This beer is thick, a heavily opaque medium-dark orange. It forms a creamy pillow of yellow-tinted head on top that sustains itself very well for the long term and drops thick and heavy spotting down the glass.
The aroma's good and it has some heft, just not DIPA heft. It's lacking a bit of strength, but it's not much, and it develops some as it warms. It's clear that hops are the foremost concern, and what I get on the nose is pretty much what the tongue tells me with more detail and clarity.
What my tongue tells me is that this beer is deliciously hoppy. Lots of resinous pine and juicy pineapple are even through the entire session. Grapefruit pith and zest make up part of that aspect, but it's tamed by the balance from malts, caramel and toffee, and the juicy pineapple. A touch of biscuit comes out later with more orange zest and some gentle spiciness while pine stays strong.
Crisp, smooth, and well carbonated, the medium body strays toward heavier territory but keeps it bright and clean.

On draft
A: not much head, nice lacing though. Dark amber in color
S: maybe I'm a bit congested or something but I don't get much on the aroma.
T: very good. This is an interesting beer because the initial taste is boozy with raisin flavored like a Belgian double or something but then you get that hit of citrusy hops which finish with an intense and excellent bitterness. Good.
M: nice. Light and then bitter finish is very pleasant
O: this is a solid beer...interesting because of the booziness while still maintains hoppy character

S: Aroma of grapefruit, fruity with a bit of spice and a trace of malt sweetness in the background..

T: Taste of grapefruit, mild malt sweetness, some fruit and bit of nut. Nice bitterness and a dry finish.

F: Medium body, well balanced with a flavorful character.

O: Enjoyable beer. good sipper to relax with.

A dark golden-amber with a very thin head on top (sat at the bar a while before being served, perhaps?).

Smells a bit overly-hopped (floral, citrus) relative to the minor malt notes.

Taste follows aroma: too hoppy. The lacking malt results in a flimsy backbone and a very bitter beer, bordering unenjoyable.

Too small of a body to carry the hops. Despite the thin head, decently carbonated.

Another american double that is unbalanced. Pass this one up.

Deep amber with reddish tints. Solidly capped with an inch of whipped ecru foam. Hazy, too.

Floral hops, black pepper, and grapefruit pith aromas. Slight pine. Dry malts with a toast. Not that much maltiness evident yet.

Holy hop bitterness. Mouth-tingling and bleach bright. This time, all about the pine. A woody character is here, along with more astringent floral notes. Peppery again, but more gum-peeling in the spiciness caused by the booze. A straight mouth-zapper.

Drinks thicker, yet curdling with exuberant carb. Too much of it. Hard to swish and not easy to swallow. Booziness is up there, too.

Somewhat one-note. Far from elegant. Still a hop dream, if you need to brush your teeth with the stuff. Don't knock it 'til you try it.

I try this beer from time to time, finally got a chance to have it on draft last night. The bottles high price always put me off from it since I never liked it much. The draft was malty sweet and there was an imbalance with the hops - I just don't feel they matched flavors well. Carbonation was Ok, did not taste the 9.2%ABV, it was hiding under the metalliac tang and the musty smell I got from it. The hops chosen did not please me either, the aroma was just bitter and "basement dusty mold".

Well, won't try it again for at least a year.

On tap in Denver.

A: Clear copper, a little haze to it. Nice foamy head that lasts a while.

S: Malt stands out over the hops. Usually I prefer my IIPAs the other way around.

T: Malt forward beer. But still a decent imperial. Alcohol isn't noticeable at all.

M: Creamy. Nice carbonation.

O: Pretty good stuff. At $3 a snifter during happy hour, I'll be back to get this again.

Enjoyed on tap at Breckenridge Brewery in Denver, free with the tour (great tour, I might add). I should also note that this beer is considerably better on tap than out of the bottle - dunno if it's just the freshness or what, but yum.

A: Hazy copper with thin off-white head. Poor retention and not much lacing.

