22oz bottle purchased in July 2007 at Lukas Liquors in St. Louis. Poured and consumed in October 2007.
Color is a nice tangerine orange, maybe some hints of brown. But there's a murkiness that takes away from what would otherwise be a great pleasure. Tannish white head dissipates quickly, but the lacing sticks around the edge of the glass forever.
Aroma well-balanced, certainly a lot of bitter hops with certainly a lot of sweet malt. Taste is a little muted (maybe a function of the age?), an echo of citrus-y American hops rather than an edgy explosion. Not syrupy like way too many DIPAs, but also not as clean as I would like. Doesn't quite beg for another drink, so it's not worth the tradeoff for the high alcohol.
Like a very good homebrew. Doesn't do anything wrong, but doesn't stand out on the good side, either. I would love to visit the brewery and see what else they have, but this is in the middle of the pack for me for the DIPA style.
