EDIT - JUNE 2011: draught selection has expanded to 13 micro beers (Denison's, Crazy Canuck, Galt Knife) and bottles remain at 15 craft offerings (Black Oak among them). Currently the 2nd best beer bar in the city, next to Gambrinus Bistro & Cafe.
EDIT - SEPT. 2010: new taps include Black Oak Chocolate Cherry Stout, Grand River Highballer Pumpkin, Nickel Brook Maple Porter, and Wellington Silver Wheat Ale. Black Oak Nutcracker Porter, Nut Brown Ale, and Pale Ale, Grand River Galt Knife Lager and Plowman's Ale, and Wellington Arkell have joined the bottle list. Railway City Double Dead Elephant (an Imperial IPA) will be tapped in the near future.
Far from being a place to 'settle' for, this bar is now one of the top beer spots in the city, with an impressive mix of bottles and taps and a beer-infused food menu. Worth checking out if you're looking for an alternative to Gambrinus, Morrissey House, and Chaucer's Pub.
One of the few remaining gastro pubs in London after the closing of the Alex P. Keaton. The Black Shire is a better-than-average bar with friendly service, a decent beer selection, and convenient operating hours. Perhaps the best place to grab a LATE pint in the city, as it stays open until 2 am every night, including Sundays.
Vibe is young/liberal/hipster, with many of the punk rockers, artists, students, and beer enthusiasts who used to frequent the APK. Service is very competent as the servers are quick and gracious. On a recent trip, my girl and I enjoyed a chat with bartender Sallie McFarlane. Food is solid North American pub grub - burgers, fondue, hot wings - and you don't have to wait long for drinks.
Selection I would say is better than The Church Key, Ale House, and UWO Grad Club. Rotating taps have included Nickel Brook Strawberry White, Barking Squirrel Lager, some Railway City offerings, and Stratford Common. Bottles are McAuslan Apricot Wheat, Cameron's Cream Ale, St. Ambroise Pale Ale, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, and Fuller's Vintage Ale. The selection is devoutly mid-range: there's usually 1-3 rare taps, and some easily accessible but solid bottles, so the quality is respectable. Prices are fair as you can expect to pay $5.50 for a pint and $6 for a glass of wine.
Overall, when there's no other place that's open, I don't mind settling for The Shire.

Recently taken over by new owners, this place has a new life. Haven't had the food, so I won't comment there obviously. The place has a large patio which is usually fairly busy. Inside, it is typical pub decor with a homey feel to it. Pub quiz night is a solid night to go on to get to know the owners and regulars. I find it better to go to the bar to order your drinks, as table service can be a bit lacking. Taps total 12, with 7 micros, including Railway Cith, STratford, Creemore, Steamwhistle, and the bottle selection is limited but has included many micros. I'll return for the harder to get Ontario micros they seem to always get. Worth checking out.