S: Tough since the head was so disappointing. Primarily citrus with some floral notes; fresh bready and caramel malts. Weak; perhaps just necessitating a harder pour.

T: Great. Subtle citrus up front grows throughout the swallow, giving way to floral notes with a hint of pine. Caramel and bready malts are present, but sweetness certainly takes a backseat to the hop character. Ends with a subtle, lingering bitterness.

M: Crisp and clean with a medium body. I generally like something a little more resinous, but 471 is filtered with diatomaceous earth and the likes. Nonetheless, easy drinking and enjoyable.

O: A very solid DIPA. Not the best in the area, but not far off, either.

I like Breckenridge, but wasn't sure what to expect.

Pours out a nice orange/yellow that's pretty clear with a nice 2 finger white head.

The aroma is floral with notes of citrus and hops.

The taste is also very fruity, with mango, grapefruit and orange notes along with hints of floral qualities. The malt had a presence, but was mainly in the background. It had a nice bitter and crisp after taste.

Definitely one of my new favorite IPAs around. Very hoppy and delicious.

Pours a clear deep golden light copper color with a solid one finger cream head that lingers, leaving sheets of lacing.

Aroma is dominated by grapefruit and pine, resin, and a somewhat sweet caramel malt backbone.

The initial sip reveals a significant amount of dms. Canned corn dominates the aftertaste. Getting beyond that, the flavor begins with sweet caramel malt, toffee, ushering in sharp citrus notes of grapefruit, lemon, and orange. The finish is fairly bitter, accompanying pine, spruce, and resin.

Body is moderate to slightly heavy, smooth, with a moderate amount of carbonation and a noticeable alcohol warmth.

Beyond its flaws, the beer is an interesting balance in extremes. Sweet caramel malt shows early and is then overpowered by a significant hop punch that fires on all cylinders...resin, bitterness, citrus, pine.

Breckenridge : 471 IPA

An IPA of sizable strength and fair price. Pours a light golden color with chill haze but otherwise good clarity. Sticky bubbly lace is left behind. Aroma of citrus-y floral hops and mild biscuity/bready malt notes as well.

In the flavor, a fairly easy drinking and mellow profile. Upfront, mild grapefruit, sticky hop resins, and solid bitterness. The malt body has a sugary/honeyed character, and some clean alcoholic esters are there as well. Pretty well balanced, though in the finish 471 leans on the sweet side. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and somewhat smooth. Overall, a pretty solid effort from Breckenridge.

Appearance is a light copper with a thin layer of head that dissipated quickly. The nose is of fresh pine needles. The malt and hop flavors are in good balance here but this offering really lacks the bitter hop punch that I expect to find in a solid DIPA.

Had this on Tap at 13north Grill in Phoenix. Beer selection consisted of bud-light, miller, dos equies, etc.. and something named 471 which none of the waiters knew anything about

Easily the best beer I've had from Breckenridge, a big bold IPA. Reminds me of a homebrew IPA with massive hop bill.
I love the cloudy look, tells me someone put some love in the beer.
The smell is right on, fresh hops, not old or crisp, but fresh, a floral character to the hop smell
The mouthfeel and taste are fantastic, a big malty sweet hoppy meal, nothing light or re-freshing here. This beer is a meal in itself.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much of anything out of this beer, but its easily one of my favorites now.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is orange to amber colored with a thick head. Great retention and ample lacing complete an outstanding appearance. The aroma offers a balance of hops and caramel malts. The flavor offers a subtle touch of earthy flavor to go along with a somewhat hop forward beer. Malt is in there as well, but plays a secondary role. A bit sweet, with alcohol hidden fairly well considering the 9.2% abv. Overall, a decent brew. Worth a try.

Had on-tap at Blake St. Breckenridge.

