Style | ABV
American Amber / Red Ale |  5.40% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This is what happens when an American Amber meets a German Dunkel. Aromatic and Munich malts yield a slight sweetness balanced with a hint of chocolate roast. The result is a very approachable beer with a smooth distinctive taste.

Pours a clear dark amber with a medium short lived beige head. Aroma and taste is of dark malts and caramel flavors, yeast, mild fruity notes and hops bitterness on the end for balance. A medium body with moderate carbonation. The finish is sweet dark caramel malt, some grains, yeast and mild bitterness with a bit of a nutty ending. Overall good drinking brew.

This pours a semi-cloudy amber color with a foamy beige head. The aroma is mostly malty with not much else that my nose could pick out. The flavor is rather simple with an average taste of grains and malt. There is a lingering grassy grain after taste.

Poured into my Warsteiner mug. Pours a clear, light brown with a finger length tan head that dissipates quickly. Smell brings forth some big caramel and toffee notes, and there is some noticeable grass in the background. I find there to be some vanilla as well, but it isn't strong. Taste is much less bold than the nose, but there is more of a hop presence. The sweet, toasty malts are still the story to this one, and it's a good story. There is a lingering toasty caramel aftertaste, but I don't get the roasty chocolate that the brewery advertises it has. I do understand what they are saying when they say this is a very approachable beer, because it is a lighter bodied beer, but not watery, and it has decent balance to it.

Overall: This isn't the greatest Amber Ale I've had, or the best beer I've had by Big Muddy. With that said, this is a very reasonably priced beer and a very sessionable beer. You don't have to run to the store right now to get a sixer, but you should consider picking one up the next time you see it.
