I've been circling this beer for awhile, then decided to pull the trigger. Glad I did. Pours an on style golden bronze with minimal head. As I sipped it down, the flavor profile of sweet bread malt and light grassy, herbal hops lingered nicely. The balance of malt and hop is perfect as the sweetness isn't overdone like some made in the Fatherland can get.
Love these American craft pilsners! Nice job Breckenridge...

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear straw color, maybe leaning slightly towards golden. The head is a finger high and white in shade. Its texture is just creamy enough, and its retention is pretty solid. Also, a consistent ring of lacing is left on the glass. Well, it certainly looks regal... (4.5)

Smell: I really notice the pilsner-y malt backbone first and foremost. There is a lot of grain, sweet bread, and sugar cookie on the nose. Touches of Saaz hops come through to break up the monotony. Mmmmmm, love Saaz. Could use more of its grassy, floral goodness, but ah well. This actually smells pretty solid, especially considering I don't like needlessly big pilsners for some reason. (3.5)

Taste: I'm immediately reminded why I don't like imperial pilsners - the hops, malts, and general 'bigness' of the brew don't mesh in any way. Individually, the notes are pretty solid: a decent sweetness opens it up (notes of sugar cookie, honey, and ginger come through), giving way to a finish loaded with floral, grassy Saaz hops. This just seems horribly imbalanced for some reason, with the first few sips coming off almost like a harsh cleaner. Then something funny happens - the more I drink, the more I enjoy it. It ends up being a pretty okay brew, actually. (3)

Mouthfeel: While it feels big and semi-sweet, it does have a crisp bite which gives it some drinkability. In addition, this is quite mouth-filling, thanks to its airy carbonation. Could be cleaner, though. (3)

Overall: At first, I didn't like this one bit. But my perseverance paid off: the remaining 2/3rds of the brew are fairly decent. I'm of the belief that pilsners shouldn't be imperialized; considering that (and considering Breckenridge hasn't made anything that's impressed me) it could have been FAR worse. (3)

3.18/5: Not regal, but not a peasant either

An emboldened lager taste with full flavor, Breckenridge's imperial pilsner is big in flavor and bold in body but without loosing what it is that make well-made lagers so grand. The brewers make it seem effortless.

And as the modestly hazed golden lager pours, its obvious that the beer's natural flavors are intact and not removed by over filtering. And those flavors pour on the palate with moderate honey sweetness, drizzled over wafer-thin cracker and whole grain. Delicately floral, the nose is enticed by a bouquet of honeysuckle.

Over the middle, the beer's estery character opens up with lemons and apples. Shortly after, a spiciness slices through the sweetness and gives wallop of hop spice. Its peppery taste is grassy, herbal and tangy- like verbena and lemongrass.

Its malty-dry finish carries a modest warmth, but its the tale of those spicy hop bitternesses that carry the late palate into a crisp and refreshing closure. Shying away from the rougher alcohols or maltier weight, the dry finish still remembers its base lager flavor. Rather than imperial pilsner, I prefer to see this lager as a firm Oktoberfest with the soul of structure of German lager.

Appearance - clouded orange/straw color. Watery thin head holds a thin cover somehow. Thin but sticky coating of lace.

Aroma - slightly floral/soapy outta the bottle, settles to a rather plain graininess.

Taste - big pop of sweet grain and Saaz. An alcohol zing around mid-palate and on the exhale. Tasty pilsner tang on the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - moderately crisp, nicely smooth.

Overall - a little big for sessioning but a very tasty double pils.
