St-Louis Gueuze Fond Tradition is a pure traditional gueuze aimed at connoisseurs. It has the pure taste of a true gueuze based on a blend of young and old lambics. Fruity apple aromas stand out. When tasting, the slightly sour touches, characteristic of lambic beers, make their presence felt. It is very dry in the finish.

375ml bottle dated 11/13/12 in wine glass

Murky golden color with head reducing to ring of clumpy lacing. Light floral, fruity and bready malt aromas with some sourness. Taste is some bright fruit with moderate sourness. Some bready malt (oxidation?) which lingers unpleasantly on the aftertaste. Relatively thin and light mouthfeel with fizzy carbonation. Not very complex but refreshing and drinkable despite the aftertaste. Not a bad beer but not a great gueuze.

Pours mostly clear amber with a khaki cap. Aromas of oxidized apple and lemon, minerals with wet hay and bretty funk but overshadowed by vinegar. Taste is just so wet of a complexion that it weighs the beer down, sweet apple, wet hay and wheat, a hint of nail polish remover, minerals, brett, some vanilla and a kiss of oak. Feel is wet, thin, still, sour with decent acidity, lacks funk complexity, generally astringent on the finish.

Unknown vintage; no easy code to read for bottling date.

Cloudy dark orange appearance.

A slow pour yielded a minimal off-white head; almost no lace.

Apple, wheat & chlorine notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

While the tart apple & mild wheat notes are pleasant, there is a chlorine flavor here that makes it taste a bit like pool water. Not one I'll return to.

L: Light copper, well-carbonated for the age of this bottle. Quickly becomes still, no lacing.

S: Mineral water with a hint of apple.

T: Lots of mineral up front, with a apple tartness that’s closer to “Granny Smith” than “cider vinegar”.

F: Dry, light and delicate on the tongue, just like a lambic should be.

O: Not as complex as everyone’s favorite brewers of this style, but very refreshing and pairs well with frites.

375mL bottle from 2014 or earlier (no discernible date listed on the label or bottle).

Bottle at Las Buenas Pulgas, served at home in a flute glass. Copper color, medium head with short retention, no lacing. Aroma or grapes, ripened fruits, a bit of acidity, maybe apples. Medium body, fruity texture, flat carbonation. A bit sour finish. Taste is a bit tart, grapes, fruits. Simple, one is enough.

Pours clear copper amber red orange with a dissipating white foam head. Leathery, almost plasticy aromas, some phenolic spice, hint of cherry, stone fruit, apple, slight vanilla, oak, some caramel, maybe an odd touch of chocolate, toasty bready malt, with some floral earthy herbal hops. Tastes like slight sweet vinegar, hint of cherry, apple, stone fruit, lemon, vanilla, oak, leather, hay, straw, wheaty toasty bready malts, caramel, spice, with floral earthy herbal hops. Feels medium lighter bodied, slick with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a nice gueuze.

It pours a dark red body with lots visible floaties. No head to speak of.

It has an aroma of fermented cherries, with a slight cattiness to it.

It has a strong taste of fermented cherries and tart, with a hint of alcohol. The mouthfeel is full bodied, dry and really sour, with little bitterness and medium carbonation. The aftertaste is dry.

An excellent kriek.