Poured a hazy golden copper color with a sizeable head. Lacing was considerable. Had an aroma of earthy funk and citrus. Definitely hoppy. Tasted full of earthy/citrus-y hops. I did not get much malt flavor from it. Well balanced and clean...very drinkable for a 2xIPA.

Light brew that goes down smooth with light carbonation. I actually enjoyed this one which is rare for me when drinking a 2xIPA. I would try it again.

a really solid double ipa. poured into a chilled pint at the breck taproom downtown denver. yellowish golden amber color with a bright white head. smell big bold hops and taste is true. resin heavy hops in the palate and a bittersweet finish that is memorable. mouthfeel is perfect for this beer, the lighter side of medium with a certain "i want another" vibe. at over 9 percent though, you'd better have a sober driver. if not for the oatmeal stout, this would be breckenridge's best offering.

From my notes:

Pours clear, foamy, with a big citrusy bouquet. I get some pine notes, some resin on the finish. Lots of effervescence from the draught, wondering if it’s overcarbonated? Surprisingly light for a DIPA, but definitely a strong one at 9.2%.

A: poured a clear golden orange into an American shaker with a finger of fluffy off white head that leaves beautiful lacing.

S: piney and citrusy hops dominate. Heavy orange and lemon notes.

T: big orange flavors wallop the tongue and resiny hops bitter the sweet orange. Some good sweet malts flashing around with this otherwise hop dominated beer. It leaves a pine flavor on the tongue.

MF: a bit heavy and syrupy, good effervescence and warm but not overly so.

O: this is a really good dipa for the citrus lovers in the crowd. Its very drinkable and I could see myself putting down a growler of this while watching a movie with the GF then nut being able to walk straight to go to bed.

Served on tap at Finnegan's in Plainfield, IL. Pours a coppery orange with a two fingered white head that drops after about the first sip. Nice lacing.

Aromas of citrusy hops, caramel malts, grapefruit, hint of alcohol hiding in the background.

Flavors of citrusy hop punch, grapefruit, caramel malt, some alcohol heat later in the finish. Some orange and pineapple.

Mouthfeel is mouthcoating bitterness with a light tug at the back of the teeth. Medium bodied. Good level of carbonation.

Overall a decent middle of the road DIPA. Not much to distinguish it from others of its kind, but it is an easy drinking, deceptively drinkable beer.

Draft to snifter. Good. Not bad, not great; just good. Good color, good flavor, good mouthfeel. Smell is too subtle for its type. Otherwise, it's a good beer to drink. It just faces some stiff competition these days in the world of double IPAs, and it doesn't set itself apart...

A - Hazy amber copper with a whipped white head. Excellent retention. Solid hills of lacing on the glass.

S - Lemon zest and pine, doughy caramel, stone fruit, grapefruit comes out as it warms.

T - Pine mixed with lemon. Sweet caramel malt holds up well against the herbal evergreen hops. White peaches. Finishes crisp and bitter. Grapefruit and shows up in the aftertaste.

M - Full and creamy, heavy carbonation.

Full hop flavor as well as good bitterness. Hops dominate the malt. Very tasty. The best so far from the brewery.

Poured on tap into a tumbler. Breckenridge 471 gives a very cloudy brown/gold body with nice off white and creamy looking head. Decent lacing as well.

Bouqeut though is pretty ordinary, with just a standard hop smell kind of muted. Not much else to say here nothing else really going on.

The taste is the same primarily of hops with alchohol feel and bitterness. Sugar finish of grapefruit and mild citrus only on the aftertaste, they really didn't seem to mask the alcohol taste on this very well and it almost gives off a pine sourness.

This is ok but I would certainly drink something else instead of it.

Had this one on tap at the brewery location at 471 Kalamath in Denver. Poured a dark golden color, with a rocky little white head. Aromas of freshly plucked pine needles and freshly peeled citrus. Light to medium bodied, with flavors of citrusy hops, caramel and bready malts. Not a great beer, but works well with the great BBQ.
