A 375ml half-champagne bottle with a BB of April 2013. Comes in a posh paper wrapper. Purchased from a supermarket a while back and stored in my garage. A raspberry beer made using Flanders oude bruin as the base; the ingredient list mentions that sugar and sweetener have been added (so presumably it has been pasteurised/filtered).

Poured into a Delirium chalice. A deep reddish-brown hue with good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam with a pinkish tinge; this lasts for a while before reducing to a persistent surface layer. Aroma of intensely sweet raspberries with an underlying vinegary sourness and subtle hints of malt and earthy yeast. Seriously fruity, but the acidity gives it some depth.

Tastes of juicy raspberries with mild acidity and a sweet, dry finish. Notes of raspberries, sugar, mild vinegar, subtle malt and faint earthy yeast. There is a synthetic quality to the sweetness, and a background harshness upon swallowing (possibly the sweetener). Mouthfeel is smooth, acidic and pleasingly tingly, with good carbonation and decent body. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of sweet raspberries and mild sourness.

Quite nice - not the best Belgian fruit beer I've had but a cut above many. The aroma/flavour are dominated by fruit, with faint undertones of malt and vinegar. The biggest flaw is the use of sweetener, which is noticible in the taste and spoils the overall character. A more acidic brew would have been much better. Despite this, it remains surprisingly drinkable - worth trying if you come across it.

2nd Nov 2012, mini-tasting evening @ home: 37.5cl cork and caged green bottle wrapped in its paper and poured into two flute shapped glasses.

Red body, thin wispy head on each glass.

The smell is all about raspberries as is the taste: nicely carbonated and semi-sour, a lot better than I thought it might be.

I tend to leave the Belgian fruit beers alone but I'm glad I decided to buy one of these the other year: sat in my home bar for well over 18 months and cooled for two days before opening.

A - Pours a nice dark ruby red colour, thumb of beige head with solid retention and sporadic lacing.

S - Raspberries, raspberries and more raspberries with a touch of bready malt.

T - the raspberries are dominant but not synthetic, quite sweet but enough bready malt to remind you it's beer. Touch of pepper and a hint of sour mash.

M - Ligjter bodies ale that goes down smooth an finishes wet.

O - A tasty fruit ale that doesn't come across as overly synthetic. Well worth a try and certainly glad I was able to try it.
