The recently opened Hy-vee is set to give Woodmans East a run for its money and will also be saving me some trips to Steve's and Riley's. So far, I am impressed. Selection includes at least a beer or two from just about every brewery available in the Madison market, save a few very small Wisconsin craft breweries and some of the more rare imports. The layout is great with most beer nicely stored in coolers. A large walk in to the back of the store houses some bombers and nice Belgian 750s. Staff is very enthusiastic and eager to help and for now, their prices are the best in Madison. I imagine they are artificially low right now to capture market share since they are new but I am happy to take advantage of them while they last. I highly recommend Hy-vee to any Eastsiders and its reasonably close proximity to Hwy 94 (either the 151 or 30 exits) will make it a fine destination for folks traveling through looking for WI beers.
Update: Prices are now on par with other Madison retailers.

The only store I stopped at to buy beer. My beer search was limited as I was looking for only a few specific beers, but their selection is large. Typical supermarket liquor store atmosphere. You come here to pick up beer and get out, not to hang around talking beer. Most of the beer is refrigerated. One particular beer I was looking for was not on the shelf so I enquired about it. They found the beer at the bottom of a pallet full of beer. They went to work out and dug out one 6-pack for me. Nice. The workers were able to answer my questions about the beer.
I typically shop at independently owned stores, but this time it was convenient and had everything I needed.

I stopped in here over the weekend with my wife. I was shocked to see what a great beer selection they had. There was an entire wall probably 20 yards or so of 6 and 12 packs of craft beer. Lots of stuff from Wisconsin but also a good selection from the rest of the country.
They also have a big walk in cooler filled with cases of macro brews. On the front of the cooler is a lot of international beers as well as a couple doors of bombers. Didn't check out much in the liquor and wine parts but the store was expansive.
There was a representative there from Capital Brewery handing out samples so we talked with him for a bit. There was also a cooler filled with ice and single beers. Most stuff was either terrible (BL chelada) or stuff that was close to being past it's prime (I picked up a bunch of different octoberfest beers that I hadn't tried).
All in all a good store though and I'll definitely be returning here in the future.

I meet a friend here on a recent trip to Madison. He had actually gone in to ask for directions to my hotel and found some good stuff. I was able to pick up Bell's Oracle and Founders Nemesis. Good thing because I didn't see either one the rest of my trip. The selection was average compared to the other stores I visited on my trip. Service was good and curtious. I will visit here again when in town. They had all the standard Wisconsin beers I was looking for plus O'so Night Train. Prices were affordable.

I was surprised this place had releases like Oracle and Nemesis. While it does't have the broad selection of other places, what they do have is pretty solid. For staff of a store its type, I was impressed by the knowledge of the people there about beer. This place would be great in other places of the state, but the competition in Madison amongst beer stores is brutal. I would go here often if it were near me, but with the alternatives down there I don't know when I will go there again. On a side note, it isn't too far from Ale Asylum, so it does have that going for it.
