Always excited to see this one return to my local shop. Grabbed a sixer and was on my way. Drank the first 5 over the last week and saved the last one for a proper review.

Poured into a pint glass, and this one pours beautifully. A deep dark black with a bit of light on the edges. Perfect 1-inch mocha head on top that retained perfectly throughout the drink. After each sip, a sticky ring of lace stuck to the glass. I had to take a picture when all was said and done as I've never seen such perfect lace rings on my glass. A rare perfect 5 for this one.

The aroma is of chocolate powder, dry grainy bread, a little alcohol. Sweet dark fruit aroma noted as well. The body is a little hefty, but still slick enough for my liking to sip straight from the can. Not too filling. Chocolate flavors abound, semi-sweet and rich. Dry cardboard like flavor, husk, a tiny bit of ethanol noted as well. Good roasted character on this one. Light char on the finish.

All-in-all, this is a great Porter, and one of the best from a can, no doubt!

Pint can poured into a nonic.

Appearance: Pours a solid black with a one-inch tan head that recedes to film fairly quickly. Lacing is moderate. Carbonation hard to gauge because it's so dark.

Aroma: Coffee and dark, bitter chocolate dominate the nose. Fairly well hopped, too. Some booze is noticeable.

Taste: Follows the nose, and it's pretty terrific. It's a deep, rich, somewhat burnt-tasting porter full of bitter black coffee and chocolate. Pretty excellent porter - not fancy, but an excellent representation of the style.

Mouthfeel: Thick, solid body. Not watery at all. Has the ideal level of richness and fullness for a good porter.

Overall: One of my favorite porters. It's off the seasonal market right now, and I'm hopeful it comes back, because it really hits all the notes for a strong, flavor-packed porter. It has nearly 100 years of history behind it, and deserves a more heralded place in brewing history.

Poured into a standard pub glass.

Pitch black with a very large tan head. Faint chocolate on the nose with sweet malted barley and some floral hops. There’s not much aroma to this one. Taste is sweet up front, of hard candy, licorice, mild coffee and it finishes much drier. The body is very thin for a porter, but the alcohol is decently hidden for 7%. The flavors in this aren’t all that outstanding and I would expect more body and substance for a 7% beer. I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase this.
