A: Pours a ruby red with a puffy, lingering pink head. Unlike some others, I actually like the appearance of some of these commercial lambics.

S: Very sweet and confected on the nose with aromas of heavy cream, cake frosting, candy sugar, and red raspberry leading the way. I was hoping for a little more depth, or some authentic lambic character at the very least...

T: Notes of red raspberries, cream, vanilla, candy sugar, cake frosting, and tart cherries flit across the palate. The finish starts off sweet with sugar and raspberry flavors before a quick punch of acidic cherry and wild yeast asserts itself.

M: Light bodied, dry, firm, and spritzy. Very drinkable.

O: Of the St. Louis beers, this is by far the best one I've tried. Unlike many commercial framboise lambics, this one is not cloying.

Appearance - This is a brownish-red in color with a small head. One thing I love about raspberry lambics is the bright raspberry color but this one is a bit dingy and uninviting.

Smell - The aroma on the other hand is beautiful. There's a deep richness to the raspberry smell like the fruit has been cut open and sprinkled with sugar.

Taste - The flavor is equally deep. This is not like that imitation fruit flavor you get with some efforts at the style. This is rich and elegant with a touch of sourness.

Mouthfeel - This is no lightweight in the mouth and the light sour notes just do make you pucker a bit.

Drinkability - I hate to admit that I chugged a fruit lambic but I just couldn't put this one down.

Update - I haven't had this in over three years to thought I'd get a bottle and compare it to my original review. Thankfully it hasn't changed a bit.

On tap at Hopcat in Grand Rapids. Enjoyed this one alongside a jam-packed quesadilla. It pours a deep ruby color with a slightly pink and purple type of tint to it. Opaque for the most part, although some light beams through the very extremities. The head is soft, foamy, and tinted a vibrant shade of pink as well - quick to fade with no lacing left behind.

St. Louis Framboise has an aroma that is jam packed with fruity goodness, right from the start. Raspberries take the center stage - what a shocker, I know. However there seems to be a solid cherry character on the nose, too, which works quite nicely with the raspberry. Soft and mostly sweet, but it never reaches the level of being sour or tart. It's safe to say that the aroma is a bit of a one-trick pony, but it's still quite nice and certainly refreshing. After all, it achieves what it has set out to achieve, right?

Up front, I get hit with a slight touch of tartness almost immediately, something I wasn't expecting based on the lack of "sourness" detected on the nose. However, the tartness subsides quickly and this beer is pretty far from being sour - it's actually rather sweet. Fruits jump out and run rampant from start to finish; a huge berry bonanza. Raspberries, blackberries, and cherries - juicy, ripe, and delicately sweet. There isn't much to balance the sweetness, however the sweetness really isn't high enough to need balance, so it works just fine. Thin bodied for the most part, slick and wet on the palate with medium-high carbonation and a slight snap on the mouth feel.

Pretty nice and refreshing lambic here. Not much "sour" happening, rather lots of sweetness. Huge raspberry flavor gets coupled nicely with a bit of cherry, too. Pretty similar to Lindeman's Framboise, though it's been quite a while since I've had that one, so I don't know if I can say for sure which one is better. Very close, though, and would both go well with this quesadilla.

$7, 7.5oz glass on tap at the Brickskeller in Washington DC.

Well worth the price, as this is not sold where I live. An absolutely delicous lambic. Wonderfully tart & sweet at the same time, but keeps an excellent balance, not tipping one way or the other. Light but not wimpy, absolutely refreshing. I could drink this stuff like it was juice. And I do. Liquid candy.

Appearance: minimal head and carbonation, reddish/brown in color, cloudy

Smell: lots of raspberries

Taste: sweet raspberries and sugar

Mouthfeel: very sweet--almost syrupy, high carbonation, light bodied

Drinkability: A fantastic lambic..a touch of sourness to meld with the sweetness. I could sip this all day.

Bottled 100406
A- The deep cranberry body is dens but clear with a pink sherbert head of foam on top that fades to a thin film and a gentle carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- The bright, dark red raspberry fruit dominates with an almost overripe aroma. Not a lot of support to follow.

T- The red raspberry fruit flavor taste a bit like jello with a dry tartness in the finish and a slight sweetness of raspberries lingers.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with no alcohol heat and a soft tickle of fizz on the tongue.

D- The nice raspberry flavor is not overly sweet and does have a nice fruit flavor. This is definitely not a fruit lambic but it is a nice fruit beer. Just a bit more depth would be nice if I were to drink more than one.

Ruby red with a nice thick pink head in my tulip glass.
Surprise, surprise, lots of raspberry aroma. Does smell a
little like "beer," as my wife would say.
So sweet on the tongue. Slight raspberry tartness but it is like drinking raspberry sorbet after it melts. Whatever beer flavor I might have thought there was is no longer available to my tongue. It is still trying to recover from the sweetness.
A good once in a while beer. I'm still surprised at how sweet it is. Sorbet beer, I tell ya. Might be good for cooking even, I imagine.

Had this on tap one sunny afternnoon at Kelleher's in downtown Peoria after a long walk down the riverfront. Served in a tulip glass, this deep purple brew had a 1/2 finger head of pink foam that stuck around quite a while.

Smells of fresh tart raspberries. Not very complex, but the smell of raspberries is very acurate...very close to sticking your nose in a bowl of freshly picked raspberries.

Tastes like raspberries buried under a mound of sugar. Has a candied quality to it, like a raspberry lolly-pop. Again, not a lot going on except pure raspberry acid sweetness.

This one is the only framboise lambic I've tried other than Lindeman's which I enjoyed much more. This is ok, but nothin' special. I would reach for Lindemann's over this.

Found on-tap at Mr. Dunderbak's.

Pours a pink color with a nice fluffy light pink head. Very attractive beer.

Smells like raspberries and sweetness with a little bit of funk thrown in.

The sweetness hits first with a kick of tartness thrown in at the same time. The finish is a bit of pleasant funk.

In the mouth it is sweet and creamy. Carbonation fits well.

Ok, this is just too sweet to drink too much. Not a bad beer and I will order it again, but I'm still unsure I can drink a whole one.

A. Deep, dark pink with fluffy, lacy, retentive head that is a lighter shade of pink.

S. Crushed raspberries. Pure raspberry goodness. Makes you want to jump in the glass and swim around.

T. Fermented raspberries with a touch of lemony zest. Very sweet like Lindemans Framboise, but has a nice tart compliment to balance all the sweetness. Very nice!

M. Light and zingy in the mouth with high carbonation.

D. I could drink this all day-no questions asked.
