12oz brown bottle with no freshness dating. Served in a snifter.
Pours a deep, dark, orange tinted, medium copper color with a small white head and marginal carbonation. Appears plenty dense with an above average clarity. The head is mostly diminishing and leaves spotty lace. Smell is citrus hops, sweet malts, and a slightly burning alcohol. The flavor is much like the smell in that it starts with a heavy sweet maltiness, followed immediately by a sharp grapefruit rind bitterness, and finishes with a noticeable phenolic alcohol. The citric aftertaste lingers. Mouthfeel is full bodied with a syrupy texture and lively carbonation. Finish is chalky with a heavy alcoholic feel.
Overall, I feel this beer is lacking the balance of ingredients that the top notch examples of the style achieve. Although the style is designed to feature the hops and higher alcohol content, in my opinion, this beer doesn't do enough to mask the harshness of that higher alcohol. That being said, I am happy to see this or any brewery attempt this style, and I am glad that I gave it a try. But considering the alternatives, I doubt that I will buy this one again.

A: not much head, nice lacing though. Dark amber in color
S: maybe I'm a bit congested or something but I don't get much on the aroma.
T: very good. This is an interesting beer because the initial taste is boozy with raisin flavored like a Belgian double or something but then you get that hit of citrusy hops which finish with an intense and excellent bitterness. Good.
M: nice. Light and then bitter finish is very pleasant
O: this is a solid beer...interesting because of the booziness while still maintains hoppy character

The pour was a nice typical high IBU orange hue. The head lasted but only a few seconds.
But there was no question about hops here. Lots of different hops all coming out at once.
Once I got past the aroma, my first sip verified what my nose was saying. It was a nice dry bitterness, grapefruit, pine tar and citrus spices. But then, what else? that was it, there wasnt anything else. I wanted some malt to balance the bitterness, but with this beer, I just got bitterness without any roundness .
Even though this was a mid range IBU (70), the taste presented itself as being higher, but without a lot of the typical high IBU styles.
So, I walked away from this one with mixed emotions.
