Never realized that Narragansett made anything besides their lager and cream ale, but obviously I was mistaken. When I saw this, I knew I had to try it. This is being reviewed from a 16oz can.

A: Pours a very deep, roast color with a thick, 1-in nutty, caramel colored head that leaves a lot of sticky lacing.

S: Aroma consists of roasted malts, creamy chocolate, espresso, and molasses.

T: I get some deep roasted malts in the initial flavor with some plum or other dark fruit like raisin or prune. Through the middle of the taste, I get some espresso, nuts and a surprising dose of hops. This beer finishes with some chocolate notes and a bready, dry finish.

M: Really thick, sticks to the palate quite a bit. Alcohol is not hidden that much but is blended with the flavors well. This is a slow sipper for sure.

O: A surprisingly good porter, very strong character and uses an abundance of hops that you normally wouldn't find in a typical porter. Narragansett is pretty much know for their lager, but this beer proves their versatility in crafting. Big thumbs up for this beer!

Pint can poured into a nonic.

Appearance: Pours a solid black with a one-inch tan head that recedes to film fairly quickly. Lacing is moderate. Carbonation hard to gauge because it's so dark.

Aroma: Coffee and dark, bitter chocolate dominate the nose. Fairly well hopped, too. Some booze is noticeable.

Taste: Follows the nose, and it's pretty terrific. It's a deep, rich, somewhat burnt-tasting porter full of bitter black coffee and chocolate. Pretty excellent porter - not fancy, but an excellent representation of the style.

Mouthfeel: Thick, solid body. Not watery at all. Has the ideal level of richness and fullness for a good porter.

Overall: One of my favorite porters. It's off the seasonal market right now, and I'm hopeful it comes back, because it really hits all the notes for a strong, flavor-packed porter. It has nearly 100 years of history behind it, and deserves a more heralded place in brewing history.

Poured into a standard pub glass.

Pitch black with a very large tan head. Faint chocolate on the nose with sweet malted barley and some floral hops. There’s not much aroma to this one. Taste is sweet up front, of hard candy, licorice, mild coffee and it finishes much drier. The body is very thin for a porter, but the alcohol is decently hidden for 7%. The flavors in this aren’t all that outstanding and I would expect more body and substance for a 7% beer. I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase this.
