Stubby 11.2 oz bottle picked up at Brewer's Haven.. Bottled on 5/29/13... Enjoyed about 21 months later from a large bulb goblet.. 1 finger head rises up and dies back pretty quickly leaving no lacing and no real cap.. the brew is deep dark walnut.

Thick malty nose leans heavily on the dark raisins.. boozy with warmth, burns the eyes a bit.. Spicy yeasty phenols make me think clove first and pepper second.. Esters are raisin with dark cherries.. a bit of oxidation.

Flavor is hot and a little thin, the beer drops off the tongue quickly.. leaving fizzy raisin alcohol.. Okay.. The carbonation scrubs the flavor very fast, but if you try, there is some fruity esters and plenty of spicy phenols..

Very burpy.. Sharp alcohol... Seems a pretty big mess at this point IMO.

Black, almost opaque. Aromas of chocolate, dried fruit and bread on the nose but with a look and smell much more winey. However, in the tasting, vinous character, it enhances the lubricity, does not add acidity and leaves near the potion Kasteel Brune, sugar and less. A small taste of Puerto complements the taste by adding creaminess to the finish syrupy.

A: Dark brown color with light brown foam - low head retention.
S: Raisins, dried plums, and caramel. An intense and "dark" smell, but still quite fruity. Pleasant.
T: The alcohol is highly recognizable with a sweet burnt malt flavor. The licorice in the aftertaste is a little overpowering.
M: Nice carbonation. A medium plus body.
O: Pleasant aromas, but it could be better balanced.

A quadrupel from Kasteel line, ABV up to 11%, quite overpowering!

The color shows deep dark brown, with beautiful and delicate foam.

Smell: burnt malt, dark cherry, roasted dark sugar smell.

Taste: medium plus mouthfeel, extremely smooth with strong burnt malt, dark cherry, chocolate, with licorice undernote. However, it is a very sweet beer overall, winey finish.

A: For me, this is overly sweet though complicated that I can hardly finish a bottle myself! It's more like personal preference I suppose...

A: This is a very dark beer with a small head.

S: The scents of almonds and a little bit of caramel.

T: Slightly sour and also sweet with a bitter aftertaste.

M: Decent carbonation and a nice mouthfeel.

O: Heavy not easily drinkable beer, but tasteful and fairly complex.

Had on tap at Track 84 on 5.4.2010. Served in a tulip. Poured an opaque mahogany with burgundy highlights when backlit. A half inch, creamy, off-white head quickly receded into a thin consistent skim - no lacing present during the tasting. Nose was very subdued - some malt and a slightly vinous quality. Taste follows nose - dark fruit dominates, but not particularly malty, sweet or complex. Flavor profile is lacking the big malty, sugary quality I've come to associate with the style. Mouthfeel is medium-light with a subtle carbonation - somewhat thin for the style, with a slightly dry finish. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Not really style consistent; closer to a Belgian Strong Dark in my opinion. Alcohol was well-hidden, but I was a bit disappointed by this beer.

Poured into 2 wine glasses. Bottled 5-27-2010.

A- Pours a blood red hue. A crispy bubbly head forms before quickly receding. Sits dark and still.

S- Mild tones. Sweet cherry juice, a slight tart tang. Rather basic in nose.

T- Tangy and sweet cherries. Some mild zesty tartness. A strong malty body with some solid undertones keeps this from being one dimensional. Sweetness is strong but not overbearing.

M- Tangy on front of tongue, lingers well. Starts wet and has a smooth mild drying action. Medium bodied.

O- Quite drinkable for such a cherry forward beer that isn't a sour. Easy to split a 750mL. The alc isn't noticeable. good.

This beer is brewed to mimick the regular kasteel donker that is aged for 10 years.
Look: The beer pours a dark-amber color with a nice head
Smell: Sweet malts, sugar, dried dark fruits
Taste: Follows the nose; sweet malts, molasses, dark sugar, dark fruits and some spicy sharp aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, Medium bodied
Overall: Not so bad, but it is supposed to be compared with aged kasteel and having real aged kasteel and this one side by side, this one is very very disappointing. Much sharper and less soft than the aged version.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ, the Donker aged in steel for 10 years, so vintage 2000,

A: Pours brown with a soft white head into a goblet, nice lace.

S: Surprisingly light, but some notes of malt and molasses, very sugary.

T: Clearly drier than the Brune, but still is a bit sweet. Moderate notes of residual sugar. Dark malt, raisin, but really didn't add any complexity over the 10 years. It tastes good, but that's about it.

M: Off-dry, creamy, very soft carbonation. Not as thick and cloying sweet as the Brune.

