Located on the 6th floor of the Macy's store off Union Square. Beware the elevator is the slowest and most annoying I have ever been in. But once you make it to the 6th floor, the space is modern, comfortable, and nicely bright from the large windows overlooking Union Square.
The bar are is small and has about 8-10 stools. There are a number of hitops off the bar and this is where we sat. A dining area is in the back, but I did not venture there to check it out. There were about 10 taps with a decent amount of easy to get local west coast beers. I settled on a Deschutes Black Butte Porter to accompany my angus burger with several toppings from the large selection. The burger was very good but expensive. The fries were exceptional. Beers were about $7 pint.
This place offers some quality beers but is not as adventurous as the Las Vegas location which I have visited several times before. Service was good despite the large crowd during my visit. Defintely worth a trip if you want a gourmet hamburger and a local beer.

Well the location is purely a tourists spot; right on Union Square. And the prices very much fit that as well. The burgers were way too overpriced. The prices are definitely prohibitive. Beer selection was good enough I suppose, considering this is a tourists trap. Service was very "rockstar"-esqe; as in you have people who are going to sell it on up and they're displaying a bit too much energy for my tastes.
The bottom line is that in a city that is a culinary destination, there are certainly significantly greater options worth your time - and money! There isn't anything heavily interesting on the beer selection; at least not considering the city and region. I'd never go back.

Hard to be fair to this place as it's right in the tourist/shopping district of Downtown San Fran. Ended up here because I couldn't get into Cheesecake Factory. Yeah, I know, pretty lame, but I'd just gotten off of a 7 hour commute, and I needed food and beer. Didn't have the lay of the land yet. But it seved both needs adequately. Had a kobe burger, a Pyramid IPA and a DeScheuts Black Butte. Paid way too much for the food, but the beer prices were average. Certainly better than Cheesecake Factory.

The Burger Bar in Las Vegas is one of my favorite places in that city and I was anxious to try the one in San Francisco on my recent trip there. It's not as good as the one in Vegas but definitely worth the visit.
It's on the top floor of the Macy's building in Union Square and there is a wall of windows overlooking the square. Very pretty. The beer selection is good but not nearly as good as the Vegas bar, featuring a lot of local selections as well as the favorites. (no Russian River, unfortunately).
The bartenders were not as knowledgable as I had hoped but were very friendly.
I didn't eat there but they do have a selection of over the top hot burgers featuring some of the hottest sauces in the world (think man vs. food). You have to sign a waiver before eating one.

When I came to the Burger Bar, I intended to wait a million years to see what Hubert Keller deems worthy as being a hamburger, and to have my pocketbook completely raped.
The chef knows his stuff, and even my veggie burger was delicious, yes... and the burger did set me back about 14 dollars... What I hadn't anticipated was the beer selection or the view. The latter is probably a huge oversight on my part because the restaurant is on the 6th floor of Macys department store overlooking Union Square, and this should have been obvious before arriving, but didn't hit me until I was seated at a window. The former was not something I had heard of prior to coming. Literally, there is one WHOLE menu page for tap beers, many of them being California beers, and many being from Nor Cal. The backside of the drinks menu lists more bottled beers (of good quality, and origin).
The only downside was the temperature. My Eel River Porter was far too cold to appreciate it's bouquet. I won't knock this place yet, though, because it was only the first week, and I'm sure they are still working out the kinks.
I will definitely return once the crowds have died down and all of the taps are going strong.
