Nice Ipa, very balanced between hops and grassy grapefruit flavor, comes in 160z cans which is perfect to take out anywhere.

A brewery opened minutes away from my alma mater Southern Illinois University mere months after I graduated, such sweet sorrow. I've had a few beers from Big Muddy all pretty good none too overwhelming including this one, a very good run of the mill IPA very subtle for 7.5, I had a couple IPAs before this one so maybe my palate is hop scorched but it tastes very light and thin, a nice bitter after glow but very little mouth feel and not a good head a little lacing a very melancholy gold color. Great to see Southern Illinois on the map but could be better.

Acquired in Tennessee in a mixed sixpack on my July trip to the South. Can't get this Illinois product in Mass.

No visible canning date. Attractive green and gold can design.

Poured from the 16 oz. can into a Tree House Tulip pint.

a: Clear amber with a finger thick offwhite head which receded to uneven surface foam and dense lacing.

s; Moderate floral and resin.

t: Floral and pine hops up front over a medium biscuit malt base. Bitterness lingers on the tongue. Slightly musty aftertaste becomes grassy later.

m: Medium with very good body and smooth, chewy texture, good carbonation tingle and some alcohol throat burn as well.

o; Definitely an above average IPA for flavor and mouthfeel. Would buy this again if it was available in my area. But that is highly unlikely.

A: The beer is hazy amber yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly died down, leaving delicate lacing covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of gooseberries and tropical fruits are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has lots of fruity flavors from the Galaxy hops—gooseberries and mangoes seem to stand out in particular—along with some hints of citrus from the Cascade hops. A light amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. No crispness is perceptible.
O: This beer exhibits a lot of interesting aromas and flavors from the Galaxy hops. The low amount of bitterness makes this beer very easy to drink, but the mouthfeel lacks crispness.

DATE REVIEWED: July 31, 2014... GLASSWARE: Duvel oversized tulip... OCCASION: a week with the air conditioning off continues...APPEARANCE: dark, forceful amber orange body, thick and hazy; effervescence is deliberate, sparse; head is creamy, thick, almost oozing with Swiss cheese-like caverns forming along the glass; fantastic lacing--a near one-finger head holds throughout drinking... AROMA: beautiful bouquet of fresh floral hops with some fruit traces; big caramel malt presence--strikes a surprising balance for an IPA with a 7.5 ABV and with pine cone wafting all about... PALATE: medium-to-full bodied, swift to the throat yet sitting against the tongue and cheek in its aftertaste; the weakest aspect of the beer? ... TASTE: caramel eases the hop bomb that rears its piney head; orange, mango and some other tropical fruit is suggested in the profile; finishes sharply with a somewhat astringent pucker--yet, overall, this beer delivers a tremendous balance for a beer that too often is a bitter battle.. OVERALL: at $4.99, probably worth a bomber's price; Big Muddy may be the brewery, but this one's pretty clear in its taste--though, as the bottle drains, the beer becomes more subdued and easier drinking--is ita trap to drink another?!...
