Served in a snifter glass. Murky dark brown and opaque with a thick inch high head that lingers very long, slowly receding. Aroma of bready malt, floral hops, a bit winey. A boozey taste lingers.

Rich and malty flavor, earthy, full of fig and cabernet, hints of smoke and coffee. Mouthfeel is a bit slick, but slightly warming from the alcohol.

22 oz bottle poured into a big snifter (two pours).

A - dark brown. White head. Not a lot of retention or lacing.

N - lots of phenols. Woosh. Roasted malt character and also some dark dry fruits.

T - less hoppy than I thought it would be. Good roasted taste. Earthy, nutty, with the dark dry fruits from the nose. Not a lot of alcohol on the mouth compared to the nose.

M - good cola like consistency. Not heavy at all. Almost refreshing.

O - love a ganny! This was a real surprise find in the store and I'm glad I picked it up. Quite good. Watch out for the strength. Cheers!

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on October 23, 2013.

It pours mahogany brown to deep amber with a slight cloudiness and a delicate, soft beige head that fades slowly but laces along the way.

The aroma explodes with chocolate up front and then there is a more subtle character of raisin, black currant, and burnt malts. Hops are not upfront on the nose.

Medium body but also coats my tongue and throat with an odd acidity.

Like the aroma the chocolate malts take over everything for the first second but it does not take long for the hops to assert themselves from the left flank and linger with a moderate bitterness at the end. Very intriguing.

Consumed 8/25/13

Appearance: Dark brown from a distance, some light brown around the edges, nice clarity - pours with a creamy, light tan head - fades to a wispy, nearly solid cap, leaves some nice streaks of lacing

Smell: Lager yeast, caramel malts, and a hint of burnt and roast - pale grains, caramel malts, touches of roasted, lightly burnt, vaguely smoky malts - lightly sweet and caramelized, with some dark fruits - some grassy hops, light hints of citrus - some alcohol in the back - mostly mild and clean overall

Taste: Lightly roasted dark fruits and caramel - dark fruit is more apparent in the taste than in the smell, with some raisin and fig - mostly caramel malts, with some pale notes, and some chocolate malts - grassy hops, medium bitterness mostly from the burnt and roasty notes - sweetness from cooked, caramelized malts - lager yeast, very reminiscent of Narragansett Lager and Narragansett Fest - finishes with some sweetness and booze

Mouthfeel: Medium body, somewhat creamy, nicely carbonated, mostly clean finish

Overall: Slightly different than a usual Steam Beer

The name of this beer is a seemingly endless source of amusement for me. At first I thought this was an California Common / Steam Beer... except "Black" and "Imperial." So, a dark barleywine or something? Nope, it's a Schwarzbier. It's not typical for that style, either. It's got some nice caramel, dark fruit, and burnt notes. Not as good as the most recent "Private Stock" release (the Imperial Bohemian Pilsner), but worth a try.

Picked up the last bottle from Liquor depot in simsbury ct.

This stuff is outstanding! An incredible effort and another winning product by Narragansett! I love it and cant recommend it more highly! It's smooth as shit, goes down like its 5%, though it rings in at 9%. It has a wonderful slightly burnt toasty flavor of a true schwartbier and a clean slightly roasted caramel accented finish that lasts and lasts. Awesome!

Thanks guys and gals at Narraganset! Keep it coming!

overall 4.25 out of 5.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large foamy beige head that fades slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, lager yeast, coffee, chocolate and some hops.

T: The taste starts out with bready with a hearty roasted malt character and lager yeast. Then some flavors of coffee and chocolate come in. The hops presence is mild at first but exerts itself more as you continue to drink the beer. It’s also complementary and brings a good balance plus hides the ABV. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, well-disguised kick, decent representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" tan head over the somewhat muddy reddish brown brew. Head holds on pretty well, with a muted malty nose.

Taste starts with roasted grains, a touch of fruitiness in the middle, and closes with coffee notes and a moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth, and drinkability is good as well. Overall, an interesting beer, but not quite as assembled as I was expecting. Still definitely an enjoyable brew.

22oz bottle. Pours a pitch black color with an inch of thick khaki head. Good amount of lacing. Aromas of dark fruits, black licorice, caramel malts and hints of chocolate. The taste is more of the dark fruits, most noticeably raisins. Malty with some caramel and hints of dark chocolate.Coffee notes at the finish. Earthy and boozey. Lots of carbonation. I like how 'Gansett keeps putting out these new brews. Overall, its not the best of their Private Stock series, but its still worth a try. Not bad.

Imperial Black Steam pours a very dark brown into the glass with a medium sized, creamy light tan head on top. The foam fades away quickly leaving only a few spots of lace on the glass.

The aroma is malty and nutty with notes of dark fruit (cherry), chocolate, and medicine. Slightly reminds me of cherry cough syrup.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is soft, creamy with moderate carbonation. The flavor is malty with fruity notes. Dark malt and chocolate blend nicely with dark fruit (cherry, plum) and a little earthy nuttiness. It finishes mild to moderately bitter and earthy with a touch of grass. Once gone the fruity notes and dark malts linger on the palate.

A tasty easy drinking beer with a nice balance and smooth body. The aroma is a little off and the earthy finish doesn't seem to fit in. Overall though a good beer.

Appearance: Dark rich brown with some darker brown/black highlights. Relatively clear with a slight chill haze. Head is pale tan and fluffy bordering on creamy. Drops to a thin clumpy cap with a slightly chunkier collar. Small splotches and spots of lacing.

Smell: Grassy with some sweet caramel malts. A touch of roasted malt. Very mild. Some bready components with a slight push of dark fruit through the back. Some plum skin and dark berry. Carries the distinct smell of Narragansett yeast. Slight hint of alcohol in the back.

Taste: Raisins and grass. So much raisin. Some deep roasted malts coupled with a caramelized malt sweetness. Bready like biscuits and brown bread. Slightly burnt with some serious hay and raisin. Minimal hop presence is mostly earthy. A darker sweeter take on the standard. Caramel malt. Warming builds the earthy/grassy and sweet profile.

Mouthfeel: Light pushing to medium body with a moderate carbonation. Slightly dry with a nice clean finish.

Overall: More than a tugboat.

Take the standard and make it a bit sweeter and roast it. That's the ticket and I'm willing to ride.
