Poured from a bottle into a Sierra Nevada pint glass. The color is an opaque orange-ish. I say quite opaque because I read other reviews that called it transparent and clear. I wanted to make a clear distinction (no pun intended) that mine is not. (Not a good or bad judgement, btw) The head is foamy, off-white, but settled almost immediately to a nice skim and left a nice lacing.
The smell is on the citrus side from the hops, more grapefruit than say a sweeter orange or tangerine. About halfway down I pick up a pine scent that smells more like it tastes. I'm not getting much from the malts as the hops are really overpowering.
The taste is almost aggressively bitter. Only 68 IBUs? It seems much more bitter than that to me. The taste is somewhat resinous and pine-y, which contrasts the citrus aroma. What citrus I get is grapefruit. The malts make themselves known, however, It's a bread-y presence that is welcome.
The mouth feel is substantial. More than medium for an IPA. Dense and filling with good carbonation.
Lucky U IPA tastes more like an Imperial IPA than a regular IPA. It reminds me of Maharajah (which I didn't like). It's hard to give this a bad rating as everything seems like a purposeful and well made IPA. I personally, would rather have a number of IPAs before this, but that is just my personal tastes. I think a lot of IPA lovers would really like this. I'm thinking of a friend who just can't get anything bitter enough. I taste too much grapefruit for my preference.
