisin, prune, apple, brown bread, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great dark/bready malt complexity with light-moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester balance; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, cocoa, toffee, toast, coffee, molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, apple, clove, pepper, brown bread, herbal, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, molasses, licorice, clove, herbal, brown bread, light nuttiness, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a great robust malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a slick, bready, and moderately creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome Belgian strong dark ale! All around great complexity and balance of robust dark/bready malts and liught-moderate fruity/spicy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bomber into a wide mouthed wine glass

A: Good auburn, kind of a deep copper color. The head dissolves quickly into simply a tender, white meniscus along the interior of the glass. Little to no lacing here

S: It smells like a sweet coffee shop, notes of fruits, nuts and rum. As it warms up, it starts smelling like root beer too!

T: Candied fruits, rum, brandy, licorice, port wine, a hint of cocoa, coffee notes permeate as it warms up

M: Effervescent at first pour, but the carbonation is tamed over time and temperature

O: A real treat. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. The alcohol is barely palpable, but very delicious.

Not much of a head, enough to cover the surface and then simmer off, a lot of larger bubbles contributes, the lacing is lackluster as well. The liquid is a predictable murky brown with a yellow outside ring, running counter to the visual impression it’s like the whole glass is filled with a swarm of tiny bubbles, overall close to fully opaque. The nose lays on some serious roastiness with coffee bean, caramel, crème brûlée notes, candied nuts, mocha powder, peach, cherry and plum fruit, lower level of baking spices, it has a dry kind of feel to it which keeps the sweetness in check, no overt hoppiness but again it does have a sort of stiff posture which hops can provide. In the mouth it’s fairly full-bodied, smooth for its weight and here too it starts sweetly and ends drily. The roast and toast extravaganza continues, crazy nuttiness, all this coffee, then butterscotch, toffee, chocolate dust and vanilla bean. Light bread and scone notes before something akin to tobacco ash and open fire cinders. More herbaceous and leafy if never outright hoppy. The carbonation is moderate but shows up when it’s needed most. Very flavorful and vivid, a total cold winter night in front of a roaring fire sort of quaff.
