-deep orange-amber bottle pour (22 oz) with a very sticky tan foam head. The aroma is sweet and whiskey dominated. This tastes more like a barley wine than a DIPA (might be the age). The flavor is oak-bourbon above all. It is very boozy (10.5% on the bottle). I have enjoyed this over a couple of hours, but was expecting something a bit different.

Pouring a cellar temp 22 oz bottle into a snifter. The beer pours a bright clear copper with a bit of a blush highlight when I shine light through the beer. A soft fluffy eggshell white head of 3 cm foams up and fades slowly leaving tight lattice and a sturdy island in the center of the glass.
Aroma is lots of toffee malt and some booze with a bit of vanilla and faded weak hints of citrus rind. The nose definitely reveals that this is a big beer.
First sip reveals an average body with fine prickly carbonation and a slightly sticky texture.
Flavor is kind of sweet actually with the caramel and vanilla mixing with bourbon and again some orange citrus hit. There is some booze pepperiness, but not a lot of heat on the finish. I do get some bitter dry resiny hops on the finish. This beer isnt fresh and reminds me more of a slightly hoppy barleywine than a DIPA at this point. My local beer store is selling bombers of these at a severe discount, I may pick up a few more bottles as the hop fading doesnt make this a negative experience for me. Nice beer to drink prior to a blizzard arriving in the AM!

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 5/17/2016. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, caramel, bread, floral, grass, light coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness. A touch of barrel booze appears as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, bourbon barrel, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, caramel, bread, floral, grass, light coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, lemon/orange rind, pine, honey, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, caramel, coconut, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, bourbon barrel, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying sweetness or astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness/oak spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/sticky, fairly resinous, and slightly silky/slick/syrupy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with light warmth lingering after the finish; with slight barrel booziness. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/pine hops, bourbon barrel, and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Thanks Geo.
This one pours a burnished orange hue. Fluffy white foam is assertive, rising 2 fingers & tightly packed. Sticky lacing.
Smell is slightly boozy. Bourbon meets gin. Must be the hops dancing with the barrel aging. A bit of grapefruit and some malt.
Taste is not a shrinking violet. The barrel brings a bit of heat. Citrus and malt are present, but they are playing second fiddle to the barrel. This is drinking more like an American barleywine. Pretty good.
Mouthfeel is solid enough for my liking.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter.
A: Orange pour with good clarity. Fine bubbled off white head retains well and leaves collars of lacing.
S: Hop aromas of grapefruit, orange rind, and earthy leaves. Caramel and toast malt base. Whiffs of tropical esters. Toasty oak and bourbon, but in an old fashioned cocktail sort of way.
T: Candied orange peel and ruby red grapefruit in a big way. Juicy and citrusy. Caramel malt base. Toast. Bourbon and toasty wood bring up the rear and ride just underneath the hopping. Warming alcohol. Orange and bourbon/oak on the finish.
M: Full body. Round and creamy smooth texture. Chewy but not too heavy. Carbonation gently massages the tongue. Warming alcohol.
O: Though I'm often not a fan of the bourbon barred aged IPA concept, I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. Simcoe was a good hop choice, and the dry hopping was done perfectly. It is a little more robust than some other strains and takes charge of the beer, letting the barrel play a supporting role. The orangey/grapefruit notes also integrate with the barrel in such a way that it reminded me a little of one of my favorite cocktails, the old fashioned.

Breckenridge Brewery - 471 IPA (Simcoe). 10.5% ABV. 22oz bomber into snifter.
Look: Settles a dark, hazy copper/orange in the glass, retaining a two finger sized white bubbly head, which ends up as white bubbly lacing.
Smell: I could smell the whiskey as I poured it. Strong notes of whiskey, along with oak barrel , bitter hops, ripened fruit, and caramel malts.
Feel: Very light bodied, with nice amount of carbonation while being very smooth.
Taste: Definite whiskey and oak barrel up front, followed by the presence of ripened fruit, and sweet caramel malts. Leaves a minor boozy taste after warming up.
Overall: Didn't expect to see this, after it apparently came and went from my area. This is a pretty big beer, and the first barrel aged IPA I've had (I think), so I wasn't sure what I was walking into. Long story short, it is different in a good way; it retains the fruitiness and bitterness, while having strong whiskey and oak notes.

22 oz. Bomber
ABV: 10.5%
Pours a very nice slightly cloudy dark golden orange color, very nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger plus off-white head, which leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, some maltyness, citrusy, big whiskey note. The taste is pretty nice hoppy, malty, very nice whiskey note, some citrus. Medium body, ABV hidden pretty well. Overall, this one surprised me, pretty tasty brew. Maybe a little overkill on the whiskey though.
