Had this on tap one sunny afternnoon at Kelleher's in downtown Peoria after a long walk down the riverfront. Served in a tulip glass, this deep purple brew had a 1/2 finger head of pink foam that stuck around quite a while.

Smells of fresh tart raspberries. Not very complex, but the smell of raspberries is very acurate...very close to sticking your nose in a bowl of freshly picked raspberries.

Tastes like raspberries buried under a mound of sugar. Has a candied quality to it, like a raspberry lolly-pop. Again, not a lot going on except pure raspberry acid sweetness.

This one is the only framboise lambic I've tried other than Lindeman's which I enjoyed much more. This is ok, but nothin' special. I would reach for Lindemann's over this.

Fruit, syrups and balancing acidity set the tone for a taste that's almost un-beerlike. As the complement of raspberry engulfs the ale, its clear intent is to appeal to the sweet tooth, dessert ale seeker, and those only recently learning the Belgian ropes.

Its nearly cartoonish pour releases a deep mauve saturation that's clearly indicative of immense raspberry additions within. The strong scent and early taste of raspberry puree is nearly overwhelming- commanding all that tastebuds and olfactory sense receive.

But after the palate acclimates to the sheer sweetness, other balancing nuances begin to surface. Light apple cider and sparkling white wine give a pleasant acidity to accompany that already established by the berries. Natural fruit and spice character emit with currant, red grape, white pepper and faint herbal bitterness- presumably from its light hop additions.

But its steadfastness in the simple syrup realm limits any turn to dryness as the ale slowly fades in its sweetness and candied body, causing the ale to seem like soft drinks and wine cooler despite those delicate acidities and alcohols. Tangy and moderately tart, all this seems fruit-derived instead of the more coveted ale beneath.

One thing's for sure- it sells its raspberry character well!
