12oz sample bottle.

LOOK: Clear chestnut, frothing puts on a show.

SMELL: Booze, heat, wood, overripe fruit, toasted bread, citric rind.

TASTE: Roasted grain, pulling wood, hint of mother juice, salted caramel, dried plums, dried grass.

Wow, so happy I ran into this treat. Bold but not a palate killer. Great balance from the barrel aging to the size of the beer which can be easily lost ... not here. Too drinkable for its size.

Poured into a tulip

A-- Poured a dark brown cola color and settled a brownish black color. Half finger of white head that went to a decent collar on the sides of the glass. Just touches of spotty lacing.

S-- Burnt toffee, orange peel, salted cashews, oak, and whiskey. Good nose and well balanced with the base beer and the barrel treatment.

T-- English malts really make this stand out. Lots of orange and toffee flavors. Touches of nutmeg. Hops have pretty well faded out and much more like a wee heavy at this point.

M-- A bit on the heavy side. Got a bit over it at the end of sharing this. Maybe needed a bit more carbonation or I should have drank this sooner.

O-- Really well balanced BA beer. Like that it was also a style that works with a touch of a BA treatment. Still got the base beer and still got what the beer was about.

Supposedly an anniversary brew for the brewery, this is the double ESB aged in Stranahan's Whiskey barrels. Had this one on tap tonight. Poured a dark amber color, with a nice little white head. Nice subtle Whiskey aromas, lead to a medium to full bodied beer, with more Colorado whiskey, some sweetness, some caramel and a bitter hop finish.

According to the rep I talked to, this is the brewery's 471 ESB aged ten months in fermentors then put in Stranahan whiskey barrels for another five. Mine was poured from the tap into a tasting glass during the 2011 AZ Strong Beer Fest.

Cherry-tinged coffee in color, mostly dark but clear in lighter spots. Fizzy one-finger head of very light khaki becomes thin ring and bit of film, leaving jagged horizontal streaks of lace.

Aroma: whiskey, caramel, butter, bread pudding. The backbone of ESB is a bit overwhelmed by whiskey, but its good whiskey.

Taste: ooh. Much better integration of booze here. Whiskey amidst buttery caramel, some nuttiness, earthy English hops, and interesting dry finish.

Creamy, smooth medium body. Light, peppery carbonation. The alcohol is rather violent, burning the throat and nose along with my tongue.

I appreciate the smooth integration of booze here. The whiskey is a compliment, rather than an overpowering taste usurper. The best I've had from Breckenridge.

Double ESB aged on Stranahan barrels, but they call it a Wee Heavy. Nice looking beer. Lacy tan head over a woody brown. Nose has bready malts, nuts, caramel, oak, whiskey and vanilla. Most of the hops have faded. The English malts really stand out as do the Stranahan barrels. Well balanced though, not a whiskey bomb. Medium to full body is well carbonated.

On-tap at Flying Saucer during their 11th anniversary served in a tulip glass a nice crisp brown with a thin diminishing light tan head. Aroma is oak, burnt caramel and a hint of rye and slight alcohol. The taste is a nicely complex blend of caramel, vanilla, oak, rye, and mild pine hops. The beer is medium bodied with mild alcohol presence. This is certainly an enjoyable barrel aged beer, one I would love to have again.

On tap at the Rackhouse Pub. I don't usually like whiskey or bourbon barrel beers but i figured why not get the tick? Served in a small globe glass, not quite a snifter. Dark brown color, almost no head. The tap handle was labeled as "twenty barrel aged extra special bitter". The smell is heavy whiskey and vanilla but still nice and I'm no fan of whiskey. The flavor is dominated by the whiskey barrel but in a good way, lots of vanilla, wood, fruit, cake, sugar.
