Drank a 0.75 2010 bottle a while ago and still have another: this review however is from an on-tap glass I had in the Antwerp Gollem on Sunday 16 Dec 2012.

Deep, dark brown with ruby red hints: on top a tan coloured crown of foam that hung around for the whole tasting.

Sweet malty molasses with Port like strength and flavours fill the nose and mouth; this is one tasty beer.

Small sips are the order of the day, don't want to rush this or take huge gulps, let it slip down the throat in minute quantities and savour the moment.

Really enjoyed it: this sort of brew is one of the reasons I love going to Belgium so much!

2010 vintage, bottled 5-27-2010.

Pours a very dark chestnut brown color with slight purplish hues and a half finger beige head that immediately fades into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.

Spicy aroma with dark malts and estery dark fruit. Slight earthy and funky with some pepper and a slight medicinal presence. Nice roasted malt character with hints of cocoa and coffee countered by plum, raisin and fig.

Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a strong zesty spice presence up front that lingers over a chewy, roasted malt character and estery dark fruits into a slightly dry finish. There's a nice balance of pepper, medicinal syrup, chocolate cake, lightly roasted coffee, plum, raisin and grape. Fuller bodied with a much stronger malt presence than I expected. Also, the high ABV is excellently masked resulting in a flavorful beer that's easy to put down.

Large bottle, $9 and change at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY. Caged/corked/foiled, the whole deal including bottled on dating (100527), and a dated cork (Mis en bouteille 04/2010)

Pours darkest of browns, moderate darker tan head, going to a splotchy film, and leaves some dense bands of sheeting and bigger blobs of lacing.

Love the rum raisin nose of a quality BSDA, with some sugary fruit added to the party.

Complex, large and flavorful. Rum, raisins, dark figs, dense and tasty stuff. On the moderate side bodywise, equals dangerously drinkable.

Mighty fine stuff-Belgian lovers rejoice and go get some.

Closing out the night with a Belgian ale. This is a 2010 Cuvee du Chateau, which is corked, caged, and covered tightly in paper. On to the beer:

Into a Kasteel chalice it goes, the beer's color is chocolate brown with a small head forming on the pour, quickly fizzing away to a thin lace around the glass. The nose is strong, sweet, and very alcoholic. Red grapes and red wine come to mind first. Touch of licorice and Good & Plenty. Lots of alcohol is present, and it smells like some medical ointment. Let's drink...

The aroma comes off aggresive, but the taste is more comforting to approach. Sweet with a slight semi-tartness. The flavors of cherries, red grapes, dates, and bread crust make their mark. A moderate dose of alcohol makes its presence, especially when the beer goes down and warms your throat and tummy. Its a full bodied beer with low-medium carbonation, drinks slow but steady, and is an adequte example of the quadruppel.

Kasteel Cuv'ee Du Chateau

2010 edition. Corked and caged bottle, opens with a resounding pop. Poured into oversized wine glasses, a rich deep amber/mahogony hue with an off white dense head that recedes away over time. Aroma is fruity, bready, a touch of alcohol, dark fruits and brown sugar. In the taste, ripe grape, raisen, and plum but mostly grape. Alcohol is well in check and stays in the background. Pleasing dark fruits, some malt body lending caramel and brown sugar notes. Damn tasty. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and effervescent, semi-dry on the finish. Overall, a really nice beer, great flavors, clean and has the potential to age quite well.

On tap at Teresa's next door the other day.

The beer pours a dark cola color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is also pretty attractive, showing cherry, light milk chocolate, some vanilla and a hint of ginger. This beer smells pretty good, but it still didn't prepare me for the carousel of flavors I encontered on the palate. This beer showcases a terrific array of chocolate, brown sugar, rootbeer and spice, but then on the finish that black cherry really kicks in. Yummmm!!!! The mouthfeel is medium bodied, and the beer seemed to have no more then moderate sweetness. It actually finishes with a fairly light and dry finish, albeit spice infused throughout. Drinkability in this beer is sensational... the alcohol is just no where to be seen.

This decandently delicious beer is flat out dangerous.... that's how easy drinking it is. Impressive. Really hope this beer makes it down to Baltimore, as I'd like to see this around from time to time.

On-tap at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy and dark amber-brown color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a thin cap on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of sweet malts with hints of biscuit malt aromas. Also present are large amounts of dark fruits - plums and raisins mostly - with slight amounts of pears.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Sweet dark malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by sugar-coated dark fruits. Raisins are predominant with hints of dried plums and figs. Midway through the sip the fruit flavors lighten up a bit and then carry through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very nice thickness with fine carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass quickly and could have another without a problem.

Overall I was a fan of this beer however it wasn't quite as complex as I would have liked given the big ABV. Still, a nice sipper that's worth a shot in the colder months.

Foil and cork capped bottle served in a Unibroue snifter. 2010 vintage on label; 4/2010 stamped on cork.

A: Hazy, cola-colored brown body; a bit murky but not opaque. Tan foamy head quickly settles to a thick ring and some thin 'islands', leaving splotchy lace on the glass.