D: I think it's cool that this beer was brewed when I was in high school. That being said, I didn't really get anything except a drier version of the Donker. That's fine, I guess I just expected more.

Bottle from Half Time poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of toffee, plum, dates and yeast. Mouthfeel was medsium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, cola, dark fruit and yeast with a smooth lingering cola finish.

2010 vintage, bottled 5-27-2010.

Pours a very dark chestnut brown color with slight purplish hues and a half finger beige head that immediately fades into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.

Spicy aroma with dark malts and estery dark fruit. Slight earthy and funky with some pepper and a slight medicinal presence. Nice roasted malt character with hints of cocoa and coffee countered by plum, raisin and fig.

Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a strong zesty spice presence up front that lingers over a chewy, roasted malt character and estery dark fruits into a slightly dry finish. There's a nice balance of pepper, medicinal syrup, chocolate cake, lightly roasted coffee, plum, raisin and grape. Fuller bodied with a much stronger malt presence than I expected. Also, the high ABV is excellently masked resulting in a flavorful beer that's easy to put down.

Appearance : dark brown color, with tan foamy head.
Smell : roasted malt and chocolate aromas.
Taste and mouthfeel : sweet malty flavoured.
Drinkabiliy : good beer in the belgian style; but too sweet for my taste

Pour deep clear red-brown, finger and a half of light brown head that quickly drops off to a lace.

Aroma is faint and musty when cool, dominated by alcohol as it warms. Not this brews strong point.

Flavor is malt heavy with lots of fruit esters and good amount of hot alcohol. Raisin, oat and toffee are the big notes with some lingering cherry on the backend. Fairly dry for a quad with a significant alcohol burn.

Mouthfeel is generally light for a quad, thinned by the big alcohol and fairly lively CO2 level.

Similar flavor profile to Kasteel Winter, with the toffee and raisin, only a lot more alcohol burn. Aroma predominantly recalls a dirty urinal, thankfully it is pretty faint and blasted by alcohol as it warms. Not a bad beer, but I can do better at this price point.

Closing out the night with a Belgian ale. This is a 2010 Cuvee du Chateau, which is corked, caged, and covered tightly in paper. On to the beer:

Into a Kasteel chalice it goes, the beer's color is chocolate brown with a small head forming on the pour, quickly fizzing away to a thin lace around the glass. The nose is strong, sweet, and very alcoholic. Red grapes and red wine come to mind first. Touch of licorice and Good & Plenty. Lots of alcohol is present, and it smells like some medical ointment. Let's drink...

The aroma comes off aggresive, but the taste is more comforting to approach. Sweet with a slight semi-tartness. The flavors of cherries, red grapes, dates, and bread crust make their mark. A moderate dose of alcohol makes its presence, especially when the beer goes down and warms your throat and tummy. Its a full bodied beer with low-medium carbonation, drinks slow but steady, and is an adequte example of the quadruppel.

A: Poured a dark hazy brown. Good carbonation but held no head. A flare up of fizz bubbled up after pouring it into a tulip, reminiscent of a soda.

S: Rich and leathery. There's a distinct sweetness of red raspberry syrup. Hints of wet oak.

T: A thick rich maltiness starts first with dark roasted walnut and charred (not burnt) wood. Raisin and black cherry. Tangy bitter sourness overpowers from the back of the palette rushing forward. The bitterness is a little acidic like a balsamic. In my opinion, I would have liked it slightly less bitter and less oaky to let the other sweet and sour fruitiness shine forward. A final sweetness finishes the flavor profile. Fortunately the acidity softened a little as it rested in the glass, much like a nice wine.

M: Medium consistency. Fairly dry finish at the back of the tongue.

O: This one didn't completely work for me. It was just too vinegary. I found that sour alkaline finish acrid. It did soften up a bit as it sat and I liked many of the other qualities of the flavor profile like the thick prune notes, but I won't be rushing back to cuvée du chateau.

Pours a dark brown with a ruby tint. Tan head falls to about nothing. Thinnest of lace.

Aroma is of sweet malts with hints of plums and raisin.

Big sweet malts up front. Big booze is next and you just can't help but notice it. Nice sweet fruits in there but alcohol is the prominent flavor.

Medium bodied and biting. Very warming.

Good brew. I love a strong, boozy beer but this is too much. Only 11% and it does not hide it well

On-tap at Stone

A: The pour is a dark amber color with a thin off-white head.

S: The nose has a definite sugary, sweet note to it. Plenty of caramel malt and brown sugar, along with ripened dark fruits.

T: As the nose would indicate, there's a lot of sweet, bready malts, brown sugar, plums, and raisins. Pretty standard flavors with a bit of a dry finish.

