Notes/Commercial Description:
‘Gansett Cream is made with quality ingredients like 2-row pale, Munich, Vienna, and Cara-malt for a creamy head! We used Columbus hops for bittering and a touch of Willamette hops for a slight hop aroma. Bright gold in color and brilliant in clarity, this session ale delivers an extra pop of hop bitterness found only in cream ales of the early 1900′s.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #64 (Apr 2012):

LOOK: Shiny gold, big head

SMELL: Clean, crackers, fresh-cooked cereal, herbal hop, mild nose

TASTE: Fresh, crisp, slick, grainy, cooked grain, hop bitterness, leafy, dried grass, hop oil, herbal; dry, grassy finish

A solid go, this shows more character than most versions that are true to this style. Balance and drinkability seem to be the prime directives here, both of which they nailed.

Tallboy poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dense gold with a creamy white head and minimal lacing. Head starts at about two inches and slowly recedes over about ten minutes. Looks more like a lager than an ale. It's definitely thicker in color than a typical American lager though.

Aroma: Bready, biscuity nose with very noticeable malts. The aroma isn't super strong, but it's certainly inviting. No hops really noticeable.

Taste: This is a good, sturdy session beer. I prefer it to their original lager because it's more flavorful. Lots of malty, bready, lager-like flavor - it basically tastes like what I wish macro lagers tasted like. Hops are barely noticeable, which is fine for a beer like this. This is a good all-purpose type beer: pairs well with most blue collar food, good for the bowling alley, yardwork, or the beach, picnic-friendly, etc. We actually got a bunch of these for a backyard party once; it was sort of my subtle way of trying to turn macro-lager folks on to craftier beer. Seemed to work; they were gone by the end.

Mouthfeel. Super smooth. Very enjoyable to drink, with a very easy finish. Sessionable for sure. Also has a good, sturdy body.

Overall: Some of the advertising copy for this beer mentions that it's good for duckpin bowling, so I was bound to like it, as a lifelong duckpinner. That aside, it's really a terrific everyday session beer. Basic enough to appeal to any palate, crafty enough to appeal to the more sophisticated beerman. One of my beers of choice for events where I know I'm going to be hosting large groups, because it's cheap and reliable, too.

Poured into a slightly chilled pint glass. Think foamy head held up nice for a few minutes and the lace on the glass was nice.

This is the lager lovers ale. Very drinkable yet not lacking in flavor. Thought it was hoppy for the style and had a grassy/pine taste. This I find is usual for beers in cans. Aftertaste left a metallic citrus feel on my palate that I didn't mind and found myself having another sip to rid the aftertaste.

This beer is good. Great for someone just getting into craft beers and learning the styles.
