Kasteel Rouge is a blend of Kasteel Donker and cherry liquor. The mix of these two excellent products creates an exceptional soft beer with references to the dark mother beer.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep ruby color with a one finger head of a pinkish hue. The head has a lighter level of retention, fading rather quickly to leave a little bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is potent of cherries, mixed with some other dark fruit smells of plum and raisin. Along with these aromas comes some more Belgian like smells with a nice hit of a yeasty and biscuit malt smell as well as some aromas of grass and a bit of spice of coriander.

Taste – The taste begins with a big and sweet dark cherry flavor mixed with a little bit of a biscuit malt flavor. As taste advances some other, lighter in nature, dark fruit flavors of plum and raisin come to the tongue. While these other dark flavors come to the tongue, the cherry transitions more from a sweet nature to more still sweet, but slightly sour nature, which overall ends up lessening the sweetness of the brew ever so slightly. All the while other flavors of some yeast and a little bit of spice of clove develop on the tongue. In the end with a little bit of an earthy and grassy flavor coming to the tongue, one is left with a rather dark fruited sweet, but not obnoxiously so, rich Belgian flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side for a brew of 8 % abv. with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. For the style the feel is rather nice as it is thinner and refreshing all while nicely matching the mix of dark fruit flavors with that of the Belgian nature.

Overall- A nice and tasty brew that has a great level of darker fruit flavor all while not being obnoxious in sweetness. This is a rather pleasant drinker and a well crafted fruit beer overall.

11.2 oz bottle - bottled-on date of 2014/04/23, so at time of review aged for just under 11 months. Served at 43 F (as recommended on the bottle) into a goblet.

Appearance is beautiful - deep clear garnet with brilliant ruby highlights when held up to light, 1.5 fingers of rosy off-white head which dissipates quickly but remains a 1/8 inch film on top of the beer. This is a sexy lookin' brew!

Smell is complex - best described as a combination of maraschino cherry, dark sweet cherry, and a complex spicy, earthy, floral component that makes me think of some sort of incense. Slightly off-putting, but interesting enough where I want to find out what's making that smell...

Taste is hugely fruity, sweet cherry in the front, tart cherry in the middle, dry finish with a slight earthy/yeasty character. If they were to make a dark cherry soda for adults, this is what it would taste like!

Mouth-feel is interesting, highly carbonated on the tongue which creates a prickly sensation adding to the tartness of the cherry flavor, but this gives way to a slick and smooth sensation - like a reward for making it through the prickles. Low to medium bodied throughout it all.

Overall, a very interesting brew. The flavor and carbonation combo is knockout! Like a ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bomb! That being said, there's not a whole lot that makes me think "beer" when I drink this apart from the yeasty aftertaste, but I'm somehow still very entranced by the flavor and aroma qualities. A great choice for when you want a beer, but don't want a beer at the same time - if that makes sense. In a nutshell - Fun and uncomplicated.

Kasteel Rouge has a thin, crackly, pink head, a semi-clear, dark red appearance, and not a lot of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of beer with strong cherries in it. Taste is the same, and the cherry note is acidic and seemingly natural. Mouthfeel is low medium, and Kasteel Rouge finishes semi-wet and highly drinkable for an 8% abv ale.