M: The body is fairly full with a soft, low carbonation and the aforementioned dryness.

D: A bit sweet for me, but not bad. The flavors are good, but considering what this beer "is", I was expecting a bit more.

A - A deep red/brown ale with, a hard to get, beige head. The retraction is quick.

S - The smell is a bit musty with a slight port like scent.

T - A nice port/wine like tones and a bit sweet. It is like drinking a watery port.

M - High carbonation which I didn't expect for a beer of this age. There was no bitterness anymore and the alcohol was hard to detect.

O - This is a real nice to drink evening warmer.

2010 vintage.
Very light fizzy head fades fairly quickly to pretty much nothing, over super dark brown colored beer with hints of ruby maroon light coming through the thinner bottom part.

Nose is interesting, mostly dark malts, a madeira like sauce as well that adds a hint of Worcestershire sauce or BBQ with vinegar or something. Dark fruit, like fig, prune juice, again a vinegary like base that reminds me of BBQ sauce or Ketchup or something similar. A bit of candi sugar and brown sugar, molasses, etc.

Taste is more typical for a quad, dark malts, candi, fruits, booze. Dark fruits come though with fig, prune, date, etc, and hint of brandy soaked raisin. Dark malts, but more like Belgian special B or dark syrupy malts, with a light buttered coconut like taste as well which is kinda weird. Syrups bring candi sugar, brown sugar, molasses, and syrup in general. Booze brings light esters, and not quite as boozy as I expected, but there is some tingly warming booze. The juicy fruits and malts fade to a drier finish with a bit of lingering booze, fruits, and syrups. Later on the finish light phenols come out from the booze and Belgian yeast.

Mouth is bigger bodied, some warming booze, decent but lighter carb.

Overall not bad, there are plenty better Belgian quads out there, but this is decent all things considered. Most other Kasteel beers I've had were also better.

Limited release from this Kasteel Donker, brewed in 1998, as stated on the bottle. Supplier's recommendation at my local liquor store.
6 euro for 75 cl bottle.

I'm not at all familiar with aged beers, but I was told this particular brew held well in the breweries' cellars.

Dark brown beer with a beige head. It's lightly fizzy, the head disappearing rather fast.
Smell is very fresh: clear fresh red and black fruits, like berries, strawberries, cherries. Lightly sour scent, with a hint of caramel.
Taste is very balanced and mellow. The alcohol is very well masked. It's got roasty malt notes, some coffee and nuts. Mainly though, there's sweet 'n sour notes of the fruits.

Smooth and rather easy in the mouth for it's 11 % abv. In the aftertaste there is the alcohol present.

It's ok drinkable, but the alcohol becomes rather strong toward the end of the 75 cl there's still some carbonation left, making the booze pretty active .

I have not had much experience with older bottlings, but this is surely a brew that aged well enough for my taste.
Perhaps hard to obtain, but defenately recommended if you can find it.

Darker than expected with an appealing nose. Rich in the tongue, with afternotes of fruit and molasses. Incredibly smooth for a quad, this beer goes down too easily. A pleasure to drink, and I look forward to the next visit.

First had: on tap at Teresa's, Wayne, PA

Poured a dark mahogany color with a small cap of off-white head. Caramel and brown sugar in the nose, lots of dark, dried fruit; decent aroma but not too pronounced. The taste follows the nose for the most part, with dark caramel, honey, brown sugar, plums, raisins, figs, black cherries, and a subtle hint of cocoa in the background. Actually a bit similar to Kasteel Rouge in some ways, but a bit more complex array of flavors. Thick in the mouth, heavy-medium body, kind of syrupy, low carbonation, and a definite alcohol warmth that balances out the thickness a bit. Quite enjoyable, and I'd like to sample it again.

A dark brown beer with a settling head, which disappears after a while. No head is visible.

The smell is malty with a sweet and port-like sensation. The beer has a tart smell that also has some cherry and berries in the smell. LIght dark malts which are not burned or roasted.

The taste is sweet with the port taste also present. The berries and tartness remind me of lacto or brett? The beer is sweet, but light in a way, it is drinkable, and not cloying at one point. The first sip I suspected artificial sweeteners but this beer is the best beer from this brewery.

A: Maroon brown with a slight head. The body of the beer reflects color very well.
S: It has a sweet and sour aroma with some nice malty aroma that really comes off as slightly sour and fruity.
T: Sour and bready with an almost wine character though slightly smoother. It feels like a strong red wine character that would pair well with meat.
M/O: Very crisp and carbonated with some nice sensations on the nose. Very much masks the strong alcohol content but still delivers some very strong flavor.
