Appearance: Immediately, you’ll notice how perfect the head is. Fine, thick, and persistent; you can literally spoon it out of the glass like whipped cream. Beer color appears to be black, but light reveals very dark brown in the body, with deep ruby highlights around the edges.
Aroma: Aromas here are very gentle, and consist of light, earthy, raw vanilla bean and a touch of chocolate. The chocolate aroma is chalky, like a piece of dark chocolate past its best-by date.
Taste & Mouthfeel: The texture of this beer complements the chocolate and vanilla flavors; it’s smooth, not too thick, and very drinkable. Flavors consist mostly of vanilla bean and light coffee/bitter chocolate. The finish contains the same flavors, with the balance leaning away from the vanilla, and more towards the coffee character of the dark roast malts. It’s simple, but well balanced and not too sweet. This is largely because the vanilla used is actual vanilla bean, which gives a pleasant, earthy quality to the beer, and not a vanilla extract syrup, which presents only the sweet side of vanilla.
Final Word: This is a good go-to beer when you feel like something on the sweeter side, and the nitro version is far superior to the standard Vanilla Porter. I know that technically this should almost always be true, but the difference is much more noticeable here than with some other nitro beers, as the smoother texture is perfectly suited to the vanilla and chocolate flavors. The standout aspect of the Vanilla Porter is the aforementioned use of authentic vanilla bean (from New Guinea and Madagascar), as without it this beer would be too simple and less satisfying. Your brain knows the difference between an extract/syrup and the real thing, so use of the latter makes this seemingly simple beer very satisfying.
