Arriving as a gift in a 22 oz. brown bomber, the beer poured out pale golden amber with a generous three finger foamy head. Aroma was typical of an American IPA with pine, grapefruit, and grass notes imparted by the hops, and malt sweetness I was not anticipating. Tasted like it smelled, and Id have been surprised if it didnt. The taste exhibited a harmonious interplay between the grapefruit citric notes and the snappy spicy bitterness of the hop varieties. Sweetness of the malt was there in a sufficient strength the keep the hops from getting too out of hand. Mouthfeel was somewhat gritty and sticky for an IPA, and the aftertaste supplied a lingering dry bitterness. Alcohol seemed a bit too present and warming for an IPA, until I looked up the strength. And I was surprised to see a 9.2% up there. At that strength it is at the upper end of the DIPA scale, and for that style this is quite a subtle alcohol presence. This was, much easier to drink than most DIPAs. Didnt quite match the ease of gulping down of a regular American IPA, but it came too close to be a very dangerous beer.

A: not much head, nice lacing though. Dark amber in color
S: maybe I'm a bit congested or something but I don't get much on the aroma.
T: very good. This is an interesting beer because the initial taste is boozy with raisin flavored like a Belgian double or something but then you get that hit of citrusy hops which finish with an intense and excellent bitterness. Good.
M: nice. Light and then bitter finish is very pleasant
O: this is a solid beer...interesting because of the booziness while still maintains hoppy character

The pour was a nice typical high IBU orange hue. The head lasted but only a few seconds.
But there was no question about hops here. Lots of different hops all coming out at once.
Once I got past the aroma, my first sip verified what my nose was saying. It was a nice dry bitterness, grapefruit, pine tar and citrus spices. But then, what else? that was it, there wasnt anything else. I wanted some malt to balance the bitterness, but with this beer, I just got bitterness without any roundness .
Even though this was a mid range IBU (70), the taste presented itself as being higher, but without a lot of the typical high IBU styles.
So, I walked away from this one with mixed emotions.
