22oz bottle purchased as a single from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" tan head over the somewhat muddy reddish brown brew. Head holds on pretty well, with a muted malty nose.

Taste starts with roasted grains, a touch of fruitiness in the middle, and closes with coffee notes and a moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is good as well. Overall, an interesting beer, but not quite as assembled as I was expecting. Still definitely an enjoyable brew.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on October 23, 2013.

It pours mahogany brown to deep amber with a slight cloudiness and a delicate, soft beige head that fades slowly but laces along the way.

The aroma explodes with chocolate up front and then there is a more subtle character of raisin, black currant, and burnt malts. Hops are not upfront on the nose.

Medium body but also coats my tongue and throat with an odd acidity.

Like the aroma the chocolate malts take over everything for the first second but it does not take long for the hops to assert themselves from the left flank and linger with a moderate bitterness at the end. Very intriguing.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large foamy beige head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, lager yeast, coffee, chocolate and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with bready with a hearty roasted malt character and lager yeast. Then some flavors of coffee and chocolate come in. The hops presence is mild at first but exerts itself more as you continue to drink the beer. It’s also complementary and brings a good balance plus hides the ABV. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, well-disguised kick, decent representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

22 oz bottle poured into a big snifter (two pours).

A - dark brown. White head. Not a lot of retention or lacing.

N - lots of phenols. Woosh. Roasted malt character and also some dark dry fruits.

T - less hoppy than I thought it would be. Good roasted taste. Earthy, nutty, with the dark dry fruits from the nose. Not a lot of alcohol on the mouth compared to the nose.

M - good cola like consistency. Not heavy at all. Almost refreshing.

O - love a ganny! This was a real surprise find in the store and I'm glad I picked it up. Quite good. Watch out for the strength. Cheers!

A: Pours a deep ruby/mahogany color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a thin patch of bubbles

S: Some roasted malts, a light nuttiness, and some dark fruits (cherries and raisins, mostly). Not too much going on

T: Starts off with the roasted malts, some nuttiness, and a mild fruity phenolic note that includes the cherry and raisin notes. Again, not too much but it is more intense than the nose

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Hard to really define this as a schwarzbier, as it's pretty much as labeled: a steam/California common beer with quite a bit of roasted malts. Basically, a hybrid of California common and schwarzbier. That said, rating to style is a bit difficult. A decent brew overall and quite drinkable for the 9% with everything else aside. Worth a try at least