S: An appealing and sweet mix of brown sugar, dark bread, raisins, prunes and other dark fruits, caramel, and some spicy Belgian yeast. Some alcohol tones and a hint of molasses or sorghum syrup.

T: Taste is also quite rich and complex, and has a similar character, although not nearly as sweet as the aroma suggests. An exceptionally well-integrated mix of flavors featuring dark fruits, and dark bread. Hints of brandy and yeast. It has a moderately spicy finish with hints of nutmeg and anise. Alcohol is even more hidden than in the nose.

M: Full-bodied, with low+ carbonation; smooth. Only a very slight harshness from the high ABV but, of course, warming when swallowed. [3.75]

Overall: An outstanding quad. Sold 'pre-aged' but may well also have benefited from some further aging in my cellar. Mellow and easy to drink for the style, despite the 11% ABV, yet plenty rich and complex. Highly recommended.

Bottled 7/14/2010. Poured into my St. Feuillien goblet, Cuvée Du Chateau is dark brown with a small tan head leaving light, foamy lace.

Smell is big esters, loads of grape, strawberry, bubblegum. Clean, spicy alcohol.

Taste is absolutely amazing. Wow. What a killer quad. Such a clan, pure fruitness, nice little spiciness and clean phenols to cut it, super smooth.

Mouthfeel is slippery and light, the epitome of digestible.

Drinkability is dangerously high. This is a fantastic beer. Absolutely world class; it may have equals, but is unsurpassable.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown color and a cloudy consistency. There was a small amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Not a whole lot of lacing.

S: A big aroma of dark fruit, chocolate, and malt.

T: Tasted of chocolate (just enough), some malt, a bit of yeast, and dark fruit (raisins, plums, etc.). Boozy, but in a good way. A powerful, complex, well done flavor.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a somewhat harsh finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is definitely not a beer wimps. It's big, strong and forceful. It's also well made and totally drinkable.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip. This is the 2010 cuvée.

Appearance: dark brown with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Body seems to be haze-free with a moderate effervescence. Head is a finger of fizzy tan foam which subsides relatively quickly. Not too bad.

Smell: sweet malt with a very big raisin component, backed up by a nice pear and date bouquet. Not dramatically complex for the style, but I really like the composition. Mmmm.

Taste: very much like the aroma, with an emphasis on raisin, date and pear; there's also a pretty strong alcohol component here, which I suppose is not surprising. Quite a bit of sweetness features here, but that's acceptable for the style and works with the darker fruits.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a good creaminess. Satisfying enough for me, although for a big Belgian quad I expect a whole lot. Still, quite good indeed.

Overall: this beer is a bit on the hot side, at least in the aftertaste, but I like the dark fruit composition. Beers of this style don't have to work too hard to be pretty tasty to me; still, this guy is worth a shot if you like the style.

Pours a deep amber to black in color with a small light tan head. In the aroma, dark fruit, figs and raisins, and a small alcohol note. In the taste, dark fruit, raisin stands out and a caramel like sweetness and a pinch of alcohol. A small alcohol bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry dark fruit like aftertaste. Kind of somewhere between a barleywine and the Donker, nice nonetheless.

Had on tap at Track 84 on 5.4.2010. Served in a tulip. Poured an opaque mahogany with burgundy highlights when backlit. A half inch, creamy, off-white head quickly receded into a thin consistent skim - no lacing present during the tasting. Nose was very subdued - some malt and a slightly vinous quality. Taste follows nose - dark fruit dominates, but not particularly malty, sweet or complex. Flavor profile is lacking the big malty, sugary quality I've come to associate with the style. Mouthfeel is medium-light with a subtle carbonation - somewhat thin for the style, with a slightly dry finish. I have to say that I was a little disappointed. Not really style consistent; closer to a Belgian Strong Dark in my opinion. Alcohol was well-hidden, but I was a bit disappointed by this beer.

Pours a dark reddish tinted brown color with khaki colored head that dicipates quickly. Scent is bold, yet refined... rasisin, burnt carmel, rum, slightly oxidized wine and some prune and fig. While the whiffs hinted at strength, the taste brings all the components of scent together in an ultra smooth beverage, not one flavor overpowers the other. Medium bodied, smooth, good moderate carbonation. A nice, in control and sophisticated BSDA.

A: This poured a very dark mahogany with moderate tan head.
S: It smelled like grassy hops and sulfur, with underlying rich caramel and brown sugar and raisin, and lots of sour Belgian yeast.
T: It tasted like earthy caramel and rich brown sugar and powdered sugar and raisin, with sour Belgian yeast and a bit of floral hops and sulfur. It had a very mellow sweet and sour aftertaste.
M: It was slick and oily with moderate smooth natural carbonation.
D: This had great delicate complexity leading to delicious taste. It had great body too, and hid the alcohol amazingly well, so it was super easy to drink. But it was also good enough to sip and savor. However, there was a very unpleasant sulfur element to the scent (dominant) and taste (subtle). I'm not sure what's causing that, or if age would help that or make it worse. That's the only thing keeping this from being a top BSDA.
